To determine whether the venom of Apis mellifera can exert a radioprotective effect, by reducing the frequency of chromosome aberrations induced by radiation, five different experiments were performed on bone marrow cells of Wistar rats.Animals weighing about 100 g were injected intraperitoneally with different venom concentrations (1.0 or 0.5 mul) 1 or 24 h before, or 30 min after being submitted to 3 or 4 Gy of gamma radiation, and sacrificed 24 h after the last treatment. For each experiment in addition to the group of animals submitted to combined treatment (venom + radiation) and to their control, there was also one group treated with radiation only and another treated with venom only. A decrease in the frequency of chromosome aberrations, and fragments in particular, as well as in the number of cells with aberrations was observed in the experiments in which venom was administered 24 h before irradiation, and the effect was more marked at the higher venom concentration (1 mul/100 g weight).

The exchange of gluons between heavy quarks produced in e+e- interactions results in an enhancement of their production near threshold. We study QCD threshold effects in gammagamma collisions. The results are relevant to heavy quark production by beamstrahlung and laser backscattering in future linear collider experiments. Detailed predictions for top-, bottom-, and charm-quark production are presented.

Neutron dosimetry using natural uranium and thorium thin films makes possible that mineral dating by the fission-track method can be accomplished, even when poor thermalized neutron facilities are employed. In this case, the contributions of the fissions of (235)U, (238)U and (232)Th induced by thermal, epithermal and fast neutrons to the population of tracks produced during irradiation are quantified through the combined use of natural uranium and thorium films. If the Th/U ratio of the sample is known, only one irradiation (where the sample and the films of uranium and thorium are present) is necessary to perform the dating. However, if that ratio is unknown, it can be determined through another irradiation where the mineral to be dated and both films are placed inside a cadmium box.Problems related with film manufacturing and calibration are discussed. Special attention is given to the utilization of thin films having very low uranium content. The problems faced suggest that it may be better to substitute these films by uranium doped standard glasses calibrated with thicker uranium films (thickness greater than 1.5 x 10(13) mu m).

We study the production of three gauge bosons (W(+)W(-)Z(0) and W(+)W(-)gamma) at the next generation of linear e(+)e(-) colliders operating in the yy mode. We analyze the total cross sections as well as several kinematical distributions of the final state particles. We find out that a linear e(+)e(-) machine operating in the rr mode will produce 5-10 times more three-gauge-boson states compared to the standard e(+)e(-) mode at high energies.

Co-doped alumina powders were synthesized by means of the polymeric precursor method to obtain ceramic pigments. The effect of different contents of Co2+ on phase transition gamma to alpha-Al2O3 and appearing of CoAl2O4 spinel were studied by means of X-ray diffraction. A partial phase diagram of the system CoAl2O3 was proposed from these data by means of determination of the percentages of these phases according to the calcining temperature. Critical particle size to phase transition was determined by means of calculations of crystallite size and determination of superficial area through the BET method. UV-vis spectroscopy of the samples allow to compare the band shift with the phase transition. Besides, a study of thermal stability and intensity of the blue coloration of the synthesized powders with the presence of cobalt in relation to the calcining temperature was accomplished and compared to the phase transition. The results show that the higher blue color intensity was obtained for the powders with Co-doped gamma-Al2O3 closest of phase transition to alpha-Al2O3 + CoAl2O4. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. Venom of the honey bee Apis mellifera induced a protective effect against the induction of dicentric chromosomes by gamma radiation (2.0 Gy) in human peripheral blood lymphocytes which the cultures were treated with 0.00015 mul venom/1 ml medium 6 h before irradiation. In cultures to which the venom was added immediately before irradiation with 0.25, 1.0 and 2.0 Gy, no significant differences in number of dicentric chromosomes induced was observed when compared to cultures submitted to irradiation only. The venom did not induce clastogenic effects nor did it increase the frequency of sister chromatid exchanges.

Minidosimeters of L-alanine and 2-methylalanine (2MA) were prepared and tested as potential candidates for small radiation field dosimetry. To quantify the free radicals created by radiation a K-Band (24 GHz) EPR spectrometer was used. X-rays provided by a 6 MV clinical linear accelerator were used to irradiate the minidosimeters in the dose range of 0.5-30 Gy. The dose-response curves for both radiation sensitive materials displayed a good linear behavior in the dose range indicated with 2MA being more radiation sensitive than L-alanine. Moreover, 2MA showed a smaller LLD (lower limit detection) value. The proposed system minidosimeter/K-Band spectrometer was able to detect 10 Gy EPR spectra with good signal-to-noise ratio (S/N). The overall uncertainty indicates that this system shows a good performance for the detection of dose values of 20 Gy and above, which are dose values typically used in radiosurgery treatments. The influence of temperature upon the effects of crotoxin (CTX)? from Crotalus durissus terrificus venom, and gamma-irradiated (Co-60, 2000 Gy) crotoxin (iCTX) was studied in rat neuromuscular transmission 'in vitro'. Indirect twitches were evoked in the phrenic-diaphragm preparation by supramaximal strength pulses with a duration of 0.5 ms and frequency of 0.5 Hz. The phospholipase A(2) (PLA(2)) enzymatic activity of CTX and iCTX was assayed against phosphadityl choline in Triton X-100. At 27 degrees C, CTX (14 mu g/ml) did not affect the amplitude of indirectly evoked twitches. However, at 37 degrees C, CTX induced a time-dependent blockade of the neuromuscular transmission that started at 90 min and was completed within 240 min, iCTX (14 mu g/ml) was inneffective on the neuromuscular transmission either at 27 or 37 degrees C. The PLA(2) enzymatic activity of CTX at 37 degrees C was 84 and that at 27 degrees C was 27 mu mol fatty acid released/min/mg protein, and that of the iCTX at 37 degrees C was 39 mu mol fatty acid released/min/mg protein. Thus, it was concluded that the mechanism of detoxification of CTX by gamma radiation at the neuromuscular level relies on the loss of its PLA(2) enzymatic activity. 2000 Elsevier B.V. Ireland Ltd. We study lepton pair production in heavy-ion collisions with emphasis on nonstandard contributions to the QED subprocess gamma-gamma --> l+l-. The existence of compositeness of fermions and/or bosons can be tested in this reaction up to the TeV mass scale. We show that for some processes the capabilities of relativistic heavy-ion colliders to disclose new physics surpass the possibilities of e+e- or ppBAR machines. In particular, spin-zero composite particles which couple predominantly to two photons, predicted in composite models, can be studied in a broad range of masses.

We investigate the capability of an egamma collider to unravel the hadronic content of the photon. The experimental problem for probing the gluonic structure of the photon is that small-x triggers overwhelmingly select soft photons rather than soft gluons in hard photons. We show that the problem can be finessed in experiments where laser back-scattering is used to prepare a source of very hard photons. We illustrate their power for studying the parton distributions of the photon and, specifically, for separating the quark and gluon components in events where dijets, jet-gamma pairs, and heavy quark pairs are produced.
