É descrita a invenção de um medidor facial para realização de diagnósticos ortodónticos e para planejamento de cirurgias ortognáticas que compreende um equipamento não radiográfico para diagnóstico do padrão esquelético crânio-facial, a fim de analisar a discrepância no desenvolvimento do crescimento do complexo maxilo-mandibular nos sentidos ántero-posterior e vertical.

PURPOSE: To report a case of idiopathic macular hole, with vitreoretinal traction confirmed by optical coherence tomography that was successfully treated by a single intravitreous perfluoropropane (C3F8) gas bubble injection.METHODS: Case report. A 65-year-old patient with idiopathic macular hole (stage 2, one eye) received an intravitreous gas injection and was prospectively followed with optical coherence tomography.RESULTS: A complete posterior vitreous detachment was achieved within 6 weeks after gas injection. Visual acuity improved from 20/80 to 20/25 by 10 months of followup. Optical coherence tomography disclosed vitreoretinal traction release and macular hole closure. No complications were related to the procedure.CONCLUSION: This simple procedure can assist a complete posterior vitreous detachment with relief of the hyaloid-foveolar traction, facilitating macular hole closure. In this work a study about the mechanical properties of the API 5L X70 steel, with or without heat treating, has been made, with the intetion of assess the influence of cooling after the austenitization heat treating by air cooling (normalizing) and a rapid cooling with oil (tempering). This steel is known by high strength and ductility values and it is commonly used in the manufacture of oil pipes. The growing energy demand encouraged the study and manufacture of this material. Although this microalloyed dispense subsequent heat treatings, it was proven that its implementation is very advantageous for this type of application, improving hardness and plastic stability. It was also assessed that the faster the cooling rate is, the better will be these properties

Patients with Class II division 2 malocclusion and mandibular retrusion have limited treatment options after the growth peak, such as surgical-orthodontic treatment or mandibular advancement devices. Among bite-jumping devices, the Herbst appliance allows greater increase of mandibular growth since it does not require patient compliance and allows continuous use. This case report presents the treatment of a Class II division 2 malocclusion in a patient after growth peak, performed in two stages. The first stage included the upper incisors proclination and overjet increase with multibracket appliance to benefit next stage. The second stage involved mandibular advancement using Herbst appliance aiming to correct the Class II molar relationship. The treatment resulted in a stable occlusion with periodontal health, normal functions and facial aesthetics improvement. Dental and skeletal changes arising from treatment could be assessed by cephalometric analysis and superimposition of pretreatment and post-treatment cephalometric tracings. Antero-posterior discrepancy was corrected by means of dental movement as well as by mandibular growth increment stimulated by the Herbst appliance.

As mordidas cruzadas anteriores e posteriores podem ser tratadas desde as dentaduras decídua e mista. Embora a literatura descreva diversas técnicas para a correção individualizada desses problemas, o tratamento de pacientes com as duas alterações é pouco documentado. O presente artigo relata o tratamento desses problemas com o expansor tipo Haas associado a molas digitais. Essa alternativa apresenta boa previsibilidade, fácil confecção e instalação, e ótima eficiência.

The rehabilitation of edentulous areas with osseointegrated dental implants is a well-documented, predictable procedure in the literature, with high success rates. However, the lack of bone at the recipient bed or proximity to anatomic structures limits the rehabilitation procedure especially at the posterior mandible. Thus, short implants are an alternative treatment for such cases of severe bone resorption. The purpose of this study was to review the success rate of short implants, especially those based in the posterior mandible and to show a clinical case. A literature review was made on electronic databases PubMed and Bireme with articles published between the years 2005 to 2012, using the keywords "short dental implants". It was concluded that the success rates of short implants are similar to those presented by conventional implants but still related to their geometry and surface treatment. Also, short implants can be considered as a viable alternative for the rehabilitation of severely resorbed jaws. However, many authors consider that more research is necessary when a short implant is compared to a long dental implant.

Short implants are increasingly used, but there is doubt about their performance being similar to that of regular implants. The aim of this study was to compare the mechanical stability of short implants vs. regular implants placed in the edentulous posterior mandible. Twenty-three patients received a total of 48 short implants (5 × 5.5 mm and 5 × 7 mm) and 42 regular implants (4 × 10 mm and 4 × 11.5 mm) in the posterior mandible. Patients who received short implants had <10 mm of bone height measured from the bone crest to the outer wall of the mandibular canal. Resonance frequency analysis (RFA) was performed at time intervals T0 (immediately after implant placement), T1 (after 15 days), T2 (after 30 days), T3 (after 60 days), and T4 (after 90 days). The survival rate after 90 days was 87.5% for the short implants and 100% for regular implants (P < 0.05). There was no significant difference between the implants in time intervals T1, T2, T3, and T4. In T0, the RFA values of 5 × 5.5 implants were higher than values of 5 × 7 and 4 × 11.5 implants (P < 0.05). A total of six short implants that were placed in four patients were lost (three of 5 × 5.5 mm and three of 5 × 7 mm). Three lost implants started with high ISQ values, which progressively decreased. The other three lost implants started with a slightly lower ISQ value, which rose and then began to fall. Survival rate of short implants after 90 days was lower than that of regular implants. However, short implants may be considered a reasonable alternative for rehabilitation of severely resorbed mandibles with reduced height, to avoid performing bone reconstruction before implant placement. Patients need to be aware of the reduced survival rate compared with regular implants before implant placement to avoid disappointments.
