The electrochemical corrosion and passivation of Al-5Zn-1.7Mg-0.23Cu-0.053Nb alloys, submitted to different heat treatments (cold-rolled, annealed, quenched and aged, and quenched in two steps and aged), in sulphate-containing chloride solutions, has been studied by means of cyclic polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The cyclic polarization curves showed that sulphate addition to the chloride solution produced a poor reproducible shift of the breakdown potential to more positive potentials. The repassivation potentials, much more reproducible, and practically separating the passive from the pitting potential region, were slightly displaced in the negative direction with that addition. When the alloys were potentiodynamically polarized in the passive potential region, sulphate was incorporated in the oxide film, thus precluding chloride ingress. In addition, Zn depletion was favoured, whereas Mg losses were avoided. Different equivalent circuits corresponding to different alloys and potentials in the passive and pitting regions were employed to account for the electrochemical processes taking place in each condition. This work shows that sulphate makes these alloys more sensitive to corrosion, increasing the fracture properties of the surface layer and favouring the pitting attack over greater areas than chloride alone. In the present work the corrosion resistance of micro-cracked hard chromium and Cr3C2-NiCr (HVOF) coatings applied on a steel substrate have been compared using open-circuit potential (E-OC) measurements, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and polarization curves. The coatings surfaces and cross-section were characterized before and after corrosion tests using optical microscopy (OM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). After 18 h of immersion, the open-circuit potential values were around -0.50 and -0.25V/(Ag vertical bar AgCl vertical bar KClsat) for hard chromium and Cr3C2- NiCr, respectively. The surface analysis done after 12 h of immersion showed iron on the hard chromium surface inside/near surface cracks, while iron was not detected on the Cr3C2-NiCr surface even after 18 h. For longer immersion time hard chromium was more degraded than thermal sprayed coating. For hard chromium coating a total resistance values between 50 and 80 k Omega cm(2) were measured and two well-defined time constants were observed, without significant change with the immersion time. For Cr3C2-NiCr coating the total impedance diminished from around 750 to 25 k Omega cm(2) as the immersion time increased from 17 up to 132 h and two overlapped time constants were also observed. Polarization curves recorded after 18 h of immersion showed a lower current and higher corrosion potential for Cr3C2-NiCr coating than other samples studied. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. Electrochemical investigation on the as-cast Ti-Mo alloys (4-20 Mo wt.%) applied as biomaterials in Na2SO4 and Ringer physiological solutions is reported. Analyses of the open-circuit potential indicated that all alloys present spontaneous passivation. SEM and cyclic voltammograms obtained in the Ringer solution showed that the samples studied do not present pitting corrosion at potentials up to 8 V (SCE), indicating high corrosion resistance. Open-circuit potential profiles of the anodic oxides growth in both solutions show that the presence of chloride ions during the anodization does not influence the oxides' chemical stability, and also clearly indicate that adding Mo to pure Ti improves the stability of the anodic oxides. All these results suggest Ti-Mo alloys promissory to be applied as biomaterials. (c) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Cr3C2-NiCr and WC-Ni coatings are widely used for wear applications at high and room temperature, respectively. Due to the high corrosion resistance of NiCr binder, Cr3C2-NiCr coatings are also used in corrosive environments. The application of WC-Ni coatings in corrosive media is 14 not recommended due to the poor corrosion resistance of the (pure Ni) metallic matrix. It is well known that the addition of Cr to the metallic binder improves the corrosion properties. Erosion-corrosion performance of thermal spray coatings is widely influenced by ceramic phase composition, the size of ceramic particles and also the composition of the metallic binder. In the present work, two types of HVOF thermal spray coatings (Cr3C2-NiCr and WC-Ni) obtained with different spray conditions were studied and compared with conventional micro-cracked hard chromium coatings. Both as-sprayed and polished samples were tested under two erosion-corrosion conditions with different erosivity. Tungsten carbide coatings showed better performance under the most erosive condition, while chromium carbide coatings were superior under less erosive conditions. Some of the tungsten carbide coatings and hard chromium showed similar erosion-corrosion behaviour under more and less erosive conditions. The erosion-corrosion and electrochemical results showed that surface polishing improved the erosion-corrosion properties of the thermally sprayed coatings. The corrosion behaviour of the different coatings has been compared using Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) and polarization curves. Total material loss due to erosion-corrosion was determined by weight loss measurements. An estimation of the corrosion contribution to the total weight loss was also given. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. The eutectoid transformation may be defined as a solid-state diffusion-controlled decomposition process of a high-temperature phase into a two-phase lamellar aggregate behind a migrating boundary on cooling below the eutectoid temperature. In substitutional solid solutions, the eutectoid reaction involves diffusion of the solute atoms either through the matrix or along the boundaries or ledges. The effect of Ag on the non-isothermal kinetics of the reverse eutectoid reaction in the Cu-9 mass%Al, Cu-10 mass%Al, and Cu-11 mass%Al alloys were studied using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The activation energy for this reaction was obtained using the Kissinger and Ozawa methods. The results indicated that Ag additions to Cu-Al alloys interfere on the reverse eutectoid reaction, increasing the activation energy values for the Cu-9 mass%Al and Cu-10 mass%Al alloys and decreasing these values for the Cu-11 mass%Al alloy for additions up to 6 mass%Ag. The changes in the activation energy were attributed to changes in the reaction solute and in Ag solubility due to the increase in Al content.
