A pressed pellet of CIO (-)(4) poly (3-methylthiophene) (P3MT) was heated for two hours at 85 degrees C and suddenly dropped in liquid nitrogen. A change was observed around 220 K in the Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) spectra when the sample was slowly cooled from room temperature. ESR line asymmetry parameter (A/B) showed two spatially separated phases. One was identified as a small metallic-like phase. The other phase, the larger one, makes a transition to a semiconducting Charge-Density Wave (CDW) state.

The main properties of realistic models for manganites are studied using analytic mean-field approximations and computational numerical methods, focusing on the two-orbital model with electrons interacting through Jahn-Teller (JT) phonons and/or Coulombic repulsions. Analyzing the model including both interactions by the combination of the mean-field approximation and the exact diagonalization method, it is argued that the spin-charge-orbital structure in the insulating phase of the purely JT-phononic model with a large Hund couphng J(H) is not qualitatively changed by the inclusion of the Coulomb interactions. As an important application of the present mean-held approximation, the CE-type antiferromagnetic state, the charge-stacked structure along the z axis, and (3x(2) - r(2))/(3y(2) - r(2))-type orbital ordering are successfully reproduced based on the JT-phononic model with large JH for the half-doped manganite, in agreement with recent Monte Carlo simulation results. Topological arguments and the relevance of the Heisenberg exchange among localized t(2g) spins explains why the inclusion of the nearest-neighbor Coulomb interaction does not destroy the charge stacking structure. It is also verified that the phase-separation tendency is observed both in purely JT-phononic (large JH) and purely Coulombic models in the vicinity of the hole undoped region, as long as realistic hopping matrices are used. This highlights the qualitative similarities of both approaches and the relevance of mixed-phase tendencies in the context of manganites. In addition, the rich and complex phase diagram of the two-orbital Coulombic model in one dimension is presented. Our results provide robust evidence that Coulombic and JT-phononic approaches to manganites are not qualitatively different ways to carry out theoretical calculations, but they share a variety of common features.

Calcium binding and charge distribution on highly branched and linear sulfated L-galactans from ascidians have been studied using a metallochromic indicator and conductimetric titrations. The distance between charged groups of the linear and highly branched galactans does not vary despite their marked differences in sulfate/total sugar molar ratios. These results indicate that the sulfated L-galactose units are concentrated in the central polysaccharide core and not intercalated among non-sulfated units. This inference is consistent with the chemical studies of these galactans. Surprisingly, calcium affinity increases with increasing amounts of non-sulfated sugar branches in the molecule. Thus, calcium binding in these polymers is not a simple function of availability of anion binding sites but a more complex calcium-polysaccharide interaction. (C) 1998 Elsevier B.V. Ltd. The deconvolution of the voltammograms of polypyrrole electrochemistry has proved to be possible through the electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance data using the F(dm/dQ) function. This deconvolution allows the evolution of the thickness of the polypyrrole films during their redox processes to be estimated and therefore, the mechanical contraction/decontraction of this polymer as a function of the ionic exchange processes can be evaluated. We present the zero-temperature phase diagram of the one-dimensional t(2g)-orbital Hubbard model, obtained using the density-matrix renormalization group and Lanczos techniques. Emphasis is given to the case of the electron density n=5 corresponding to five electrons per site, while several other cases for electron densities between n=3 and 6 are also studied. At n=5, our results indicate a first-order transition between a paramagnetic (PM) insulator phase, with power-law slowly decaying correlations, and a fully polarized ferromagnetic (FM) state by tuning the Hund's coupling. The results also suggest a transition from the n=5 PM insulator phase to a metallic regime by changing the electron density, either via hole or electron doping. The behavior of the spin, charge, and orbital correlation functions in the FM and PM states are also described in the text and discussed. The robustness of these two states against varying parameters suggests that they may be of relevance in quasi-one-dimensional Co-oxide materials, or even in higher dimensional cobaltite systems as well.

We discuss the interplay between electronic correlations and an underlying superlattice structure in determining the period of charge density waves (CDW's), by considering a one-dimensional Hubbard model with a repeated (nonrandom) pattern of repulsive (U > 0) and free (U=0) sites. Density matrix renormalization group diagonalization of finite systems (up to 120 sites) is used to calculate the charge-density correlation function and structure factor in the ground state. The modulation period can still be predicted through effective Fermi wave vectors k(F)(*) and densities, and we have found that it is much more sensitive to electron (or hole) doping, both because of the narrow range of densities needed to go from q(*)=0 to pi, but also due to sharp 2k(F)(*)-4k(F)(*) transitions; these features render CDW's more versatile for actual applications in heterostructures than in homogeneous systems.

The complex analysis of dielectric/capacitance is a very useful approach to separate different polarization contributions existing in polycrystalline ceramics. In this letter, the authors use this type of spectroscopic analysis to separate the bulk's dielectric dipolar relaxation contributions from the polarization contribution due to space charge in the grain boundaries of a CaCu3Ti4O12/CaTiO3 polycrystalline composite system. The bulk dielectric dipolar relaxation was attributed to the self-intertwined domain structures from the CaCu3Ti4O12 phase coupled to the dipole relaxation from the CaTiO3 phase, while the space charge relaxation was attributed to the Schottky-type potential barrier responsible for the highly non-Ohmic properties observed in this composite polycrystalline system.

The use of an effective surface charge density has allowed the Gouy-Chapman (CC) theory to explain surface potential isotherms of Langmuir monolayers of dioctadecyldimethylammonium bromide (DODAB). The effective surface charge density of DODAB monolayer increases with the electronegativity of the counterions in the subphase. The pressure-area isotherms indicate a very condensed monolayer for DODAB spread on an I--containing subphase, which exhibits the lowest surface charge density, whereas the monolayer on a F-containing subphase is extremely expanded owing to the high surface charge density or electrostatic repulsion between headgroups. We study the transport properties of the charge-density-wave system Fe3O2BO3. ac conductivity measurements for different frequencies are presented for temperatures above and below the structural transition. dc conductivity, as a function of temperature and pressure, yields the variation of the transition temperature with external pressure. Below this transition the conductivity is thermally activated in a wide range of temperature and the gap obtained is strongly pressure dependent. The ac conductivity at sufficiently low temperatures below the transition is ascribed to the excitation of local defects associated with domain walls and which are characteristic of the one-dimensional nature of the Fe3O2BO3 system.

The electron-diffraction pattern for two slits with magnetic flux confined to an inaccessible region between them is calculated. The Aharonov-Bohm effect gives a diffraction pattern that is asymmetric but has a symmetric envelope. In general, both the expected displacement and the kinetic momentum of the electron are nonzero as a consequence of the asymmetry. Nevertheless, Ehrenfests theorems and the conservation of momentum are satisfied. © 1992 The American Physical Society.

We discuss the consistency of the traditional vector meson dominance (VMD) model for photons coupling to matter, with the vanishing of vector meson-meson and meson-photon mixing self-energies at q2 = 0. This vanishing of vector mixing has been demonstrated in the context of rho-omega mixing for a large class of effective theories. As a further constraint on such models, we here apply them to a study of photon-meson mixing and VMD. As an example we compare the predicted momentum dependence of one such model with a momentum-dependent version of VMD discussed by Sakurai in the 1960's. We find that it produces a result which is consistent with the traditional VMD phenomenology. We conclude that comparison with VMD phenomenology can provide a useful constraint on such models.

We study a one-dimensional extended Peierls-Hubbard model coupled to intracell and intercell phonons for a half-filled band. The calculations are made using the Hartree-Fock and adiabatic approximations for arbitrary temperature. In addition to static spin, charge, and bond density waves, we predict intermediate phases that lack inversion symmetry, and phase transitions that reduce symmetry on increasing temperature.

In this letter we apply an alternative approach, recently developed, to the description of massless particles of arbitrary spin to the case of spin-two particles. This provides a non-geometrical approach to the theory of linearized gravitation. Within this method the chiral components of a spinor field are treated as independent field variables. The free field Lagrangian is built up from the requirement of chiral invariance. This formulation is parallel to the neutrino theory and leads to a formulation that generalizes, to particles of spin-two, the two-component neutrino theory. At the free field level the analog of curvature tensor, spin connection tensor, and metric tensor are independent quantities. By introducing left-right asymmetric linear interactions of these chiral components we get the linearized gravitation theory.
