Ca0.95Sm0.05TiO3 (CT:Sm) powder was prepared by the polymeric precursor method (PPM). Order-disorder at short and long range has been investigated by means of Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and photoluminescence emission (PL) experimental techniques. The broad PL band and the Sm emission spectrum measured at room temperature indicate the increase of structural order with annealing temperature. The measured PL emission reveals that the PL intensity changes with the degree of disorder in the CT: Sm. The electronic structures were performed by the ab initio periodic method in the DFT level with the hybrid nonlocal B3LYP approximation. Theoretical results are analyzed in terms of DOS, charge densities, and Mulliken charges. Localized levels into the band gap of the CT: Sm material favor the creation of the electron-hole pair, supporting the observed room-temperature PL phenomenon.

Irreversible photoexpansion and photobleaching effect has been observed in amorphous Ga10Ge25S65 glass when its surface was exposed to light with energy greater than the band gap, 3.52 eV. The magnitude of the expansion of GaGeS glasses depends on the exposure conditions. Extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy and Rutherford backscattering spectrometry (RBS) have been used to identify the chemical nature of the glass samples before and after illumination. The quantitative analysis of the EXAFS data leads to a two-shell model of 0.5 oxygen atoms at 2.01 Angstrom and 3.6 sulfur atoms at a 2.20 Angstrom. RBS technique demonstrated that chemical composition of the glass surface after irradiation is oxygen rich. The existence of Ge-O bonds in the glass after illumination was also confirmed by infrared measurements. (C) 2002 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

Investigations of photo-induced structural transformations (PST) and related changes of optical parameters in the light-sensitive amorphous chalcogenides were extended to composite layers, which consist of a wide band-gap material and an active material, Se60Te40 with a smaller band gap. Photo-stimulated interdiffusion and/or crystallization in layered Se0.6Tc0.4/As0.6Se0.94 and Se0.6Te0.4/SiOx were investigated with respect to their dependence on the compositional modulation of the multilayer at scale-dimensions (similar to3-10nm). It was established that PST due to the interdiffusion and crystallization can be efficiently operated by the composition of the adjacent layers of the multilayer which results in the change of the transformation rate and of the optical relief type (positive or negative). The comparison with a single Se0.6Te0.4 layer and with the known data for amorphous-Se/As2S3 multilayers supports the advantages of composite layers for amplitude-phase optical recording. Thin films of barium and strontium titanate (BST), synthesized by the polymeric precursor solution and spin coated on [Pt (140nm)/Ti (10 nM)/SiO2(1000 nm)/Si] substrates were found to be photoluminescent at room temperature when heat treated below 973 K, i.e. before their crystallization. First principles quantum mechanical techniques, based on density functional theory (DFT) were employed to study the electronic structure of two periodic models: one is standing for the crystalline BST thin film and the other one for the structurally disordered thin film. The aim is to compare the photoluminescence (PL) spectra of the crystalline and disordered thin films with their UV-vis spectra and with their computed electronic structures. The calculations show that new localized states are created inside the band gap of the crystalline model, as predicted by the UV-vis spectra. The study of the charge repartition in the structure before and after deformation of the periodic model shows that a charge gradient appears among the titanate clusters. This charge gradient, together with the new localized levels, gives favorable conditions for the trapping of holes and electrons in the structure, and thus to a radiative recombination process. Our models are not only consistent with the experimental data, they also allow to explain the relations between structural disorder and photoluminescence at room temperature. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. Aluminum doped zinc oxide polycrystalline thin films (AZO) were prepared by sol-gel dip-coating process. The sol was prepared from an ethanolic solution of zinc acetate using lithium hydroxide or succinic acid as hydrolytic catalyst. The quantity of aluminum in the sol was varied from 1 to 10 mol%. The structural characteristics studied by X-ray diffractometry were complemented by resistivity measurements and UV-Vis-NIR spectroscopy. The films are transparent from the near ultraviolet to the near infrared, presenting an absorption cut-off at almost 290 nm, irrespective of the nature of the catalyst and doping level. The best conductors were obtained for the AZO films containing 3 mol% of aluminum, prepared under acidic and basic catalysis and sintered at 450 degreesC. Their optical band-gap of 4.4 eV calculated from the absorption cut-off is larger than the values for band-gap widening predicted by the standard model for polar semiconductors. These polycrystalline films are textured with preferential orientation of grains along the wurtzite c-axis or the (100) direction. (C) 2003 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Nanocrystalline SnO2 quantum dots were synthesized at room temperature by hydrolysis reaction of SnCl2. The addition of tetrabutyl ammonium hydroxide and the use of hydrothermal treatment enabled one to obtain tin dioxide colloidal suspensions with mean particle radii ranging from 1.5 to 4.3 nm. The photoluminescent properties of the suspensions were studied. The particle size distribution was estimated by transmission electron microscopy. Assuming that the maximum intensity photon energy of the photoluminescence spectra is related to the band gap energy of the system, the size dependence of the band gap energies of the quantum-confined SnO2 particles was studied. This dependence was observed to agree very well with the weak confinement regime predicted by the effective mass model. This might be an indication that photoluminescence occurs as a result of a free exciton decay process. (C) 2004 American Institute of Physics.

Structural and electronic properties of the bulk and relaxed surfaces (TiO2 and PbO terminated) of cubic PbTiO3 are investigated by means of periodic quantum-mechanical calculations based on density functional theory. It is observed that the difference in surface energies is small and relaxations effects are most prominent for Ti and Ph surface atoms. The electronic structure shows a splitting of the lowest conduction bands for the TiO2 terminated surface and of the highest valence bands for the PbO terminated slab. The calculated indirect band gap is: 3.18, 2.99 and 3.03 eV for bulk, TiO2 and PbO terminations, respectively. The electron density maps show that the Ti-O bond has a partial covalent character, whereas the Pb-O bonds present a very low covalency. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The refractive index and the temperature coefficient of the optical path length change of tellurite (80TeO(2):20Li(2)O) and chalcogenide glasses (72.5Ga(2)S(3):27.5La(2)O(3)) were determined as a function of temperature (up to 150 degrees C) and wavelength (in the range between 454 and 632.8 nm). The tellurite glass exhibits the usual refractive index dispersion in the wavelength range analyzed, while anomalous refractive index dispersion was observed for the chalcogenide glass between 454 and 530 nm. The dispersion parameters were determined by means of the single-effective oscillator model. In addition, a strong dependence of the temperature coefficient of the optical path length on the photon energy and temperature was found for the chalcogenide glass. The latter was correlated to the shift of the optical band gap (or electronic edge) with temperature, which was interpreted by the electron-phonon interaction model. Stoichiometric CaWO4 and SrWO4 thin films were synthesized using a chemical solution processing, the so-called polymeric precursor method. In this soft chemical method, soluble precursors such as strontium carbonate, calcium carbonate and tungstic acid, as starting materials, were mixed in an aqueous solution. The thin films were deposited on glass substrates by means of the spinning technique. The surface morphology and crystal structure of the thin films were investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Nucleation stages and surface morphology evolution of the thin films on glass substrates were studied by atomic force microscopy. The films nucleate at 300 degreesC, after the coalescence of small nuclei into larger grains yielding a homogeneous dense surface. XRD characterization of these films showed that the CaWO4 and SrWO4 phases crystallize at 400 degreesC from an inorganic amorphous phase. No intermediate crystalline phase was identified. The optical properties were also studied. It was found that CaWO4 and SrWO4 thin films have an optical band gap, E-gap=5.27 and 5.78 eV, respectively, of a direct transition nature. The excellent microstructural quality and chemical homogeneity confirmed that this soft solution processing provides an inexpensive and environmentally friendly route for the preparation of CaWO4 and SrWO4 thin films. Amorphous LiNbO3 thin films processed by polymeric precursor method exhibited efficient luminescence at room temperature. The films were deposited on silicon substrates and treated at 200degreesC for different times. The photoluminescence emission yield decreases with the increase of the treatment time and disappears for crystalline films. A theoretical-experimental study was performed on amorphous and crystalline materials to understand the influence of the defects on the photoluminescence properties. The theoretical band gap obtained by the difference of energy between the HOMO and LUMO levels is larger for crystalline structure when compared with amorphous material. This result, which is in agreement with experimental band gaps obtained from optical measurements, revealed the emergence of new electronic levels for the amorphous material, which are localized in the wide band gap of the crystalline structure. These new electronic levels may explain the photoluminescence observed at room temperature for LiNbO3 amorphous films.
