Frontonasal dysplasia: clinical evaluation on audiological and brainstem electrophysiological profiles

Frontonasal dysplasia (FND) is a rare malformative complex affecting the frontal portion of the face, the eyes and the nose; it may occur singly or associated with other clinical signs. No systematic studies describing hearing in this condition were found. AIM: To evaluate hearing sensitivity and sound stimulus conduction from cochlea to brainstem in patients with clinical signs of FND. METHODS: 21 patients with isolated or syndromic FND were submitted to a clinical (otological/vestibular antecedents and otoscopy) and instrumental (pure tone and speech audiometry, tympanometry and brainstem auditory evoked response) hearing evaluation. DESIGN: A clinical, cross-sectional observational prospective study. RESULTS: Hearing thresholds were normal in 15 (70%) patients, abnormal in 5 (25%), mostly with conductive hearing loss; one patient did not cooperate with testing. The tympanometric curve was type A in 30 (72%) ears, type C in 5 (12%), type As in 4 (9%) and type B in 3 (7%). The auditory brainstem response (ABR) showed no abnormalities. CONCLUSION: Patients with FND showed no abnormalities in the auditory system from cochlea to brainstem in this study. Mild conductive hearing loss found in some is probably related to cleft palate. Further evaluation of hearing pathways at higher levels is recommended.

Análise fitoquímica comparativa de flores e folhas de Casearia sylvestris SWARTZ

Casearia sylvestris Swartz (Salicaceae), conhecida como guaçatonga, é uma espécie vegetal distribuída amplamente pela América do Sul, ocorrendo em 22 estados brasileiros. Na medicina popular é utilizada no tratamento de picadas de cobra, úlceras gástricas, como cicatrizante, anti-inflamatório e antisséptico tópico. Extratos de suas folhas demonstraram atividade antiulcerogênica, anti-inflamatória e citotóxica em células tumorais, dentre outras. Diversos metabólitos secundários foram isolados e/ou identificados principalmente de suas folhas, incluindo monoterpenos, sesquiterpenos, diterpenos, compostos fenólicos, etc. Apesar do extenso conhecimento sobre ações farmacológicas e sobre a fitoquímica das folhas, há apenas um trabalho publicado sobre metabólitos secundários de suas flores. Portanto, foi proposto neste trabalho realizar análises cromatográficas e espectrométricas de extratos de folhas e flores de C. sylvestris Swartz com o objetivo de comparar os perfis químicos destes órgãos com ênfase em terpenos. Os extratos produzidos com diferentes solventes (hexano: acetato de etila: isopropanol; hexano e etanol 70 %) de folhas e flores foram obtidos por sonicação com rendimentos variando entre 0,03 e 23,39% (m/m), sendo os maiores rendimentos obtidos com etanol 70 %. Os óleos essenciais de folhas e flores foram obtidos por extração por arraste a vapor d`água e foram analisados por cromatografia em fase gasosa e o componente majoritário apresentado foi o biciclogermacreno, tanto em folhas como em flores; o óleo essencial de flores demonstrou ser mais complexo. Os extratos foram analisados por cromatografia em camada delgada e cromatografia líquida de alta eficiência com detector de arranjo de diodos. Construções gramaticais e questões estilísticas no livro Piccoli equivoci senza importanza, de Antonio Tabucchi

The translation project of some short stories of the book Piccoli equivoci senza importanza, written by the Italian writer Antonio Tabucchi, was performed during the academic years. This thesis target is to analyze grammatical and stylistic issues of the short stories; to achieve this goal, parts of the original texts and their respective translations were used. The grammar section approaches important aspects as idioms, false cognates and different verb regencies between Portuguese and Italian. The stylistic part focuses on Tabucchi´s choices regarding the narrator, focalization, types of speech and interior monologues in his texts; these options characterize the Italian writer´s style and make his stories plots intense. As a conclusion it can be noticed that this work is relevant to give a forward step in the Italian literature studies field, because it contributes to an important author style study and provides the analysis of which choices compound the text and the effects they cause

Uma viagem entre Tabucchi, Pessoa e Pirandello: proposta de tradução de Il signor Pirandello è desiderato al telefono, de Antonio Tabucchi

The present monography consists in a translation of the play “Il signor Pirandello è desiderato al telefono”, by the Italian writer Antonio Tabucchi. This translation is still unpublished in Brazil. The introduction emphasizes the relevance of this translation in the Brazilian literary context, due to its goal of dissemination of a piece that, besides presenting the contemporary author’s characteristics, shows the aspects of two important writers in the 20th century, Fernando Pessoa and Luigi Pirandello. The introduction also brings some biographical and bibliographical data about the involved authors. In the development section, before the translation itself, there is a selection of comments about the translated play, with the objective of contributing to the constitution of the Brazilian reader’s context. In our conclusion, there are the last comments about the translation and the importance of the monography to its writer

Este artigo objetiva, a partir de estudos de Antonio Candido voltados para a poesia lírica, rastrear o pensamento estético e crítico-teórico do autor sobre a matéria, bem como avaliar sua prática analítica do texto poético. Tal prática, coerente com o postulado na vasta obra do autor, ancora-se em dois eixos principais: o “árcade/ romântico” (voltado para o período formativo da literatura brasileira) e o “modernista” (que enfatiza a consolidação plena de nossa literatura).

As duas culturas: Antonio Candido e a formação da sociologia e da literatura no Brasil

Antonio Candido, author of fundamental papers to understand Brazil’s cultures process formation, in his works about sociology and literature formation, he draws an explanation of these process of cultural genesis by mean of referential and functional systems, that become possible Brazilian society expression though scientific and literary cultures. These processes and explanations look at for functional correlations between elements and system by mean of relationship between authors-works-receptors, nevertheless, it must to investigate the individual contributions of authors and works to formation of shapes and directions of system.

Flores do abismo, imagens do inconsciente [2012]

Presented in a rehearsal form, this article aims to bring out a historical discussion about the relationship between art-madness in Brazil. Result of a research that had as object the critical fortune written on the first exhibit of the Museum of Images of the Unconscious, this work aims to connect two little closer fields: art criticism and mental health, especially since Mário Pedrosa’s work. It was possible to ascertain, throughout the investigation, that there was a position taken by art critics at that time (the 1940s), that position is basically divided into two, briefly explored here: those who encouraged the exhibits, and thereby attested the artistic value of the work produced in the studio of Pedro II Psychiatric Center (where it was founded the Museum); and those who decried the artistic character of "unconscious images", as would be known the works that were produced there. Thus, we can say that, indeed, the virgin art – so entitled by Pedrosa – functioned as a kind of sting to the renewal of our health practices, but mainly influenced the completion of a cycle of modernism in our country.

Um passeio pelos bosques ficcionais de Antonio Tabucchi

The Italian writer Antonio Tabucchi (Pisa-1943, Lisbon-2012) is considered by the critic as one of the most representative voices in the contemporary European literature. The Literature, according to Tabucchi, exerts a fundamental role in society and it, still according to the writer, must cause disquietude, evoke doubts, raise questions and not tranquilize people’s mind. Thereby, it’s noticed that it’s one of the reasons why the tabucchian narrative incessantly dialogues with Luigi Pirandello’s and Fernando Pessoa's poetics, establishing a great fictional game in wich the people, the truths, the history and the world are shown, at the least, duplicated.
