In this paper we introduce a type of Hypercomplex Fourier Series based on Quaternions, and discuss on a Hypercomplex version of the Square of the Error Theorem. Since their discovery by Hamilton (Sinegre [1]), quaternions have provided beautifully insights either on the structure of different areas of Mathematics or in the connections of Mathematics with other fields. For instance: I) Pauli spin matrices used in Physics can be easily explained through quaternions analysis (Lan [2]); II) Fundamental theorem of Algebra (Eilenberg [3]), which asserts that the polynomial analysis in quaternions maps into itself the four dimensional sphere of all real quaternions, with the point infinity added, and the degree of this map is n. Motivated on earlier works by two of us on Power Series (Pendeza et al. [4]), and in a recent paper on Liouville’s Theorem (Borges and Mar˜o [5]), we obtain an Hypercomplex version of the Fourier Series, which hopefully can be used for the treatment of hypergeometric partial differential equations such as the dumped harmonic oscillation.

Objective: To compare cervical cytology test results among pregnant and non-pregnant women, and to assess associations with age, screening history, and onset of sexual intercourse. Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted of cervical smears obtained from women aged 18-34 years in the Campinas region of Brazil between January 2000 and December 2009. Eligible participants had not undergone cytological screening within the previous year and had no history of precursor lesions or cervical cancer. Multinomial logistic regression was performed for different age groups, with high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (HSILs) as the endpoint. Results: Overall, 3072 (0.4%) of 861 353 non-pregnant women and 135 (0.4%) of 37 568 pregnant women had HSILs. Odds of HSIL among pregnant and non-pregnant women did not differ in any age group. An increased age at first sexual intercourse among pregnant women reduced odds of HSILs in all age groups (odds ratio 0.9 [95% confidence interval 0.8-0.9] for all). Among women aged 21-24 years, 25-29 years, and 30-34 years, some associations were identified between an interval of less than 5 years since previous screening and reduced odds of HSILs. Conclusion: Mandatory cervical cytology screening does not seem to be necessary for pregnant women; protocols in place for non-pregnant women should be followed. In general, the studies of finite size effects in mesoscopic superconductors have been carried out in such a way that the temperature parameter is constant in the entire system. However, we could have situations where a real sample is near a heater source, as an example. In such situations, gradients of temperature are present. On the other hand, mesoscopic superconductors are interesting systems due to the fact that they present confinement effects which influence all the vortex dynamics. Thus, in this work we studied the influence of thermal gradients on the vortex dynamics in mesoscopic superconductors. For this purposes, we used the time dependent Ginzburg-Landau equations. The thermal gradients produce an asymmetric distribution of the currents around the system which, in turn, yield interesting vortex configurations and difficult the formation of giant vortices.

The short dental implants represent an option of previsible treatment, its main indication lives in the possibility of avoiding techniques surgical invasive. The literature in the display that the geometry of the implants is of vital importance, combined with wide diameters and surface treatment, mainly when the bone quality is unfavorable. The mechanical resistance can be enlarged, increasing the number of implants and being used the spliting among them. A rigorous protocol prosthodontist should be following with intention of to avoid oblique loads and to control habits parafuncionais. We aimed at to discuss, through a wide bibliographical revision the short dental implants, their characteristics and indications, giving emphasis to the aspects biomechanic of the same ones. Material and Method: The bases given: Pubmed, ISI and Dentistry Oral Science from 1990 to 2009, were consulted to identify researches related to the length of the dental implants, with emphasis to the considered short and the biomechanics related to the same ones. They were located 568 articles, being selected 69 that gathered the inclusion criteria. Result: Among these 69 selected, 26 articles agreed the evidence level. Conclusion: Inside of the limits of appraised data, it can be concluded that the short implants represent a good treatment alternative, especially for cases with reduced bone bed. However a rigorous indication protocol and use should be followed for warranty of the success of the treatment.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of long duration exercise program on physical fitness components of functional capacity in individuals with Parkinson disease (PD) and to evaluate ongoing effects of exercise after 8 to 10-week follow-up without exercise. Twenty-four individuals with PD were randomly assigned to two groups: generalized exercise program and stretching exercise program (control group). The generalized exercise program provided training in physical fitness components of functional capacity. The stretching exercise program was characterized by low intensity and volume, mainly with static exercises. Both groups were evaluated before (BI) and after the 4-month (AI) exercise program. In addition, the individuals of generalized exercise program were also evaluated after 8-month exercise program and after 8 to 10- week follow-up without exercise. The generalized exercise program improved flexibility (BI - 38.50±12.42 cm; AI - 44.00±12.74 cm) and agility (BI - 30.59±7.54 s; AI - 28.56±8.20 s) while the stretching exercise program worsened coordination (BI - 23.27±6.58 s; AI - 28.06±7.37 s) and aerobic resistance (BI- 13.64±3.76 min; AI - 17.27±5.15 min) and improved balance (BI - 44.00±7.79 pts; AI - 46.57±6.53 pts). Lower-limb strength and UPDRS-motor scale scores were better at 8 months (14.75±2.92 rep and 26.25±13.97 pts, respectively) compared to baseline (13.13±2.59 rep and 31.63±12.82 pts, respectively) and 4 months (13.50±1.93 rep and 30.38±14.52 pts, respectively) for generalized exercise program. However, the benefits of 8 months of exercise were lost after 8 to 10-week follow-up without exercise (lower-limb strength - 12.43±3.15 rep and UPDRS-motor scale - 32.57±14.05 pts). In conclusion, generalized exercise program improved the functional capacity in individuals with PD, differently of stretching exercise program. In addition, a long duration exercise program promoted benefits for functional capacity and disease progression in individuals with PD. However, benefits were lost after a short period without exercise.

The structure of Brazilian savannah, named locally as “cerrado”, tends to change if the human pressures, such as pasture and intensive fire, are suppressed showing a densification of the physiognomies throughout the time. Vegetation Index acquired from remotely sensed data has been a proper way to study and monitoring large areas, and the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) is one of the most used for this purpose. The aim of this study was to assess the dynamic of structural changes in protected and non-protected areas of cerrado vegetation using NDVI. For this purpose, three cerrado fragments in the state of São Paulo, Brazil, were evaluated for a 26 year time span from 1985 and 2011, being two of them protected against anthropogenic interference. Landsat 5 –Thematic Mapper images were used and processed in ArcGIS. In the protected areas NDVI indicated that the vegetation followed the expected trend of changes for cerrado, with more open physiognomies tending to be denser throughout this period of 26 years, whereas in the non-protected fragment the NDVI evidences human pressure, showing lower phytomass in 2011. NDVI showed to be efficient in detecting and monitoring changes in cerrado vegetation structure, and can be useful to study both, the natural dynamics of cerrado vegetation and the anthropogenic interference in protected areas.
