Thirty-eight Escherichia coli strains belonging to 14 human enteropathogenic serogroups were isolated from 33 of 208 water samples studied. No virulence factor or virulence-related gene sequences were found in any of the 38 strains analyzed. The results point out the importance of detecting specific virulence factors before incriminating water as a source of human diarrhea.

In this work, the catalytic intermediates for Fe(TPP)(+), Fe(TDCPP)(+), Fe(TFPP)(+), Mn(TPP)(+) and Mn(TDCPP)(+) supported on imidazole propyl gel with PhIO were studied by UV-Vis spectrophotometry. For Fe(TPP)+ and Fe(TFPP)+ the study was also monitored by EPR spectroscopy. The active catalytic intermediate observed for FeP-IPG is the ore-iron (IV) porphyrin pi cation radical Fe-IV(O)P.+, which is evidenced by a decrease in the intensity of the Sorer band. The total re-establishment of the initial Soret band intensity for Fe(TDCPP)IPG and Fe(TFPP)IPG at the end of the reaction shows that they were completely recovered, There are advantages in following the reactions of PNO with unsubstituted Fe(TPP)(+) and Mn(TPP)(+) on IPG by UV-Vis, since they were slower and allowed to 'see' the intermediate species without spectral interference from the recovered catalyst, since they are only partially recovered. With Fe(TPP)IPG, a band at 580 nm was detected at the beginning of the reaction, indicating the possible formation of a Fe-OIPh intermediate. Supporting Mn(TPP)(+) on IPG leads to a shift of band V from 478 nm to 488 nm. In the reaction of MnP-IPG with PhIO, we observed the disappearance of the band in 488 nm and the appearance of a band in 412 nm, which corresponds to the active catalytic intermediate Mn-V(O)P as the main component, as is expected for a more efficient system. The recovery of supported catalysts observed in these experiments was further proved with the possibility of their successive recyclings in cyclohexane oxidation reactions by PhIO.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: To validate hysteroscopic view with histology in cases of endometrial hyperplasia and cancer in patients with abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB)DESIGN: Retrospective study.(Canadian Task Force classification II-3).SETTING: University teaching hospitals in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, and private office in Rio de Janeiro.PATIENTS: Four thousand and fifty-four patients with AUB in whom hysteroscopic views were complete and the histologic result was conclusive.INTERVENTION: Four thousand and fifty-four office hysteroscopies with complete views and conclusive histologic results. The material for histologic examination was obtained through biopsy of the lesion in an outpatient unit or through the resection of the entire lesion in patients who underwent surgery. Histology was considered the gold standard and compared with the hysteroscopic view.MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS: In the histology of the 4054 examinations, 613 (15.2%) were endometrial hyperplasia, and 105 (2.6%) were endometrial cancer. The most frequent hysteroscopic finding was endometrial polyps (31.2%). In endometrial hyperplasia, the sensitivity of the hysteroscopic view was 56.3% (95% CI 52.21-60.2%), specificity was 89.1% (95% CI 88.0%-90.1%), positive predictive value (PPV) was 48.0% (95% CI 44.3%-51.7%), negative predictive value (NPV) was 92.0% (95% Cl 90.1%-92.9%), and accuracy was 72.7% (95% CI 70.7%-74.7%). Accuracy was defined as the proportion of correct results among the hysteroscopic examinations. In endometrial cancer, the sensitivity of the hysteroscopic view was 80.0% (95% Cl 71.1%-87.2%), specificity was 99.5% (95% CI 99.2%-99.7%), PPV was 81.5% (95% Cl 72.7%-88.5%), NPV was 99.5% (95% CI 99.2%-99.7%), and accuracy was 89.8% (95% CI, 85.9%-93.6%). In the 814 patients (20.0%) in whom the hysteroscopic view was normal, there were no false negatives for endometrial cancer; however, there were 37 (4.5%) false negatives for endometrial hyperplasia. In the histologic cases of endometrial cancer, 101 (96.2%) hysteroscopic views were compatible with cancer or hyperplasia (80.0% and 16.2%, respectively). Ninety-seven out of 103 hysteroscopic views with cancer findings (94.2%) had histologic diagnosis of cancer or hyperplasia (81.5% and 12.6%, respectively).CONCLUSION: It seems that even in face of good validity of hysteroscopic view for endometrial hyperplasia and cancer, histologic study is mandatory in the presence of any lesion as the hysteroscopic view cannot completely replace the histologic study in patients with AUB. This study evaluated the effectiveness of acidic low-fluoride dentifrices compared to conventional neutral dentifrices. Enamel blocks were submitted to pH cycling and treatment with slurries of dentifrices containing 0, 275, 412, 550 and 1,100 mu g F/g (pH 4.5 or 7.0), and also a commercial dentifrice (1,100 mu g F/g) and a commercial children's dentifrice (500 mu g F/ g). Variations in surface microhardness and in the mineral content in enamel after pH cycling were calculated. Enamel blocks treated with acidic dentifrices exhibited less mineral loss compared to neutral dentifrices (ANOVA; p < 0.05). The acidic dentifrices with 412 and 550 mu g F/g had the same effectiveness as the neutral 1,100-mu g F/g dentifrice and commercial 1,100-mu g F/g dentifrice. Copyright (c) 2007 S. Karger AG, Basel

Glasses in the binary system (100 - x)SbPO4-xWO3 (20 <= x <= 60, x in mol%) have been prepared and characterized. Differential thermal analysis (DTA) shows that the glass transition temperature, T-g increases from 412 degrees C, for samples containing 20 mol% of WO3 to 481 degrees C observed for glass containing 60 mol%. Sample containing 40 mol% in WO3 were observed to be the most stable against devitrification. The structural organization of the glasses has been studied by using Fourier transform infra-red (FTIR), Raman, P-31 Magic angle spinning (MAS) and spin echo nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopies. Results suggest two distinct networks comprising the glass structure, one with high SbPO4 content and the other characteristic of the highest WO3 content samples. The glasses present photochromic properties. Colour changes are observed for samples after exposure to ultraviolet or visible laser light. XANES, at L-1 absorption edge of tungsten, suggests partial reduction from W6+ to W5+ species during the laser irradiation. The photochromic effects and the colour changes, promoted by laser excitation, are reversible and easily removed by heat for during 1 h at 150 degrees C. Subsequent 'write/erase' cycles can be done without degradation of the glasses. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The objectives of the present study were to evaluate factors associated with estrous synchronization responses and pregnancy per insemination (P/AI) in Bos indicus beef cows submitted to progesterone-based fixed-time artificial insemination (FTAI) protocols. A total of 2388 cows (1869 Nellore and 519 crossbred Nellore x Angus) from 10 commercial farms were evaluated to determine the relationships among breed, body condition score (BCS) on the first day of the FTAI protocol, the occurrence of estrus between progesterone device removal and FTAI and diameter of largest ovarian follicle (LF) at FTAI on estrous synchronization responses and P/AI. Cows (n=412 primiparous; 1976 multiparous) received an intravaginal device containing progesterone or an ear implant containing norgestomet (a progestin), and an injection of estradiol at the beginning of the estrous synchronization protocol. Body condition was scored using a 1-5 scale on the first day of the FTAI protocol and at 30-60 days postpartum. Females received 300IU of equine chorionic gonadotropin (eCG) and PGF(2 alpha) on the day the progesterone device/implant was removed and were inseminated 48-60h later. At insemination, cows (n=2388) were submitted to an ultrasonographic exam to determine the diameter of the LF. Follicles were classified into four categories based on mean and standard deviation (SD) of the LF (LF1 = two SD below the mean; LF2 = mean minus one SD; LF3 = mean plus one SD; LF4 = two SD above the mean). Ovulation rate was determined in a subset of cows (n=813) by three consecutive ultrasonographic exams: (1) at time of progesterone device/implant removal, (2) at time of FTAI and (3) 48 h after FTAI. Ovulation was defined as the disappearance of a large follicle (>= 8.0 mm) that was previously recorded. Estrus was determined in a subset of the cows (n = 445) by the activation of a detection of estrous patch placed on the tail head on the day of progesterone device/implant removal. Pregnancy was diagnosed 30 days after FTAI. Pregnancy was influenced (P = 0.001) by follicle diameter [LF1 = 27.5% (81/295), LF2 = 46.6% (328/705), LF3 = 57.9% (647/1118), LF4 = 63.3% (171/270)] and the occurrence of estrus [estrus = 67.7% (174/257) and no estrus = 36.2% (68/188)]. Follicle diameter at FTAI influenced ovulation rate [LF1 = 42.5% (34/80), LF2 = 73.9% (161/218), LF3 = 95.8% (407/425), LF4 = 97.8% (88/90)], the occurrence of estrus [LF1 = 54.8% (51/93), LF2 = 33.6% (43/128), LF3 = 68.9% (126/183), LF4 = 90.2% (37/41)] and P/AI among cows that had ovulations [LF1 =32.4% (11/34), LF2 = 50.3% (81/161), LF3 = 60.0% (244/407), LF4 = 68.2% (60/88)]. Improving estrous responses between progesterone device withdrawal and FTAI and increasing the diameter of the LF at FTAI may be important aspects to achieve improved estrous synchronization responses and P/AI following progesterone/progestin and estradiol based FTAI protocols in suckled Bos indicus cows. The inoculation of soybean crop with Bradyrhizobium bacteria is a widespread practice, due to excellent results achieved in productivity, however, some doubt still arise in relation the need of application of mineral nitrogen at sowing. In that mean, this work aimed to evaluate the response of the doses at inoculant and mineral nitrogen in the sowing of crop soybean in area of first cultivation. The experiments were carried in the experimental field of the University of the Estate of Mato Grosso, Campus of Alta Floresta - MT, Brazil, in the growing seasons of 2006/2007 and 2007/2008. The experimental design was randomized blocks, in a factorial escheme 2 x 4, with four replications. The factors consisted in the inoculation of seeds with Bradyrhizobium japonicum *(3 e 6 mL kg(-1) of seeds), and nitrogen fertilizer at sowing *(0, 10, 20 e 40 kg ha(-1)). The following variables were evaluated: plant height, insertion height of first pod, number of pod per plant, number of grain per pod, mass of 100 grain and grain productivity. In the two growing seasons there was no significant difference for doses of inoculants applied in first year of cultivation with soybean. To nitrogen application at sowing of soybean crop there was quadratic effect to plant height and of insertion height of first pod and growing linear to number of pod per plant in the second year of cultivation, however, without significant increase the productivity.

Buprenorphine plasma concentrations were measured after administering buprenorphine (20 mu g/kg) into the lumbosacral epidural space of conscious cats chronically instrumented with an epidural catheter. Blood was collected from a jugular vein before injection and 15, 30, 45 and 60 min and 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 12 and 24 h after administration. Plasma buprenorphine concentrations were measured using ELISA. Background concentration (before injection) was 1.27 +/- 0.27 ng/mL (mean +/- SD). Including background concentration, the mean peak plasma concentration was obtained 15 min after injection (5.82 +/- 3.75 ng/mL), and ranged from 3.79 to 2.20 ng/mL (30 min-3 h), remaining between 1.93 and 1.77 ng/mL (412 h), and declined to 1.40 +/- 0.62 ng/mL at 24 h. Elimination half-life was 58.8 +/- 40.2 min and clearance 56.7 +/- 21.5 mL/min. Results indicate early rapid systemic uptake of buprenorphine from epidural administration with plasma concentrations similar to using buccal or IM routes by 15 min postinjection. Transitional cell carcinoma (TCC) of the bladder is a neoplasm with variability in its clinical behavior. Although there are several studies correlating stage and ABO isoantigen expression with invasiveness, there is no single predictor factor to assess the potential invasiveness, especially in the low grade, non-invasive TCC. In the present study we evaluated the correlation of histological grade plus stage and the expression of beta human chorionic gonadotropin (beta-hCG), in 100 cases of TCC, with the clinical behavior. These features were correlated with tumor progression in patients with at least two years of follow up. We observed more aggressiveness in G4 group (high grade and invasive) (93% had tumor progression) when compared to G1 group (low grade and superficial) (11% had tumor progression). However in 25.5% of the TCC cases (groups G2: low grade and invasive and G3: high grade and superficial) the clinical behavior was intermediate, showing some limitation in using grading and staging only, as a predictive factor. There was an expression of beta-hCG in 21.4% of the cases in up to 25% of the tumor cells without any trophoblastic morphology. These beta-hCG producing TCC had a strong correlation with aggressiveness: 39.1% and 12.8% of the TCC expressed beta-hCG with and without tumor progression, respectively.

We derive bounds on Higgs and gauge-boson anomalous interactions using the CDF data for the process pp̄ → γγγ + X. We use a linearly realized SU L(2) X U Y(1) invariant effective Lagrangian to describe the bosonic sector of the Standard Model, keeping the fermionic couplings unchanged. All dimension-six operators that lead to anomalous Higgs interactions involving γ and Z are considered. We also show the sensitivity that can be achieved for these couplings at Fermilab Tevatron upgrades. © 1998 Published by Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
