Erbium L-3-edge extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) measurements were performed on rare earth doped fluorosilicate and fluoroborate glasses and glass ceramics. The well known nucleating effects of erbium ions for the crystallization of cubic lead fluoride (based on x-ray diffraction measurements) and the fact that the rare earth ions are present in the crystalline phase (as indicated by Er3+ emission spectra) seem in contradiction with the present EXAFS analysis, which indicates a lack of medium range structural ordering around the Er3+ ions and suggests that the lead fluoride crystallization does not occur in the nearest neighbor distance of the rare earth ion. Molecular dynamics simulations of the devitrification process of a lead fluoride glass doped with Er3+ ions were performed, and results indicate that Er3+ ions lower the devitrification temperature of PbF2, in good agreement with the experimental results. The genuine role of Er3+ ions in the devitrification process of PbF2 has been investigated. Although Er3+ ions could indeed act as seeds for crystallization, as experiments suggest, molecular dynamics simulation results corroborate the experimental EXAFS observation that the devitrification does not occur at its nearest neighbor distance. The chemical modulation of agonistic behavior and conspecific recognition were tested in juveniles of the fish Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus (L.). After a 7-day isolation period, the fish were grouped (four individuals per aquarium) for 7 days. Then fish of alpha and beta ranks (previously matched for similar size) were paired in a neutral territory for analysis of their agonistic interaction. Pairs composed of alpha and beta fish were established with either fish from the same group (familiar) or from two different groups (unfamiliar). The pairs were tested in contiguous compartments, either with water exchange between the compartments or in the absence of water exchange. In each condition the fish were separated by a transparent glass partition. Twelve pairs were tested in each experimental condition. Fish behavior was videotaped and the following variables were analyzed: (a) frequency of and time spent in agonistic patterns, (b) latency to start fighting, and (c) duration of swimming. Water exchange between compartments decreased agonistic interactions. This effect, however, was more pronounced in pairs of fish coming from the same group (in this case, subordinate fish spent less time in confrontations than dominant ones). We conclude that chemical communication decreases aggression in this species by (1) inducing an alarm reaction and (2) increasing conspecific recognition (thus stabilizing the dominance hierarchy). 0.7125ZrF4-0.2375(1 - xLaF3 • xLnF3)-0.05AIF3 with x = 0.01, 0.02 and 0.03 for Ln = Er and x = 0.03 for Ln = Pr, Nd glasses were studied by differential thermal analysis (DTA), X-ray diffraction and optical spectroscopy. Avrami parameters (Ec and n) were obtained from DTA curves. With La3+ substitution a decrease in the stability against crystallization was observed. This decrease follows the order Er3+ > Nd3+ ≈ Pr3+ for 3% molar substitution. n values suggest an interface controlled growth mechanism with grain edge nucleation abler saturation. Two crystalline polymorphs of the LaZr3F15 phase were identified. With the substitution of 3 mol% of Pr3+, Nd3+ or Er3+ for La3+ only the crystallization of the rhombohedral α-LnZr3F15 phase was observed. An increase in Ω6 Judd's intensity parameter occurs with crystallization and also an increase in the 1.04 μm peak emission cross-section for Nd3+ 4I3/2 state suggesting the potential application of these glass ceramics in optical amplification devices. © 1997 Elsevier Science B.V.

SiO2 (1-x) - TiO2 (x) waveguides, with the mole fraction x in the range 0.07 - 0.20 and thickness of about 0.4 μm, were deposited on silica substrates by a dip-coating technique. The thermal treatments at 700-900°C, used to fully densify the xerogels, produce nucleation of TiO2 nanocrystals even for the lowest TiO2 content. The nucleation of TiO2 nanocrystals and their growth by thermal annealing up to 1300°C were studied by waveguide Raman spectroscopy, for the SiO2 (0.8) - TiO2 (0.2) composition. By increasing the annealing temperature, the Raman spectrum evolves from that typical of the silica-titania glass to that of anatase, but brookite phase is dominant at intermediate temperatures. In the low. frequency region (5-50 cm-1) of the Raman spectra, acoustic vibrations of the nanocrystals are observed. From the measured line shapes, we can deduce the size distribution of the particles. The results are compared with those obtained from the line widths in the X-ray diffraction patterns. Nanocrystals with a mean size in the range 4-20 nm are obtained, by thermal annealing in a corresponding range of 800-1300°C.

The crystallization of fluoroindate glasses doped with Gd3+, Mn2+ and Cu2+ heat treated at different temperatures, ranging from the glass transition temperature (Tg) to the crystallization temperature (Tc), are investigated by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and 19F nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). The EPR spectra indicate that the Cu2+ ions in the glass are located in axially distorted octahedral sites. In the crystallized glass, the g-values agreed with those reported for Ba2ZnF6, which correspond to Cu2+ in a tetragonal compressed F- octahedron and to Cu2+ on interstitial sites with a square-planar F- co-ordination. The EPR spectra of the Mn2+ doped glasses exhibit a sextet structure due to the Mn2+ hyperfine interaction. These spectra suggest a highly ordered environment for the Mn2+ ions (close to octahedral symmetry) in the glass. The EPR spectra of the recrystallized sample exhibit resonances at the same position, suggesting that the Mn2+ ions are located in sites of highly symmetric crystalline field. The increase of the line intensity of the sextet and the decrease of the background line in the thermal treated samples suggest that the Mn2+ ions move to the highly ordered sites which contribute to the sextet structure. The EPR spectra of the Gd3+ doped glasses exhibit the typical U-spectrum of a s-state ion in a low symmetry site in disordered systems. The EPR of the crystallized glasses, in contrast, have shown a strong resonance in g ≈ 2.0, suggesting Gd3+ ions in environment close to cubic symmetry. The 19F NMR spin-lattice relaxation rates were also strongly influenced by the crystallization process that takes over in samples annealed above Tc. For the glass samples (doped or undoped) the 19F magnetization recoveries were found to be adjusted by an exponential function and the spin-lattice relaxation was characterized by a single relaxation time. In contrast, for the samples treated above Tc, the 19F magnetization-recovery becomes non-exponential. A remarkable feature of our results is that the changes in the Cu2+, Mn2+, Gd3+ EPR spectra and NMR relaxation, are always observed for the samples annealed above Tc. © 2006 Elsevier B.V. The search for new methods of manufacture of glass-ceramics with controlled porosity and permeability is interesting of the industrial and commercial point of view, and a challenge of great complexity. Porous glass-ceramics produced by sintering and crystallization of glasses can find applications, for example, as filters, materials with bactericidal properties, bio-implants, as catalytic and enzymes supports, among others. An alternative and low cost method of ceramic manufacture reaching different levels of porosity, for diverse purposes, is the conformation assisted by addition of starch, known as consolidation with starch. The objective of this project is to study the process of conformation with starch for making porous glass-ceramics from a commercial glass in the system Na2O-CaO-SiO2, whose kinetics of sintering by viscous flow and surface crystallization are known. The method of conformation with starches is innovative for glass-ceramics and its development opens the way for obtaining a new class of materials. We found a possible route for the production of porous compacts of glass particles, from the powder preparation to the removal of starch. It was observed that a glass powder obtained by dry milling in a ball mill with alumina balls for 24 h, afterwards mixed with water in an eccentric ball mill for 2 h, without the addition of a deflocculant, and subsequently mixed with starch also in an eccentric ball mill for 5 min resulted in slurries stable against sedimentation

The use of ceramic materials in ballistic armor is considerable. Such materials can be very harder and lighter than metallic materials commonly used and it presents advantages to replace metallic materials when necessary toughness can be achieved. However, as SiC and Al2O3 ceramic, traditionally used for shielding, still have high manufacturing cost or low density do not have enough to shield applications such as aircraft. An alternative is the glass-ceramics, ceramics obtained by controlled crystallization of glasses, whose properties can be adjusted by choosing the chemical composition of glass, heat treatment of crystallization and special treatments such as ion exchange on the surface, resulting in increased mechanical strength . The objective of this project is to study the kinetics of crystallization of a glass composition based on cordierite (2MgO.2Al2O3.5SiO2), low density and high hardness, for the manufacture of glass-ceramics for ballistic tests. Shown in this report are results of heat treatment of crystallization and characterization by thermal analysis (DSC) glass obtained previously, indicating uneven distribution of crystals, and drying, weighing, mixing of raw materials and a new fusion of glass, the same composition
