Objectives. This study evaluated the effect of thermal- and mechanical-cycling on the shear bond strength of three low-fusing glassy matrix dental ceramics to commercial pure titanium (cpTi) when compared to conventional feldspathic ceramic fused to gold alloy.Methods. Metallic frameworks (diameter: 5 min, thickness: 4 mm) (N = 96, n = 12 per group) were cast in cpTi and gold alloy, airborne particle abraded with 150 mu m aluminum oxide. Low-fusing glassy matrix ceramics and a conventional feldspathic ceramic were fired onto the alloys (thickness: 4mm). Four experimental groups were formed; Gr1 (control group): Vita Omega 900-Au-Pd alloy; Gr2: Ticeram-cpTi; Gr3: Super Porcelain Ti-22-cpTi and G4: Vita Titankeramik-cpTi. While half of the specimens from each ceramic-metal combination were randomly tested without aging (water storage at 37 C for 24h only), the other half were first thermocycled (6000 cycles, between 5 and 55 C, dwell time: 13 s) and then mechanically loaded (20,000 cycles under SON load, immersion in distilled water at 37 C). The ceramic-alloy interfaces were loaded under shear in a universal test machine (cross-head speed: 0.5 mm/min) until failure occur-red. Failure types were noted and the interfaces of the representative fractured specimens from each group were examined with stereo microscope and scanning electron microscope (SEM). in an additional study (N = 16, n = 2 per group), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) analysis was performed from ceramic-alloy interfaces. Data were analyzed using ANOVA and Tukey's test.Results. Both ceramic-metal combinations (p < 0.001) and aging conditions (p < 0,001) significantly affected the mean bond strength values. Thermal- and mechanical-cycling decreased the bond strength (MPa) results significantly for Gr3 (33.4 +/- 4.2) and Gr4 (32.1 +/- 4.8) when compared to the non-aged groups (42.9 +/- 8.9, 42.4 +/- 5.2, respectively). Gr1 was not affected significantly from aging conditions (61.3 +/- 8.4 for control, 60.7 +/- 13.7 after aging) (p > 0.05). Stereomicroscope images showed exclusively adhesive failure types at the opaque ceramic-cpTi interfacial zone with no presence of ceramic on the substrate surface but with a visible dark titanium oxide layer in Groups 2-4 except Gr1 where remnants of bonder ceramic was visible. EDS analysis from the interfacial zone for cpTi-ceramic groups showed predominantly 34.5-85.1% O(2) followed by 1.1-36.7% Aland 0-36.3% Si except for Super Porcelain Ti-22 where a small quantity of Ba (1.4-8.3%), S (0.7%) and Sn (35.3%) was found. In the Au-Pd alloy-ceramic interface, 56.4-69.9% O(2) followed by 15.6-26.2% Si, 3.9-10.9% K, 2.8-6% Na, 4.4-9.6% Al and 0-0.04% Mg was observed.Significance. After thermal-cycling for 6000 times and mechanical-cycling for 20,000 times, Triceram-cpTi combination presented the least decrease among other ceramic-alloy combinations when compared to the mean bond strength results with Au-Pd alloy-Vita Omega 900 combination. Purpose: To evaluate the influence of surface treatment on the shear bond strength between a Co-Cr alloy and two ceramics.Materials and Methods: Forty-eight metal cylinders were made (thickness: 4 mm, height: 3.7 mm) according ISO TR 11405. The 48 metallic cylinders were divided into four groups (n = 12), according to the veneering ceramic (StarLight Ceram and Duceram Kiss) and surface treatments: air-particle abrasion with Al(2)O(3) or tungsten drill (W). Gr1: StarLight + Al(2)O(3); Gr2: StarLight + W; Gr3: Duceram + Al(2)O(3); and Gr4: Duceram + W. The specimens were aged using thermal cycling (3000 x, 5 to 55 degrees C, dwell time: 30 seconds, transfer time: 2 seconds). The shear test was performed with a universal testing machine, using a load cell of 100 kg (speed: 0.5 mm/min) and a specific device. The bond strength data were analyzed using ANOVA and Tukey's test (5%), and the failure modes were analyzed using an optical microscope (30x).Results: The means and standard deviations of the shear bond strengths were (MPa): G1 (57.97 +/- 11.34); G2 (40.62 +/- 12.96); G3 (47.09 +/- 13.19); and G4 (36.80 +/- 8.86). Ceramic (p = 0.03252) and surface treatment (p = 0.0002) significantly affected the mean bond strength values. Conclusions: Air-particle abrasion with Al(2)O(3) improved the shear bond strength between metal and ceramics used.

This study evaluated the effects of mechanical and thermal cycling on the flexural strength (ISO 9693) of three brands of ceramics fused to commercially pure titanium (cpTi). Metallic frameworks of 25 x 3 x 0.5 mm dimensions (N = 84) were cast in cpTi, followed by 150-mu m aluminum oxide airborne particle abrasion at a designated area of the frameworks (8 x 3 mm). Bonder and opaque ceramic were applied on the frameworks, and then the corresponding ceramic (Triceram, Super Porcelain Ti-22, Vita Titankeramik) was fired onto them (thickness: 1 mm). Half of the specimens from each ceramic-metal combination were randomly tested without aging (only water storage at 37 degrees C for 24 hours), while the other half were mechanically loaded (20,000 cycles under 10 N load, immersion in distilled water at 37 degrees C) and thermocycled (3,000 cycles, between 5-55 degrees C, dwell time of 13 seconds). After the flexural strength test, failure types were noted. Mechanical and thermal cycling decreased the mean flexural strength values significantly (p<0.05) for all the three ceramic-cpTi combinations tested when compared to the control group. In all the three groups, failure type was exclusively adhesive at the opaque ceramic-cpTi interfacial zone with no presence of ceramic on the substrate surface except for a visible oxide layer.

Thermally sprayed HVOF coatings are increasingly being used in industrial applications where high wear and corrosion resistance are needed [1,2]. In this paper, electrochemical ac and de experiments were used in order to obtain the corrosion resistance of coated steel with different numbers of Cr3C2-NiCr layers. This work has been performed in order to determine the role of coating thickness in the corrosion behaviour of a steel protected with cermet thermally sprayed coatings. It is known that a thicker layer protects better against corrosion when a metallic coating is evaluated. But cermet coatings, such as Cr3C2-NiCr, contain higher levels of porosity and residual stresses than metallic coatings, which really could influence the corrosion resistance of the deposited layer. Electrochemical measurements, such as Open-Circuit Potential (E-Osubset of), Polarisation Resistance (RP) and Cyclic Voltammetry (CV), were performed in an aerated 3.4 NaCI media (%wt.). Electrochemical Impedance Measurements (EIS) were also done in order to obtain a mechanism that explains the corrosion process. Structural Characterisation was carried out by means of Optical and Scanning Electron Microscopes (OM, SEM) with an Energy Dispersive Spectrometry analyser (EDS). Results show that the corrosion resistance of the complete system is mainly influenced by the substrate behaviour. The application of a higher number of deposited layers did not substantially increase their anticorrosive properties. Stress generation during the spraying deposition process plays an important role in the behaviour of the coated steel against corrosion phenomena. (C) 2002 Elsevier B.V. B.V All rights reserved.

Ferroelectric thin films belong to a class of materials with great technological importance in optic fibers, micro-electromechanical systems, and microprocessors and computers memories. The (1-x)PbMg1/3Nb2/3O3(x)PbTiO3 (PMN-PT) thin films, with x=0, 0.1, 0.35 and 0.5, were prepared by Pechini's process and deposited by spin-coating on Si(100), Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si(100) and quartz substrates. The goal of the present paper is to verify the thermal treatment influence on the perovskite phase formation, which is desirable for these applications. The phase formation was analyzed by X-ray diffraction. The film's surface was characterized by atomic force microscopy to analyze the roughness and the homogeneity. The results of this study indicate that the optimum conditions for obtaining the perovskite phase using a Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si(100) substrate, were drying each deposited layer at 140 degreesC (heating plate), and a final thermal treatment at 600 degreesC for 3 h in a closed system with a lead-rich atmosphere. Cr3C2-NiCr and WC-Ni coatings are widely used for wear applications at high and room temperature, respectively. Due to the high corrosion resistance of NiCr binder, Cr3C2-NiCr coatings are also used in corrosive environments. The application of WC-Ni coatings in corrosive media is 14 not recommended due to the poor corrosion resistance of the (pure Ni) metallic matrix. It is well known that the addition of Cr to the metallic binder improves the corrosion properties. Erosion-corrosion performance of thermal spray coatings is widely influenced by ceramic phase composition, the size of ceramic particles and also the composition of the metallic binder. In the present work, two types of HVOF thermal spray coatings (Cr3C2-NiCr and WC-Ni) obtained with different spray conditions were studied and compared with conventional micro-cracked hard chromium coatings. Both as-sprayed and polished samples were tested under two erosion-corrosion conditions with different erosivity. Tungsten carbide coatings showed better performance under the most erosive condition, while chromium carbide coatings were superior under less erosive conditions. Some of the tungsten carbide coatings and hard chromium showed similar erosion-corrosion behaviour under more and less erosive conditions. The erosion-corrosion and electrochemical results showed that surface polishing improved the erosion-corrosion properties of the thermally sprayed coatings. The corrosion behaviour of the different coatings has been compared using Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) and polarization curves. Total material loss due to erosion-corrosion was determined by weight loss measurements. An estimation of the corrosion contribution to the total weight loss was also given. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V.

We report optical and morphological properties of poly(2-methoxy-5-hexyloxy-p-phenylenevinylene) (OC1OC6-PPV) films processed by casting, spin-coating (SC) and Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) techniques. The absorption spectra are practically the same, with an absorption maximum at approximately at 500 nm. For the photoluminescence (PL) spectra at low temperature (T=10K), a small but significant difference was noted in the cast film, in comparison with the LB and SC films. The zero-phonon transition shifted from 609 nm for the LB film to 615 and 621 nm for the SC and cast films, respectively. At room temperature, the PL spectra are similar for all films, and blue shifted by ca. 25 nm in comparison with the spectra at low temperature due to thermal disorder. Using atomic force microscopy (AFM) we inferred that the distinctive behavior of the cast film, probably associated with structural defects, is related to the large thickness of this film. The surface roughness, which was surprisingly higher for the LB film, apparently played no role in the emission properties of OC1OC6-PPV films.

An application of photoacoustic technique is developed for determining the thermal diffusivity coefficient and the thermal conductivity of transparent materials. The backing material which supports the sample is made optically opaque, i.e., it entirely absorbs the incident light, and the converted heat diffuses through the sample heating the gas in contact with its opposite surface. The method is illustrated by fitting voltage amplitude and phase signals versus the chopping frequency in the photoacoustic cell, according to a theoretical model of heat diffusion. Thermal parameters obtained for three polymers compare very well with results from the literature. (C) 1995 American Institute of Physics.

The vibrational spectra of palladium phthalocyanine (PdPc) evaporated thin solid films are reported, including the resonance Raman scattering, surface-enhanced resonance Raman scattering (SERRS) and SERRS mapping of the film surface using micro-Raman spectroscopy with 633 nm laser radiation. SERRS of PdPc was obtained by evaporating an overlayer of Ag nanoparticles on to the PdPc film on glass. The SERRS enhancement factor is estimated as similar to10(4) with reference to PdPc evaporated films on glass. The molecular organization of the PdPc evaporated films was probed using transmission and reflection-absorption infrared spectra. It was established that a random molecular distribution found in PdPc evaporated films is independent of temperature. No evidence of thermal degradation due to thermal annealing was found in the films. Electronic absorption and emission spectra are also discussed. Copyright (C) 2002 John Wiley Sons, Ltd.

Statement of the Problem: the ceramic composition and surface microstructure of all-ceramic restorations are important components of an effective bonding substrate. Hydrofluoric acid and sandblasting are well-known procedures for surface treatment; however, surface treatment for high alumina-containing and lithium disilicate ceramics have not been fully investigated.Purpose: This in vitro study evaluated the tensile bond strength of resin cement to two types of ceramic systems with different surface treatments. Methods and Materials: Thirty specimens of each ceramic system were made according to the manufacturer's instructions and embedded in polyester resin. Specimens of In-Ceram Alumina [1] and IPS Empress 2 [E] were distributed to three groups with differing surface treatments (n=10): sandblasting with 50 jam aluminum oxide (APA); sandblasting with 110 pm aluminum oxide modified with silica particles (ROCATEC System-RS); a combination of sandblasting with APA and 10% hydrofluoric acid etching (HA) for two minutes on In-Ceram and for 20 seconds for IPS Empress 2. After the respective surface treatments, all the specimens were silanated, and Rely-X resin cement was injected onto the ceramic surface and light polymerized. The specimens were stored in distilled water at 37 degrees C for 24 hours and thermally cycled 1,100 times (5 degrees C/55 degrees C). The tensile bond strength test was performed in a universal testing machine at a 0.5 mm/minute crosshead speed. Results: the mean bond strength values (AWa) for IPS Empress 2 were 12.01 +/- 5.93 (EAPA), 10.34 +/- 1.77 (ERS) and 14.49 +/- 3.04 (EHA). The mean bond strength values for In-Ceram Alumina were 9.87 +/- 2.40 JAPA) and 20.40 +/- 6.27 (IRS). All In-Ceram specimens treated with 10% hydrofluoric acid failed during thermal cycling. Conclusion: the Rocatec system was the most effective surface treatment for In-Ceram Alumina ceramics; whereas, the combination of aluminum oxide sandblasting and hydrofluoric acid etching for 20 seconds worked more effectively for Empress 2 ceramics.

A polymeric precursor method was used to synthesis PbTiO3 amorphous thin film processed at low temperature. The luminescence spectra of PbTiO3 amorphous thin films at room temperature revealed an intense single-emission band in the visible region, the visible emission band was found to be dependent on the thermal treatment history, Photoluminescence properties Versus different annealing temperatures were investigated. The experimental results (XRD, AFM, FL) indicate that the nature of photoluminescence (PL) must be related to the disordered structure of PbTiO3 amorphous thin films, Copyright (C) 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Electrodes of RhxTi(1-x) O-y nominal composition were prepared by thermal decomposition of the chloride or nitrate precursor salts dissolved in strongly acidic medium and applied by brush to both sides of a Tidegrees support. A systematic study of the influence of calcination temperature and time as well as oxygen flux was conducted. The coatings were characterised by SEM, EDAX, XRD, open circuit potential measurements and cyclic voltammetry (CV). Visible-ultraviolet spectrophotometry was employed to identify the chemical form of the precursor in solution while thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) was used to assess the decomposition temperature ranges. Optimisation of the coating preparation parameters showed coatings obtained from [Rh(H2O)(6)](NO3)(3) precursor dissolved in HNO3 1:2 (v/v) and fired at 430 degreesC for 2 h in a 5 1 min (-1) oxygen stream-furnished stable electrodes having the highest electrochemically active surface area.
