The goal of mentoplasty is to improve chin projection. Traditionally, this is accomplished by either mandibular osteotomy or alloplastic implants. However, these procedures are not free of complications. This report describes gliding mentoplasty, a novel, simple technique for chin projection. The 12 patients in this study underwent gliding mentoplasty. By means of a 2-cm intraoral incision, a subcutaneous dissection was made in the caudal direction. The dissection then proceeded in the subperiosteal plane, leaving a 1-cm cuff of muscle attached to the bone, and advanced toward the lower border of the chin. Subsequently, the dissection was extended laterally, and the whole mental area was dissected from the surrounding tissue. Three 2-0 monofilament nylon sutures were placed in the submandibular periosteum and connected through the remaining muscle cuff to the periosteum. These key sutures allowed the submandibular region to slide forward, project the subcutaneous tissue and mentalis muscle, define the labiomental fold, and improve the pogonion projection.Gliding mentoplasty resulted in a symmetric projection of the chin in all cases. In two patients, a submandibular dimple developed, which spontaneously resolved in 1 month. No revision surgery was performed, and no tissue relapse was noted. The mean follow-up period was 24.7 +/- A 5.17 months (range 19-33 months). All the patients were satisfied with the result.Gliding mentoplasty is a simple, easy-to-perform, rapid surgical technique of chin projection that produces low pain, rapid recovery, and excellent cosmetic results. This journal requires that authors assign a level of evidence to each article. The oral and oropharyngeal cancer is aggressive and, in Brazil, the incidence is considered one of the world’s tallest, the most common of head and neck. It affects males more intensively and 70% of cases are in adults over 50 years of age. It is located usually on the floor of the mouth and tongue. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to report a case of male patient, 78 years of age, leukoderma who sought hospital care. Reported frequent smoking and alcoholism. On physical examination headgear, there was the presence of lymph node fixed, painless 1.5 to 2 cm in diameter in the submandibular region. Physical examination intraoral ulcer was found at about 5 cm at its greatest extent, localized to the left oral floor region of the oropharynx, reddish, hardened edges, surface and bottom corrugated carton. The differential diagnosis suggested was traumatic ulcer, paracoccidioidomycosis and squamous cell carcinoma. The approach employed was obtained by incisional biopsy and the piece sent to histopathological analysis, confirming the case of squamous cell carcinoma. The treatment consisted in clarifying the patient about the disease and the need to search for an oncology center. It is concluded that the oral clinical examination is accurate in all major injuries to mouth, even if the chief complaint does not focus on this. In individuals at high risk examination should be systematic and individuals with suspicious lesions should be referred to specialist consultation.

This study evaluated the influence of Psidium cattleianum Sabine (Myrtaceae) and Myracrodruon urundeuva Allemão (Anacardiaceae) aqueous extracts on S. mutans counts and dental enamel micro-hardness of rats submitted to a cariogenic challenge. Sixty Wistar rats were distributed in three groups and received water (control) or aqueous extracts of Psidium cattleianum or Myracrodruon urundeuva as hydration solution. Initially the animals had their sublingual and submandibular salivary glands surgically removed and the parotid ducts ligated. Then the rats were inoculated with 106 CFU of Streptococcus mutans ATCC 35668 and were fed with a cariogenic diet. To detect and quantify the presence of S. mutans, oral biofilms were sampled and microbial DNA was extracted and submitted to amplification by means of real-time PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction). After seven weeks the animals were sacrificed and enamel demineralization was analyzed by cross-sectional micro-hardness. Both extracts produced a significant reduction on S. mutans counts and decreased the enamel demineralization. It can be concluded that the extracts tested had a significant effect on S. mutans in oral biofilm of the rats, decreasing S. mutans accumulation and enamel demineralization.

To evaluate the impact of iodine-131 therapy received during childhood and adolescence and correlate it with the quality of life in these patients. Methods: We studied 19 patients diagnosed with cancer in childhood or adolescence who underwent thyroidectomy and supplemental therapy with I-131. We also recruited a control group of healthy subjects with the same demographic parameters. All patients were subjected to a scintigraphy examination of the salivary glands, and were also asked to complete a questionnaire in order to assess their overall quality of life. In addition, a more specific questionnaire for patients with head and neck cancer was also given to all study participants. Results: The quantitative and qualitative analyses of the salivary glands showed functional deficits with greater involvement of the parotid gland for volume, concentration and excretion. The right submandibular gland showed significant changes for volume in the patient group. The questionnaires made it possible to observe significant differences between the patient and control groups for symptoms such as thick saliva, dry mouth and speech problems. Conclusion: In spite of being very effective and widely used, iodine radionuclide therapy is correlated with a lower quality of life in young people.
