The volume of liquid effluent generated in cattle slaughterhouses is quite high and cannot be released untreated in water bodies due to its high pollution load of predominantly organic origin. To minimize the environmental impacts of its industrial wastewater and meet the local environmental legislation, abattoirs shall make the treatment of these effluents. The present work aims to develop the study of a reactor by sequential batch pilot scale, in order to optimize their performance in treating wastewater from a cattle slaughterhouse. The treatment system used was developed and installed in the Laboratory of Wastewater Treatment, in Faculty of Science and Technology UNESP, Presidente Prudente campus. The procedure used followed the operation of sequential batch reactors, in which all processes and treatment operations occurring sequentially in a single unit, by establishing specific operating cycles, which comprise the following separated phases: aerobic reaction, anoxic reaction, sedimentation and emptying. Aiming to improve the quality of treatment was planned the addition of coagulant Poly Aluminum Chloride (PAC) in the reactor, by determining their optimal dosage by Jar-test trials. Were prepared four steps with specific operating cycles: step one or acclimatization (10 hour of aeration, one hour and 30 minutes of sedimentation and 30 minutes for exchanging the effluent); step 2 (6 hours of aeration or aerobic phase, 4 hours and 45 minutes of stirring or anoxic phase and 1 hour and 15 minutes for sedimentation and exchange effluent); step 3 (2 hours and 30 minutes of aeration, 8 hours and 15 minutes of stirring and 1 hour and 15 minutes for sedimentation and exchange) and step 4 (2 hours of aeration, 8 hours and 45 minutes of stirring and 1 hour and 15 minutes for sedimentation and exchange)... This study reports the immobilization of a new lipase isolated from oleaginous seeds of Pachira aquatica, using beads of calcium alginate (Alg) and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA). We evaluated the morphology, number of cycles of reuse, optimum temperature, and temperature stability of both immobilization methods compared to the free enzyme. The immobilized enzymes were more stable than the free enzyme, keeping 60% of the original activity after 4 h at 50°C. The immobilized lipase was reused several times, with activity decreasing to approximately 50% after 5 cycles. Both the free and immobilized enzymes were found to be optimally active between 30 and 40°C.

This study investigated the microbial action in soil on poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) films and a PLLA/PVC 7 : 3 blend, using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), contact angle and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The films (50 mu m) were obtained from the evaporation of dichloromethane solutions and buried in soil columns, in controlled conditions, for 120 days. The results showed that the surface of the PLLA films and blend became 18 and 31% more hydrophilic, respectively. The morphology of the films also changed after 120 days of microbial treatment, particularly that of the PLLA phase in the blend, confirmed by structural and conformational changes in the FTIR CO region at 12001000 cm1 and an increase in the relative intensity of the band at 1773 cm1, which was attributed to C O group vibration due to a rotational isomer in the interlamellar region (semi-ordered region). Besides the biotreated PVC presented changes in the C-Cl band at 738 cm1, due to the presence of some PVC conformational isomer. (C) 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2012

The thermal behavior of blends of poly(vinylidene fluoride), or PVDF, and poly(o-methoxyaniline) doped with toluene sulfonic acid was studied by thermogravimetic analysis, electrical conductivity measurements, differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. Blends with thermal and electrical conductivity stabler than the conductive polymer alone were obtained. Nevertheless, degradation occurs after a long period of time (500 h) at high temperatures. The possible association of the conductivity decay with dopant loss, degradation and structural and morphological changes of the blend is discussed. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd.

The phase transition from the non-polar α-phase to the polar β-phase of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) has been investigated using micro-Raman spectroscopy, which is advantageous for being a non-destructive technique. Films of α-PVDF were subjected to stretching under controlled rates and at 80°C, the transition to β-PVDF being monitored by the decrease in the Raman band at 794 cm-1 characteristic of the α-phase, with the concomitant increase in the 839 cm-1 band characteristic of the β-phase. Poling with negative corona discharge was found to affect the a-PVDF morphology improving the Raman bands related to this crystalline phase. This effect is minimized for films stretched to higher ratios. Significantly, corona-induced effects could not be observed with the other experimental techniques, viz. X-ray diffraction and infrared spectroscopy.
