This work deals with the synthesis and thermal decomposition of complexes of general formula: Ln(beta-dik)(3)L (where Ln=Tb(+3), beta-dik=4,4,4-trifluoro-1-phenyl-1,3butanedione(btfa) and L=1,10-fenantroline(phen) or 2,2-bipiridine(bipy). The powders were characterized by melting point, FTIR spectroscopy, LTV-visible, elemental analysis, scanning differential calorimeter(DSC) and thermogravimetry(TG). The TG/DSC curves were obtained simultaneously in a system DSC-TGA, under nitrogen atmosphere. The experimental conditions were: 0.83 ml.s(-1) carrier gas flow, 2.0 +/- 0.5 mg samples and 10 degrees C.min(-1) heating rate. The CHN elemental analysis of the Tb(btfa)(3)bipy and Tb(btfa)(3)phen complexes, are in good agreement with the expected values. The IR spectra evinced that the metal ion is coordinated to the ligands via C=O and C-N groups. The TG/DTG/DSC curves of the complexes show that they decompose before melting. The profiles of the thermal decomposition of the Tb(btfa)3phen and Tb(btfa)3bipy showed six and five decomposition stages, respectively. Our data suggests that the thermal stability of the complexes under investigation followed the order: Tb(btfa)(3)phen < Tb(btfa)(3)bipy.

In this work, the effect of the substrate microstructure on the formation of SnO2 membranes and of the sintering conditions on their porosity have been analysed. Samples have been prepared by colloidal suspensions cast on alumina or kaolin substrates. Supported membranes have been characterized by Hg porosimetry, MEV, XRD and N-2 adsorption-desorption isotherms. The results show that the narrower pore size distribution of alumina substrate allowed to prepare membranes more homogeneous and free of cracks than that supported on kaolin. The crystallite and pore sizes of the membranes could be controlled by adjusting the temperature of sintering, allowing materials with adequate microstructure with application for ultrafiltration process.

This study aims to evaluate the effect of using anionic collagen membranes in guided tissue regeneration treatment of Class II furcation lesions in dogs. The defects were created in the buccal furcation of 16 mandibular premolars of four dogs. After 56 days without plaque control, the sites were scaled and divided into two groups according to the treatment applied: control sites, open flap debridement; and test sites, guided tissue regeneration treatment. The animals were killed after 3 months. Histological and histometrical analyses showed that the collagen membrane was better than open flap debridement in terms of newly formed cementum and epithelial migration prevention. It provided effective blockade of epithelial tissue and promoted regeneration of lost periodontal tissues, suggesting that the membrane warrants further study. (C) 1997 Elsevier B.V. Limited. Thioglycolic acid-capped Use quantum dots (QDs) were assembled on glass substrates with two distinct polyelectrolytes, viz poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) and poly(amidoamine) (PAMAM), generation 4 dendrimer, via the layer-by-layer (LbL) technique. Films containing up to 30 polyelectrolyte/QD bilayers were prepared. The growth of the multilayers was monitored with UV-vis spectroscopy, which showed an almost linear increase in the absorbance of the 2.8 nm QDs at 535 nm with the number of deposited bilayers. AFM measurements estimated a film thickness of 3 nm per bilayer for the PAH/Cdse films. The adsorption process and the optical properties of the PAMAM/CdSe LbL films were further analyzed layer-by-layer using surface plasmon resonance (SPR), from which a thickness of 3.2 nm was found for a PAMAM/CdSe bilayer. Photoluminescence measurements revealed higher photooxidation of the quantum dots in PAH/CdSe than in PAMAM/CdSe films. (c) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The system of two parallel planar, arbitrarily charged surfaces immersed in a solution containing only one ionic species, the counterions, is completely analyzed under a mean field Poisson-Boltzmann approach. Results for the pressure, reduced potential, and counterionic concentration are graphically displayed for two dissociating membranes and for a dissociating and an adsorbing membrane. The results indicate that the system of two planar parallel dissociating membranes acts as a buffer for pressure values and for counterionic concentration values in regions interior to and far from the membranes. The results are related to properties of planar or quasiplanar structures in biological cells.

Cellulose-phosphate composite membranes have been prepared from bacterial cellulose membranes ( BC) and sodium polyphosphate solution. The structure and thermal behavior of the new composites were evaluated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), P-31-nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetry (TG) and thermomechanical analysis (TMA). From XRD analyses the I alpha and I beta cellulose crystalline phases were identified together with crystalline sodium phosphate that covers the cellulose microfibrils as revealed by SEM. P-31 NMR spectra show peaks assigned to Q(0) and Q(1) phosphate structures to be compared to the Q(2) units that characterize the precursor polyphosphate. Glass transition temperature, T-g, obtained from TMA curves and thermal stability obtained from TG and DSC measurements, were observed to be dependent on the phosphate content.

The preparation of crack-free SnO2 supported membranes requires the development of new strategies of synthesis capable to allow controlled changes of surface chemistry and to improve the processability of supported layers. In this way, the controlled modification of the SnO2 nanoparticle surface by adding capping molecules like Tiron(R) ((OH)(2)C6H2(SO3Na)(2)) during the sol-gel process was studied, aiming to obtain high performance membranes. Colloidal suspensions were prepared by hydrolyzing SnCl4.5H(2)O aqueous solution with NH4OH in presence of Tiron(R). The effect of the amount of Tiro(R) (from I to 20 wt.%) on the structural features of nanoparticles, powder redispersability and particle-solution interface properties was investigated by X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS), quasi-elastic light scattering and electrophoretic mobility measurements. XRPD and EXAFS results showed that the addition of Tiron(R) up to 20 wt.% to colloidal suspensions does not affect the crystallite size of SnO2 primary particles, determined around 2-3 nm. This value is comparable to the hydrodynamic size measured after redispersion of powder prepared with amount of Tiro(R) higher than 7.5 wt.%, indicating the absence of condensation reactions between primary particles after the initial precipitation step. As a consequence the powder with amount of Tiron(R) > 7.5 wt.%, can be fully redispersed in aqueous solution at pH greater than or equal to I I until a nanoparticle concentration of 6 vol.%. The electrophoresis measurements showed a decrease of the isoelectric point by increasing the amount of grafted Tiron(R) at the SnO2 nanoparticle surface, resulting in negatively charged particle-solution interface in all the studied pH range (2-11). These features govern the gelation process favoring the preparation of crack-free SnO2 supported membranes. The control exercised by Tiron(R) modifying agent in the aggregation process allows the fine-tuning of the porosity, from 0.124 to 0.065 cm(3) g(-1), and mean pore size, from 6.4 to 1.9 nm, as the amount of grafted molecules increases from 0 to 10 wt.%. In consequence, the membrane cut-off determined by filtration of polyethylene glycol standard solutions can be screened from 1500 to 3500 g mol(-1). (C) 2002 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

A structure modeling of two families of sol-gel derived Eu3+-doped organic/inorganic hybrids based on the results of small-angle X-ray scattering experiments is reported. The materials are composed of poly(oxyethylene) chains grafted at one or both ends to siloxane groups and are called mono- and di-urethanesils, respectively. A theoretical function corresponding to a two-level hierarchical structure model fits well the experimental Scattering curves. The first level corresponds to small siloxane clusters embedded in a polymeric matrix. The secondary level is associated to the existence of siloxane cluster rich domains surrounded by a cluster-depleted polymeric matrix. Results show that increasing europium doping favors the growth of the secondary domains. (C) 2002 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

In this paper, we report luminescent and morphological studies with yttrium oxide samples doped with ytterbium and erbium. The samples were prepared by the combustion method and also from different precursors: oxalate, basic carbonate and polymeric resin. All powders were identified Lis being an yttrium oxide with a C-form structure, independent of the employed precursor. From mean crystallite size measurements, it was verified that oxides prepared through the polymeric precursor and combustion methods lead to the smallest crystallite size. Particle shape and size were investigated by SEM and TEM, and showed that both the oxalate precursor and the combustion methods do not provide oxide materials of suitable shape or size, on the other hand. The basic carbonate and polymeric precursors resulted in spherically shaped particles with an average diameter of 90 and 15 run. respectively, Upon 980 run diode laser excitation, green and red emission lines were detected for all samples and were assigned to the H-2(11/2) S-4(3/2) -> I-4(15/2) and (4)Fg(9/2) -> 4I(15/12) transitions, respectively. Such transitions are characteristic for Er3+ and result from energy transfer from Yb3+ energy levels, F-2(7/2) -> F-2(5/2). A relationship between the decrease in the mean crystallite size and the enhancement in red emission was also established as well as the influence of the presence of a high percentage of Yb-3 Both factors promote ET from Yb3+ (F-2(5/2)) to Er3+ (I-4(11/2)). The present study was undertaken to evaluate the protein composition of the sperm membranes (SM) of Nelore bulls, assessing protein markers associated with bull fertility, and whether these markers can be used for predicting bull fertility. Samples were obtained of 20 Nelore bulls, with fertility ranked and divided into three groups (greater, normal and least). To rank the bull's fertility weighted classification was used (according to the number of pregnant cows, number of AI cows and number of herds, considering three different breeding seasons), using the PROC GENMOD as a statistical model, with 99% significance. A total of 7897 Nelore cows, randomly distributed among 28 different farms, were considered in the statistical analyses. The bulls were divided into three fertility groups (pregnancy rates): greater (%F > 80), normal (79 <%F > 71) and least (< 68%F) with 3, 13 and 4 bulls, respectively. Two-dimensional gel electrophoresis (2DE) of sperm membranes indicated in 27 spots (SM40, SM53, SM69, SM93, SM102, SM111, SM137, SM138, SM189, SM196, SM201, SM202, SM204, SM225, SM236, SM237, SM239, SM241, SM246, SM247, SM275, SM283, SM342, SM346, SM355, SM372, SM391) was prevalent in the higher fertility group, and just one spot (SM244) was prevalent in the lower fertility group. Spots SM244 and SM239 had their identification defined by PMF/MALDI-MS, as BSP-A3 and aSFP, respectively. Both these proteins showed a great potential for predicting bull's fertility. The amount of aSFP was 8.5 times greater in the sperm membrane protein profile of the higher fertility groups of Nelore bulls. Besides that, the BSP-A3 was 2.5 times greater in the lower fertility group. For the other spots potentially associated with fertility not yet identified, additional tests will be necessary, but it is clear that the 2D electrophoresis of the sperm membrane can be used for a new approach to predict Nelore bull fertility. During the mitotic and meiotic division in Dermatobia hominis spermatogenesis, the nuclear envelope is fragmented and membranes appear around the spindle. The membranes surrounding the mitotic spindle are formed by two layers of cisterns. The membranes of the meiotic spindle consist in at least 3 or 4 layers of long smooth cisterns which isolate the spindle from the remaining cytoplasm. The presence of this kind of membranes during meiosis seems to be usual in insect male germ cell.
