The effect of oestradiol on the intact and castrated adult gerbil prostate was evaluated by focussing on stromal and epithelial disorders, and hormonal receptor immunoreactivity. The experimental animals were studied by histological, histochemical and immunohistochemical techniques, morphometric-stereological analysis and transmission electron microscopy. Epithelial alterations in the oestradiol-treated animals were frequent, with an increase in epithelial cell height, areas of intense dysplasia and hyperplasia and formation of prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia (PIN). Another aspect that did not depend on the presence of testosterone was the arrangement of the fibrillar and non-fibrillar elements of the extracellular matrix among smooth muscle cells (SMC), suggesting a possible role of these cells in rearrangement and synthesis of these components, after oestrogenic treatment. In the castrated animals, an accumulation of extracellular matrix elements under the epithelium was evident, while in the intact animals the same compounds were dispersed and scarce. In the groups of intact and castrated animals, SMC and fibroblasts exhibited a secretory phenotype, which was accentuated after oestradiol administration. There was an increase of the immunoreactivity to alpha-oestrogen and androgen receptors in hyperplastic areas compared to normal epithelium, revealing the involvement of these steroid receptors in the hyperplasia and PIN development.

The objective of this research was to evaluate average daily gain (ADG), carcass traits, meat tenderness and profitability of keeping cattle fed different oilseeds and vitamin E in feedlot. A total of 40 Red Norte young bulls with initial average body weight of 339±15 kg were utilized. The experimental design was completely randomized in a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement. The experiment lasted 84 days and experimental diets presented soybeans or cottonseeds as lipid sources associated or not to daily supplementation of 2,500 UI vitamin E per animal. The concentrate:roughage ratio was 60:40. Diets had the same amount of nitrogen (13% CP) and ether extract (6.5%). The data were analyzed by means of statistical software SAS 9.1. Neither vitamin supplementation nor lipid source affected ADG. There was no interaction between lipid source and vitamin supplementation for the variables studied. The inclusion of cottonseed reduced the carcass yield. There was no effect of diets on hot and cold carcass weights or prime cuts. The inclusion of cottonseed reduced the backfat thickness. No effect of experimental diets on the rib-eye area was observed. There was no effect of lipid source or vitamin supplementation on meat tenderness, which was affected, however, by ageing time. Diets with soybeans presented higher cost per animal. The utilization of soybean implied reduction of the gross margin (R$ 59.17 and R$ 60.51 for diets based on soy with and without supplemental vitamin, respectively, vs. R$ 176.42 and R$ 131.79 for diets based on cottonseed). The utilization of cottonseed enables improvement of profitability of feedlot fattening, in spite of negatively affecting some carcass characteristics.

To verify the effects of energy supplementation and fat on follicular dynamics, metabolic profile and the production of oocytes, 15 young heifers (Bos taurus indicus) with an average age of 14 months and with an initial weight of 256.35 kg were assigned to two treatments according to weight and follicular population as evaluated by ultrasonography: in T1 (1.0 × M), animals received 100% of the energy requirements for maintenance; in T2 (1.7 × M), animals received 170% of the energy requirements for maintenance, achieved by the addition of 200 g of Megalac®. After a period of adaptation to the diet, the treatments, blood collection and follicular aspirations were started using a randomized design. The dry matter intake and weight gain were lower in the 1.0 × M group than in the 1.7 × M group. No differences were found in the plasma progesterone concentrations, albumin, glucose, urea or gonadotropin (FSH and LH) levels between the groups. The mean concentrations of cholesterol were higher in the 1.7 × M group. The total number of small (<4 mm) and medium follicles (4-8 mm) was not altered by the treatments, but the number of small follicles increased on days 1 and 2 of the estrous cycle, with higher values found in the 1.7 × M group. The average of the oocytes also increased (9.50±2.1 and 12.5±4.4 for the 1.0 × M and 1.7 × M groups, respectively). The rapid increase in the amount of energy offered in the diet changes the amount of follicles and oocytes available for follicular aspiration (OPU) in young heifers without changing their metabolic profile.

Retinoic acid (RA) plays a role in regulating cardiac geometry and function throughout life. The aim of this study was to analyze the cardiac effects of RA in adult rats. Wistar rats were randomly allocated to a control group (n = 18) receiving standard rat chow and a group treated with RA (n = 14) receiving standard rat chow supplemented with RA for 90 days. All animals were evaluated by echocardiography, isolated papillary muscle function, and morphological studies. Whereas the RA-treated group developed an increase in both left ventricular (LV) mass and LV end-diastolic diameter, the ratio of LV wall thickness to LV end-diastolic diameter remained unchanged when compared with the control group. In the isolated papillary muscle preparation, RA treatment decreased the time to peak developed tension and increased the maximum velocity of isometric relengthening, indicating that systolic and diastolic function was improved. Although RA treatment produced an increase in myocyte cross-sectional area, the myocardial collagen volume fraction was similar to controls. Thus our study demonstrates that small physiological doses of RA induce ventricular remodeling resembling compensated volume-overload hypertrophy in rats.

The present study was designed to determine the optimum dietary zinc supplementation to Nile tilapia juveniles (13.3 +/- 1.13 g), by using vegetable-based diets supplemented with increasing levels of zinc from commercial-grade zinc sulfate monohydrate, a previously determined zinc source of higher bioavailability. The basal diet was supplemented with 25, 50, 100, 150, 200, 300, or 400 mg/kg Zn. The experiment was conducted in forty 250-l tanks arranged in a recirculating water system. The experimental period was divided in two phases. For the first 10-week experimental phase, fish were fed satiation diets supplemented with increasing levels of zinc. For the second 5-week experimental phase, fish that were fed diets supplemented with 0-300 mg/kg Zn during the first phase were fed the 400 mg/kg Zn-supplemented diet; fish fed the diet supplemented with 400 mg/kg Zn (first phase) were fed the nonzinc-supplemented diet (second phase). Broken-line analysis showed that the optimum dietary zinc supplementation ((ZnSO4H2O)-H-.) to Nile tilapia juveniles, using weight gain and bone zinc saturation as response criteria, was 44.50 and 79.51 mg/kg Zn, respectively. When challenged by a zinc-deficient diet, tilapia mobilized stored bone zinc to preserve its zinc status. By considering that bone zinc saturation is a more accurate response criterion than weight gain, it was concluded that the optimum dietary zinc supplementation ((ZnSO4H2O)-H-.) in vegetable-based diets to Nile tilapia juveniles is 79.51 mg/kg Zn. Digestibility of diets based on corn and soybean meal or soybeans treated by roasting or extrusion, with or without an enzyme supplementation, was measured by true (Sibbald) methods, by analysis of excreta, and by analysis of ileal digesta. Only analysis of ileal digesta was able to consistently measure differences between soybean and enzyme treatments in the digestibility of CP, starch, fat, and ME. The amino acid (AA) digestibility of the diets was measured by analysis of the ileal contents. Whereas enzyme supplementation improved overall CP digestibility by 2.9%, this improvement was not equal for all AA. of the AA most important for broilers fed corn-soybean diets, the digestibilities of Lys, Met, and Arg were not improved or not improved significantly by the enzyme supplementation; however, that of Val was improved by 2.3% and that of Thr was improved by 3.0%. A performance trial demonstrated that enzyme supplementation with equal diet formulation improved BW and the feed conversion ratio by 1.9 and 2.2%, respectively. A second performance trial compared standard diet formulations with formulations using enzyme supplementation and energy levels that were reduced by the amount of improvement provided by the inclusion of enzyme in the first performance trial. No difference was seen between treatments, showing that the improvement of nutrient utilization brought about by enzyme supplementation completely compensated for the reduced energy content. Whereas enzyme supplementation should allow a reduction in CP formulation as well, individual AA were not improved equally by supplementation and should also be balanced.
