Intense and broad visible photoluminescent (PL) band in structurally disordered SrWO4 compounds was observed at room temperature. The polycrystalline scheelite strontium tungstate (SrWO4) samples prepared by the polymeric precursor method at different temperatures of annealing were structurally characterized by x-ray diffraction and Fourier transform Raman spectroscopy measurements. Quantum-mechanical calculations showed that the local disorder in the cluster of the network modifiers Sr has a very important role in the charge transfer. The experimental and theoretical results are in good agreement, indicating that the generation of the intense visible PL band can be related to short-range order-disorder degree in the scheelite structure. Violet-blue photoluminescence was produced at room temperature in a structurally disordered SrZrO3 perovskite structure with a 350.7 nm excitation line. The intensity of this emission was higher than that of any other perovskites previously studied. The authors discuss the role of structural order-disorder that favors the self-trapping of electrons and charge transference, as well as a model to elucidate the mechanism that triggers photoluminescence. In this model the wide band model, the most important events occur before excitation. (c) 2007 American Institute of Physics.

Disordered and crystalline Mn-doped BaTiO3 (BTO:Mn) powders were synthesized by the polymeric precursor method. After heat treatment, the nature of visible photoluminescence (PL) at room temperature in amorphous BTO:Mn was discussed, considering results of experimental and theoretical studies. X-ray diffraction (XRD), PL, and UV-vis were used to characterize this material. Rietveld refinement of the BTO:Mn from XRD data was used to built two models, which represent the crystalline BTO:Mn (BTO:Mn,) and disordered BTO:Mn (BTO:Mn-d) structures. Theses models were analyzed by the periodic ab initio quantum mechanical calculations using the CRYSTAL98 package within the framework of density functional theory at the B3LYP level. The experimental and theoretical results indicated that PL is related with the degree of disorder in the BTO:Mn powders and also suggests the presence of localized states in the disordered structure. Xylella fastidiosa is a xylem-dwelling, insect-transmitted, gamma-proteobacterium that causes diseases in many plants, including grapevine, citrus, periwinkle, almond, oleander, and coffee. X. fastidiosa has an unusually broad host range, has an extensive geographical distribution throughout the American continent, and induces diverse disease phenotypes. Previous molecular analyses indicated three distinct groups of X.fastidiosa isolates that were expected to be genetically divergent. Here we report the genome sequence of X. fastidiosa (Temecula strain), isolated from a naturally infected grapevine with Pierce's disease (PD) in a wine-grape-growing region of California. Comparative analyses with a previously sequenced X.fastidiosa strain responsible for citrus variegated chlorosis (CVC) revealed that 98% of the PD X.fastidiosa Temecula genes are shared with the CVC X. fastidiosa strain 9a5c genes. Furthermore, the average amino acid identity of the open reading frames in the strains is 95.7%. Genomic differences are limited to phage-associated chromosomal rearrangements and deletions that also account for the strain-specific genes present in each genome. Genomic islands, one in each genome, were identified, and their presence in other X.fastidiosa strains was analyzed. We conclude that these two organisms have identical metabolic functions and are likely to use a common set of genes in plant colonization and pathogenesis, permitting convergence of functional genomic strategies.

in this paper, we derive an explicit expression for the parameter sequences of a chain sequence in terms of the corresponding orthogonal polynomials and their associated polynomials. We use this to study the orthogonal polynomials K-n((lambda.,M,k)) associated with the probability measure dphi(lambda,M,k;x), which is the Gegenbauer measure of parameter lambda + 1 with two additional mass points at +/-k. When k = 1 we obtain information on the polynomials K-n((lambda.,M)) which are the symmetric Koornwinder polynomials. Monotonicity properties of the zeros of K-n((lambda,M,k)) in relation to M and k are also given. (C) 2002 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

A joint experimental and theoretical study has been carried out to rationalize for the first time the photoluminescence (PL) properties of disordered CaWO4 (CWO) thin films. From the experimental side, thin films of CWO have been synthesized following a soft chemical processing, their structure has been confirmed by X-ray diffraction data and corresponding PL properties have been measured using the 488 nm line of an argon ion laser. Although we observe PL at room temperature for the crystalline thin films, the structurally disordered samples present much more intense emission. From the theoretical side, first principles quantum mechanical calculations, based on density functional theory at B3LYP level, have been employed to study the electronic structure of a crystalline (CWO-c) and asymmetric (CWO-a) periodic model. Electronic properties are analyzed in the light of the experimental results and their relevance in relation to the PL behavior of CWO is discussed. The symmetry breaking process on going from CWO-c to CWO-a creates localized electronic levels above the valence band and a negative charge transfer process takes place from threefold, WO3, to fourfold, WO4,. tungsten coordinations. The correlation of both effects seems to be responsible for the PL of amorphous CWO. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We study the phonon density of states of a three dimensional disordered mixed crystal NaCl(x)Br1-x. The phonon structure is obtained by using a cluster method based on a continued fraction expansion of the Green function. The proposed dynamic model includes only short range interactions (first and second neighbors) but supports some qualitative features of the constituents binary alloys.

Intense and broad photoluminescence (PL) emission at room temperature was observed on structurally disordered Ba[Zr0.25Ti0.75]O-3 (BZT) powders synthesized by the polymeric precursor method. BZT powders were annealed at 573 K for different times and at 973 K for 2 h in oxygen atmosphere. The single-phase cubic perovskite structure of the powder annealed at 973 K for 2 It was identified by X-ray diffraction and Fourier transform Raman techniques. PL emission increased with the increase of annealing time, which reached its maximum value in the powder annealed at 573 K for 192 h. First principles quantum mechanical calculations based on density functional theory (B3LYP level) were employed to study the electronic structure of ordered and disordered models. The theoretical calculations and experimental measurements of Ultraviolet-visible absorption spectroscopy indicate that the presence of intermediary energy levels in the band gap is favorable for the intense and broad PL emission at room temperature in disordered BZT powders. The PL behavior is probably due the existence of a charge gradient on the disordered structure, denoted by means of a charge transfer process from [TiO5]-[ZrO6] or [TiO6]-[ZrO5] clusters to [TiO6]-[ZrO6] clusters. Background: The increasing number of genomic sequences of bacteria makes it possible to select unique SNPs of a particular strain/species at the whole genome level and thus design specific primers based on the SNPs. The high similarity of genomic sequences among phylogenetically-related bacteria requires the identification of the few loci in the genome that can serve as unique markers for strain differentiation. PrimerSNP attempts to identify reliable strain-specific markers, on which specific primers are designed for pathogen detection purpose. Results: PrimerSNP is an online tool to design primers based on strain specific SNPs for multiple strains/species of microorganisms at the whole genome level. The allele-specific primers could distinguish query sequences of one strain from other homologous sequences by standard PCR reaction. Additionally, PrimerSNP provides a feature for designing common primers that can amplify all the homologous sequences of multiple strains/species of microorganisms. PrimerSNP is freely available at http://cropdisease.ars.usda.gov/similar to primer. Conclusion: PrimerSNP is a high-throughput specific primer generation tool for the differentiation of phylogenetically-related strains/species. Experimental validation showed that this software had a successful prediction rate of 80.4 - 100% for strain specific primer design.
