In this paper a modified chalcogenide glass was studied by X-ray powder diffraction, differential thermal analysis, infrared and Raman scattering spectroscopies. The study of this new matrix opens new perspectives to fabricate Pr3+-doped fibers to operate as an optical amplifier in the 1.3 mum telecommunications window. The Pr3+-doped 70Ga(2)S(3)-30La(2)S(3) glass was modified through the substitution of La2S3 by La2O3, which improves the thermal stability of these glasses without any modification of phonon energy. The possibility to pull a fiber from this glass system without any devitrification is easily achieved.

MoO3 is a lamellar material with applications in different areas, as solid lubricants, catalysis, solar cells, etc. In the present work, MoO3 powders, synthesized by the polymeric precursor method, were doped with nickel or cobalt. The powder precursors were characterized by TG/DTA. After calcination between 500 and 700 degrees C, the samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, infrared and Raman spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. beta-MoO3 was obtained after calcination at low temperatures. With the temperature increase, alpha-MoO3 is observed, with a preferential growth of the (0 2k 0) planes, when the material is doped and calcined at 700 degrees C. Doping with nickel increases five times the preferential growth. As a consequence, plate-like particles are observed. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The osseointegration of porous titanium implants was evaluated in the present work. Implants were fabricated from ASTM grade 2 titanium by a powder metallurgy method. Part of these implants were submitted to chemical and thermal treatment in order to deposit a biomimetic coating, aiming to evaluate its influence on the osseointegration of the implants. The implants were characterized by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Electron Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy (EDS) and Raman Spectroscopy. Three coated and three control (uncoated) implants were surgically inserted into thirty albino rabbits' left and right tibiae, respectively. Tibiae samples were submitted to histological and histomorphometric analyses, utilizing SEM, optical microscopy and mechanical tests. EDS results indicated calcium (Ca) and phosphorous (P) at the surface and Raman spectra exhibited an intense peak, characteristic of hydroxyapatite (HA). Bone neoformation was detected at the bone-implant interface and inside the pores, including the central ones. The mean bone neoformation percentage in the coated implants was statistically higher at 15 days, compared to 30 and 45 days. The mechanical tests showed that coated implants presented higher resistance to displacement, especially after 30 and 45 days.

Near-infrared Raman spectroscopy (NIRS) is a particularly promising technique that is being used in recent years for many biomedical applications. Optical spectroscopy has gained increasing prominence as a tool for quantitative analysis of biological samples, clinical diagnostic, concentration measurements of blood metabolites and therapeutic drugs, and analysis of the chemical composition of human tissues. Toxoplasmosis is an important zoonosis in public health, and domestic cats are the most important transmitters of the disease. This disease can be detected by several serological tests, which usually have a high cost and require a long time. The goal of this work was to investigate a new method to diagnosis Toxoplasma gondii infections using NIRS. In order to confirm antibody detection, 24 cat blood scrum samples were analyzed by the Raman spectra, from which 23 presented positive serology to toxoplasmosis and one was a reference negative serum. Characteristic Raman peaks allowed differentiation between negative and positive sera, confirming the possibility of antibody detection by Raman spectroscopy. These results give the first evidence that this technique can be useful to quantify antibodies in cat sera.

The vibrational spectra of palladium phthalocyanine (PdPc) evaporated thin solid films are reported, including the resonance Raman scattering, surface-enhanced resonance Raman scattering (SERRS) and SERRS mapping of the film surface using micro-Raman spectroscopy with 633 nm laser radiation. SERRS of PdPc was obtained by evaporating an overlayer of Ag nanoparticles on to the PdPc film on glass. The SERRS enhancement factor is estimated as similar to10(4) with reference to PdPc evaporated films on glass. The molecular organization of the PdPc evaporated films was probed using transmission and reflection-absorption infrared spectra. It was established that a random molecular distribution found in PdPc evaporated films is independent of temperature. No evidence of thermal degradation due to thermal annealing was found in the films. Electronic absorption and emission spectra are also discussed. Copyright (C) 2002 John Wiley Sons, Ltd.

Lead molybdate (PbMoO4) crystals were synthesized by the co-precipitation method at room temperature and then processed in a conventional hydrothermal (CH) system at low temperature (70 °C for different times). These crystals were structurally characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Rietveld refinement, micro-Raman (MR) and Fourier transformed infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopies. Field emission scanning electron microscopy images were employed to observe the shape and monitor the crystal growth process. The optical properties were investigated by ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) absorption and photoluminescence (PL) measurements. XRD patterns and MR spectra indicate that these crystals have a scheelite-type tetragonal structure. Rietveld refinement data possibilities the evaluation of distortions in the tetrahedral [MoO 4] clusters. MR and FT-IR spectra exhibited a high mode ν1(Ag) ascribed to symmetric stretching vibrations as well as a large absorption band with two modes ν3(Eu and Au) related to anti-symmetric stretching vibrations in [MoO 4] clusters. Growth mechanisms were proposed to explain the stages involved for the formation of octahedron-like PbMoO4 crystals. UV-Vis absorption spectra indicate a reduction in optical band gap with an increase in the CH processing time. PL properties of PbMoO4 crystals have been elucidated using a model based on distortions of tetrahedral [MoO4] clusters due to medium-range intrinsic defects and intermediary energy levels (deep and shallow holes) within the band gap. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd. Raman spectroscopy and Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) studies were performed on a series of V(2)O(5)/TiO(2) catalysts prepared by a modified sol-gel method in order to identify the vanadium species. Two species of surface vanadium were identified by Raman measurements, monomeric vanadyls and polymeric vanadates. Monomeric vanadyls are characterized by a narrow Raman band at 1030 cm(-1) and polymeric vanadates by two broad bands in the region from 900 to 960 cm(-1) and 770 to 850 cm(-1). The Raman spectra do not exhibit characteristic peaks of crystalline V(2)O(5). These results are in agreement with those of X-ray Diffractometry (XRD) and Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) previously reported (C.B. Rodella et al., J. Sol-Gel Sci. Techn., submitted). At least three families of V(4+) ions were identified by EPR investigations. The analysis of the EPR spectra suggests that isolated V(4+) ions are located in sites with octahedral symmetry substituting for Ti(4+) ions in the rutile structure. Magnetically interacting V(4+) ions are also present as pairs or clusters giving rise to a broad and structureless EPR line. At higher concentration of V(2)O(5), a partial oxidation of V(4+) to V(5+) is apparent from the EPR results.

Rhodium phthalocyanine (RhPc) was synthesized and ultra thin Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films of RhPc were successfully fabricated. The LB film characterization was carried out using both UV-vis absorption spectra and Raman scattering. The Raman spectroscopy was carried out using 633 and 780 nm laser lines. LB films were deposited onto Ag nanoparticles to achieve the surface-enhanced pre-resonance Raman scattering (pre-SERRS) and surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) for both laser lines, respectively, which allowed the characterization of the RhPc ultra thin films. The morphology of the LB RhPc neat film is extracted from micro-Raman imaging. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
