We develop a systematic scheme to treat binary collisions between ultracold atoms in the presence of a strong laser field, tuned to the red of the trapping transition. We assume that the Rabi frequency is much less than the spacing between adjacent bound-state resonances, In this approach we neglect fine and hyperfine structures, but consider fully the three-dimensional aspects of the scattering process, up to the partial d wave. We apply the scheme to calculate the S matrix elements up to the second order in the ratio between the Rabi frequency and the laser detuning, We also obtain, fur this simplified multichannel model, the asymmetric line shapes of photoassociation spectroscopy, and the modification of the scattering length due to the light field at low, but finite, entrance kinetic energy. We emphasize that the present calculations can be generalized to treat more realistic models, and suggest how to carry out a thorough numerical comparison to this semianalytic theory. The dispersion patterns of the larval planidia of Ormia depleta was studied in circular arenas. After placing 25 larvae in the center of the arena, their angle of distribution and distance travelled was recorded 15 min later. No innate directional orientations were evidenced, nor was evidence found for either positive or negative orientation to point sound and light sources. In all cases, dispersion was bimodal, with most dispersing only 1 cm, and a much smaller peak found at 10 cm. The bimodality of dispersal distances may be a response to the sexual behavior of its host, mole crickets of the genus Scapteriscus.

A taxonomic revision of the family Compsopogonaceae in Brazil was carried out, resulting in the recognition of a single genus (Compsopogon) with two species (C. coeruleus and C. leptoclados). For both species the following information was provided: a) nomenclatural type; b) type locality; c) description (with illustrations); d) diagnostic features; e) world distribution; f) distribution in Brazil (with map); g) habitat, associated species and seasonality; h) remarks, including discussion of taxonomic and/or nomenclatural problems and comparison with previous reports based on Brazilian and foreign material. Currently accepted diagnostic criteria for genera and species within Compsopogonaceae are critically analysed. The circumscription of Compsopogon and Compsopogonopsis are evaluated and the single genus Compsopogon is recognized in the family.

Transplants of incipient colonies of the fire ant, Solenopsis invicta into areas in which mature colonies had been eliminated did not result in higher rates of success than in areas in which mature colonies were present. However for both types of sites, Pogonomyrmex (Ephebomyrmex) nagelli colonies were found in cleared sites used for transplants, with the number of translocated P. nagelli nests higher in areas which had not been treated with Mirex for S. invicta colony reduction. These results suggest that small colonies may be displaced by larger colonies of other species.

The crystal structure of benzoyl-histidine monohydrate (BYLH hereafter), C-13H-12N-3O-3. H2O was determined from three dimensional data of 3012 independent reflections measured on a Enraf-Nonius (CAD4) single crystal diffractometer. The compound crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group P2(1)2(1)2(1) with cell dimensions alpha = 7.102(1) angstrom, b = 13.783(3) angstrom, c = 14.160(4) angstrom, V = 1385.92 angstrom-3, F.W. = 277.28, F(000) = 584 Q(calc) = 1.32 g cm-3 and Z = 4.The structure was solved with direct methods. All positional and anisotropic thermal parameters were refined by full-matrix least-squares calculations. The final reliability factor was R = 0.040, while the weighted one was Rw = 0.034. The H atoms found in the difference Fourier map were refined isotropically. The compound consists of a histidine molecule bound to a benzoyl group. There is also a cocrystallized water molecule stabilized through a hydrogen bridge. The 5-membered ring of the histidine has its tautomeric form, after the transfer of the H atom from the N(delta) to the N(epsilon) atom of the ring. There is an sp2 conformation around C6 while the conformation around C3 is that of sp3. The histidine ring forms with the benzene ring a dihedral angle of 109.8(1)-degree.All angle values and bond distances agree very well with the expected values in the literature.

Horizontal and vertical frequency distribution of larvae in three species of Calliphoridae were studied. Correlation between horizontal and vertical dispersion and larval size was also assessed. The experiment was monitored depositing vials with larvae at one end of a cardboard box covered with wood shavings. Chrysomya megacephala and C., putoria reached 2.9 m from the starting portion of the box. Co. macellaria reached only 2.0 m from the starting portion of the box. The majority of pupae of the three species were found at 4 and 5 cm depth from the surface of the box. Correlation coefficients between pupal size and horizontal and vertical migration were usually very low, and apparently no clear pattern emerges from this data set. This study revealed variation in the dispersion patterns although the two Chrysomya species are more similar in their postfeeding larval behaviour compared to Co. macellaria.

The taxonomy, distribution and ecology of Section Sirodotia of Batrachospermum in Brazil is studied. Only one species, B. delicatulum (SKUJA) NECCHI & ENTWISLE, was recognized. This species presents a wide range of morphological features, occurs in a number of distinct habitats and environmental conditions and is widely distributed in Brazil. A full account of the species taxonomy is given and the synonyMy of B. ateleium comb. nov. SKUJA is confirmed. Two growth forms (dense and open) were found in the Brazilian specimens, but they were not treated as different taxa because a continuous range was observed between them. Two morphological features were proposed for species delineation: early development of gonimoblast and presence of specialized spermatangial branches. Three distinct groups of Sirodotia species can be recognized on the basis of these criterions: B. delicatulum (gonimoblast initial arises from a semiglobular protuberance of the carpogonium), B. suecicalum KYLIN (gonimoblast initial arises from the non-protuberant side of the carpogonium) and B. segawae KUMANO and B. yutakae KUMANO (with specialized spermatangial branches).

As revealed by the NADH-diaphorase and myosine ATPase, the M. extensor carpi radialis longus of the rat possesses at least 3 main kinds of fibres, with different distribution on the superficial and deep portions of the muscle. The superficial portion revealed that 67.68 % are FG (fast-twitch-glycolytic) fibres, 14.72 % are FOG (fast-twitch-oxidative) fibres and 17.60 % are SO (slow-twitch-glycolytic) fibres. Already the deep portion revealed that 71.29 % are SO (slow-twitch-glycolytic) fibres, 17.46 % are FOG (fast-twitch-oxidative-glycolytic) fibres and 11.25 % are FG (fast-twitch-glycolytic) fibres. The miosine ATPase reaction was used to demonstrate contracting characteristics. These findings suggest that the movements of fast contraction of the M. extensor carpi radialis longus are predominant.

The combined CERN and Brookhaven heavy ion (H.I.) data supports a scenario of hadron gas which is in chemical and thermal equilibrium at a temperature T of about 140 MeV. Using the Brown-Stachel-Welke model (which gives 150 MeV) we show that in this scenario, the hot nucleons have mass 3 pi T and the pi and rho mesons have masses close to pi T and 2 pi T, respectively. A simple model with pions and quarks supports the co-existence of two phases in these heavy ion experiments, suggesting a second order phase transition. The masses of the pion, rho and the nucleon are intriguingly close to the lattice screening masses.

Multivariate morphometrics and image analysis were used to determine the number of well-distinguished infrageneric taxa of reddish freshwater Audouinella in North America. Three distinct groupings were differentiated from 83 populations collected from Alaska and Labrador in the north to central Mexico and Jamaica in the south. These groupings were statistically related to seven type specimens. The following species were recognized: A. eugenea (SKUJA) JAO, A. hermannii (ROTH) DUBY [syn.: A. violacea (KUTZ.) HAMEL and its varieties, alpina (KUTZ.) RAB., dalmatica (KUTZ.) RAB., expansa (WOOD) SMITH, and hercynica (KUTZ.) KUTZ.] and A. tenella (SKUJA) PAPENFUSS. These species are separated based on dimensions of vegetative cells and monosporangia. A. tenella is found only in California, A. eugenea in warm, alkaline and high-ion waters of the tropical rainforest and desert-chaparral, while A. hermannii occurs widely from the boreal to south temperate and in waters with relatively low temperatures and ion content.
