Synthesis, characterization and thermal decomposition of bivalent transition metal α-hydroxyisobutyrates, M(C4H7O 3)2·nH2O (M = Mn(II), Fe(II), Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), Zn(II)), as well as the thermal behaviour of α-hydroxyisobutyric acid and its sodium salt were investigated employing simultaneous thermogravimetry and differential scanning calorimetry (TG-DSC), infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), TG-DSC coupled to FTIR, elemental analysis and complexometry. All the compounds were obtained as dihydrated, except the copper one which was obtained in the anhydrous state. The thermal decomposition of the anhydrous compounds occurs in a single or two steps and the final residue up to 235 C (Mn), 300 C (Fe), 305 C (Co), 490 C (Ni), 260 C (Cu) and 430 C (Zn) is Mn2O3, Fe2O3, Co3O 4, NiO, CuO and ZnO, respectively. The results also provided information concerning the ligand's denticity and identification of the gaseous products evolved during the thermal decomposition of these compounds. Objective. The objective of this study was to evaluate the penetration of 2.5% NaOCl associated with 17.0% EDTA, 1.0% citric acid, and 1.0% peracetic acid into dentin tubules.Study design. The roots of 44 bovine incisors were cross-sectioned and 5-mm-long fragments were produced from their middle thirds. The specimens were instrumented with ProTaper hand files, stained in crystal violet, then sectioned mesiodistally. The buccal fragments were divided into 4 groups (n = 9) and subjected to 2 consecutive 10-minute immersion periods in one of the following acid solutions combined with 2.5% NaOCl: 17.0% EDTA (group 1), 1.0% citric acid (group 2), and 1.0% peracetic acid (group 3). Nine fragments were immersed in 2.5% NaOCl (group 4). The analysis of the penetration of NaOCl solutions into dentin was performed by measuring the depth of crystal violet stain that was bleached using a steromicroscope under x50 magnification. Statistical comparisons were carried out by Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn's tests at the 5% significance level.Results. Group 1 showed less penetration into dentin than group 4 (P < .05). No statistically significant differences were observed among groups 2, 3, and 4 (P > .05).Conclusions. Association of NaOCl with acid solutions did not increase its penetration depth into root dentin. (Oral Surg Oral Med Oral Pathol Oral Radiol Endod 2011;112:e155-e159)

There are many advantages to using a microwave as a source of heat in hydrothermal reactions. Because it is a quick and homogeneous way to crystallize ceramic powders, it was used in this work for the production of antiferroelectric sodium mobate (NaNbO3) in a cubic-like form and its intermediary phase, disodium diniobate hydrate (Na2Nb2O6 center dot H2O), with a fiber morphology. The syntheses were carried out by treating niobic acid (Nb2O5 center dot nH(2)O) with NaOH. By changing the reaction time and the concentration of the reactants, particles with different structures and different morphologies could be obtained. The structural evolution of the products of this reaction was elucidated on the basis of the arrangement of the NbO6 octahedral units. Conclusive results were obtained with morphological and structural characterizations through XRD, TEM, MEV, and NMR and Raman spectroscopy. ((C) Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. The study of the H+ concentration at the micellar interface is a convenient system for modeling the distribution of H+ at interfaces. We have synthesized salicylic acid derivatives to analyze the proton dissociation of both the carboxylic and phenol groups of' the probes, determining spectrophotometrically the apparent pK(a)'s (pK(ap)) in sodium dodecyl Sulfate, SDS, micelles with and without added salt. The synthesized probes were 2-hydroxy-5-(2-trimethylammoniumacetyl)benzoate; 2-hydroxy-5-(2-dimethylhexadecylammoniumacetyl)benzoate- 2-hydroxy-5-(2-dimethylhexadecylammoniumhexanoyl)benzoate-, 2-hydroxy-5-(2-diniethylhexadecylammoniumundecanoyl)betizoate; 2-hydroxy-5-acetylbenzoic acids and 2-hydroxy-5-dodecanoylbenzoic acid. Upon incorporation into SDS micelles the pK(ap)'s of both carboxylic and phenol groups increased by ca. 3 pH units and NaCl addition caused a decrease in the probe-incorporated pKap. The experimental results were fitted with a cell model Poisson-Boltzmann (P-B) equation taking in consideration the effect of salt on the aggregation number of SDS and using the distance of' the dissociating group as a parameter. The conformations of the probes were analyzed theoretically using two dielectric constants, e.g., 2 and 78. Both the P-B analysis and conformation calculations can be interpreted by assuming that the acid groups dissociate very close to, or at, the interface. Our results are consistent with the assumption that the intrinsic pK(a)'s of both carboxylic and phenol groups of the salicylic acid probes used here can be taken as those in water. Using this assumption the micellar and salt effects on the pKap's of the (trialkylammonium)benzoate probes were described accurately using a cell model P-B analysis. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. Objectives: Iron ions (Fe2+) have been shown to be cariostatic in many studies particularly by their ability to reduce bacterial metabolism. Nevertheless, the role of iron ions on dissolution of enamel is unexplored. The aim of the present study was therefore to investigate the protective effect of increasing concentrations (0-120 mmol/L) of Fe2+ on the dissolution of enamel.Design: Enamel powder was subjected to acetic acid made with increasing concentrations with respect to FeSO4 center dot 7H(2)O. In order to determine the amount of enamel dissolved, the phosphate released in the medium was analysed spectrophotometrically using the Fiske-Subarrow method. Data were tested using Kruskall-Wall and Dunn's tests (p < 0.05). The degree of protection was found to approach maximum at about 15 mmol/L Fe2+. Higher concentrations of Fe2+ did not have an extra effect on inhibition of dissolution of enamel powder. In the next step, the protective effect of 15 mmol/L Fe2+ against mineral dissolution of the bovine enamel was evaluated using a simple abiotic model system. Enamel blocks were exposed to a sequence of seven plastic vials, each containing 1 mL of 10 mmol/L acetic acid. The acid in vial 4 was made 15 mmol/L with respect to FeSO4 center dot 7H(2)O. The mineral dissolved during each challenge was thus determined by phosphate released as described above. Data were tested using two-way ANOVA (p < 0.05). Results: Lower demineralisation (around 45%) was found in vial 4 (with Fe) that continued stable until vial 7.Conclusions: Thus, our data suggest that Fe2+, can be effective on inhibition of dissolution of enamel and that this effect may be durable. Noncrystalline silica was obtained with low iron, sodium, and nitrate ions concentrations from soluble sodium silicate (water glass) and nitric acid solution. Extractions with nitric acid solution and/or deionized water and/or dialysis were carried out to eliminate soluble metal ions. Products were dried in a microwave oven and characterized by chemical analysis, XRD, and IR. Dialysis seems to be the best treatment for the elimination of sodium and nitrate ions. Silica purified by nitric acid and water extractions followed by dialysis yields the purest silica sample.

The interaction between sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS) and acrylic acid (AA)-ethyl methacrylate (EMA) copolymers has been investigated using steady state fluorescence and conductimetric measurements to assess the effect of the polymer composition on the aggregation process. Micropolarity studies using the ratio between the emission intensities of the vibronic bands of pyrene (I-1/I-3) and the shift of the fluorescence emission of pyrene-3-carboxaldehyde show, that the interaction of SDS with AA-EMA copolymers occurs at surfactant concentrations smaller than that observed for the pure surfactant in water and depends on the copolymer composition. The increase of ethyl methacrylate in the copolymers lowers the critical aggregation concentration (CAC) due to the larger hydrophobic character of the polymer backbone. The formation of aggregates on the macromolecule is induced mainly, by hydrophobic interactions, but the process is also influenced by the ionic strength due to the counter-ions of the polyelectrolyte.

In this work we investigate the effect of hydrochloric acid (HC) addition on the structure and thermal and magnetic properties of iron-doped siloxane-polyoxyethylene (POE) hybrids prepared by the sol-gel route. X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) results reveal the dominance of ferrihydrite nanoparticles and a mixture of this phase with FeCl4- species in the hybrid prepared without and with HCl, respectively. Thermal analysis reveals the existence of two crystalline polymeric phases in the hybrid prepared with HCl whereas hybrids prepared without HCl are amorphous. The 105 and 60 Angstrom sized ferrihydrite nanoparticles were detected by SAXS analysis of the composite prepared without and with HCl, respectively. The magnetic results suggest that in both samples antiferromagnetic nanoparticles coexist with small clusters/isolated ions. In the sample without HCl addition, larger particles dominate the magnetic behavior, while the opposite occurs for the sample prepared using HCl catalyst. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Synthesis, characterization, and thermal behavior of transition metal oxamates, M(NH(2)C(2)O(3))(2)center dot nH(2)O (M = Mn(II), Fe(II), Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), Zn(II)), as well as the thermal behavior of oxamic acid and its sodium salt (NaNH(2)C(2)O(3)) were investigated employing simultaneous thermogravimetry and differential scanning calorimetry (TG-DSC), experimental and theoretical infrared spectroscopy, TG-DSC coupled to FTIR, elemental analysis and complexometry. The results led to information about the composition, dehydration, thermal stability, thermal decomposition, as well as of the gaseous products evolved during the thermal decomposition of these compounds in dynamic air and N(2) atmospheres.
