Boehmite (gamma-AlOOH) synthesis have been investigated using a spray pyrolysis (SP) device starting from a stable sol of Al-tri-sec-butoxide peptized by nitric acid. Free spherical particles from 100 to 500 nm have been elaborated. Particles sub-structure is made of nano-crystalline boehmite with very small average crystallite size (one crystal cell along the b axis). The nano-crystalline boehmite synthesized by SP at low temperature (200 degrees C) is spontaneously dispersible in water without any surface treatment. Boehmite powder may be transformed to transition gamma-alumina by heat post-treatment. Powders of sub-micrometric and spherical gamma-alumina particles may also be synthesized by SP at 700 degrees C. The spray-pyrolysis (SP) synthesis technique has been employed to obtain SiO2:Eu3+ and gamma-AlOOH:Eu3+, It was possible to obtain sub-micrometric spherical particles of SiO2 with luminescent Eu3+ ions bonded to the silica surface or embedded in amorphous silica beads, by controlling the synthesis and annealing process. Boehmite y-AlOOH doped with Eu3+ nanoparticles were synthesized by SP at moderate temperature (200 degrees C) with Eu3+ ions bonded to the surface hydroxyls of the boehmite nanocrystals. Luminescent nanocomposites were obtained by controlled reaction of gamma-AlOOH:Eu3+ nanocrystals with ASN (asparagine). In these nano-composites, the Eu3+ are held at the surface of the boehmite nanocrystals and partially shielded from interactions with additional luminescence quenchers (hydroxyl groups, water molecules). The purpose of this study was to compare the enamel/resin/metal bond tensile strength by using human canines, in which castings were bonded. These castings were obtained by Co-Cr or Ni-Cr alloys and showed four types of mechanisms of retention: 50 micrograms aluminum oxide abrasive, electrochemical etch, acrylic beads metal mesh. The castings were bonded utilizing Comspan Opaque and Panavia Ex. The specimens were subjected to tensile forces after 24 hours in an Instron machine. The castings subjected to 50 micrograms aluminum oxide abrasive and bonded utilizing Panavia EX showed the biggest bond tensile strength.

In the present work, nano-sized magnetic nuclei of Co have been electrodeposited onto p-Si (111). The deposition follows a mechanism of progressive nucleation and growth controlled by diffusion. MFM studies showed that the transition between magnetic domain states is strongly dependent on the size and shape of the nuclei. A critical height h0 is defined below which the nuclei presented always a single-domain configuration. The limiting lower boundary for the single-domain state calculated from the theory is quantitatively coincident with the experimental results. © 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Objective: To assess the effect of bleaching agents on the microhardness of nanoparticle resin composite. Methods: Twenty-eight cylindrical test specimens (8× 1mm) of Filtek™ Supreme XT resin (3M/ESPE) were prepared and divided into 5 groups. The initial Vickers microhardness was measured (load of 50 grams force for 30 seconds) on the top surface of the test specimens. The groups were treated and divided as follows: G1 - artificial saliva (21 days - control); G2 - 7% hydrogen peroxide gel applied for 4h/day, for 14 days; G3 - 10% carbamide peroxide for 4h/day, for 14 days: G4 - 35% hydrogen peroxide gel applied in three sessions of 30 minutes each, with an interval of one week (21 days) between the sessions; G5 - 35% carbamide peroxide, three sessions of 30 minutes each, with an interval of one week (21 days) between the sessions. The top surfaces of the test specimens received treatment and were submitted to the Vickers microhardness test. Results: The results obtained were submitted to the Analysis of Variance at a fixed criterion, at a level of significance of p=0.05. No significant differences were observed among the treatments tested (p=0.42) when compared with G1. Significant differences (Tukey test) were found when the initial microhardness values were compared with the values after experimental treatments (p<0.01). Conclusion: The application of bleaching agents did not alter the microhardness of resin composites. Therefore, there is no need to change restorations after bleaching.

Objective: To study the influence of color opacity and light-curing systems (halogen light vs blue LED) on the microhardness of a composite resin. Methods: Esthet-X composite resin (Dentsply), shades A2 and A2-O, was inserted in a stainless steel matrix (5 mm diameter and 2 mm deep) and was light cured for 40 seconds with a halogen light source (XL 3000; 3M/ESPE) or a blue LED (Optilight LD II; Gnatus). Eight groups of 15 specimens each were formed, and were further divided according to the light-curing systems, the exposed area (base and surface), and the opacity of the composite resin, producing 120 specimens. The specimens were next stored in distilled water for 24 hours, embedded in a chemically activated acrylic resin, then subjected to finishing and polishing with sandpaper and felt discs. Microhardness was measured with a Vickers Digital Microhardness meter, with a 50 g load for 30 seconds. The obtained microhardness means were analyzed by ANOVA and Tukey's multiple-comparison test at 5% significance level. Results: The surface microhardness was always greater than the base microhardness, regardless of the light-curing source. The halogen light lamp produced significantly higher composite resin microhardness means than the blue LED (57.61 vs. 42.53 HV) (p<0.05). Statistically significant differences (p<0.05) were obtained between the microhardness means for the different composite opacities; lowest microhardness in depth was produced by the A2-O shade. Conclusion: Composite resin opacity as well as the light-curing system influenced the microhardness of the material.

The region of Alfenas, in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, is predominantly constituted of Pre-Cambrian rocks with well developed alteration profiles in association with colluvial and alluvial sediments. No study to date has examined in detail its potential use in the ceramic industry. The scarce knowledge of its mineralogical and technological properties limits its value and consequently its industrial use. Until now, these clay materials have been used in a rudimental manner, in small scale in the fabrication of red tiles. The present study aimed at analyzing these clays mineralogically (X-ray diffraction), chemically (major and minor elements by X-ray fluorescence and organic carbon analysis) and technologically (pressing granulometric distribution; mechanical resistence; water absorption, apparent porosity; linear firing shrinkage; color of firing and others) in order to better understand the raw material and develop adequate technological applications. The best results of ceramic properties were the samples with higher organic content (more plastic clays) and higher values of Al2O3 (kaolinite and gibbsite) and Fe2O3 as well lower SiO2 content and finer grain size which contribute to a better sinterization.

Objective: To evaluate the influence of different air abrasion protocols on the surface roughness of an yttria-stabilized polycrystalline tetragonal zirconia) (Y-TZP) ceramic, as well as the surface topography of the ceramic after the treatment. Method: Fifty-four specimens (7.5×4×7.5mm) obtained from two ceramic blocks (LAVA, 3M ESPE) were flattened with fine-grit sandpaper and subjected to sintering in the ceramic system's specific firing oven. Next, the specimens were embedded in acrylic resin and the surfaces to be treated were polished in a polishing machine using sandpapers of decreasing abrasion (600- to 1,200-grit) followed by felt discs with 10μm and 3μm polishing pastes and colloidal silica. The specimens were then randomly assigned to 9 groups, according to factors particle and pressure(n=6): Gr1- control; Gr2- Al 2O 3(50μm)/2.5 bar; Gr3- Al 2O 3(110μm)/2.5 bar; Gr4- SiO 2(30μm)/2.5 bar; Gr5- SiO 2(30μm)/2.5 bar; Gr6- Al 2O 3(50μm)/3.5 bar; Gr7- Al2O3(110μm)/3.5 bar; Gr8- SiO 2(30μm)/3.5 bar; Gr9- SiO 2(30μm)/3.5 bar. After treatments, surface roughness was analyzed by a digital optical profilometer and the morphology was examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Data (μm) were subjected to statistical analysis by Dunnett's test (5%), two-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (5%). Results: The type of particle (p=0.0001) and the pressure (p=0.0001) used in the air abrasion protocols influenced the surface roughness values among the experimental groups (ANOVA). The mean surface roughness values (μm) obtained for the experimental groups (Gr2 to Gr9) were, respectively: 0.37 D; 0.56 BC; 0.46 BC; 0.48 CD; 0.59 BC; 0.82 A; 0.53B CD; 0.67 AB. The SEM analysis revealed that Al 2O 3, regardless of the particle size and pressure used, caused damage to the surface of the specimens, as it produced superficial damages on the ceramic, in the form of grooves and cracks. Conclusion: Al2O3 (110 μm/3.5 bar) air abrasion promoted the highest surface roughness on the ceramics, but it does not mean that this protocol promotes better ceramic-cement union compared to the other air abrasion protocols.

This research aimed to test particleboard with leucena (Leucaena leucocephala) wood particles and polyurethane resin castor oil based. The response variables are: modulus of rupture (MOR), internal adhesion (AI), apparent density (dap) and wood moisture content (um). The experiments were developed based on the methodological procedures of the ABNT NBR 14810:2002 standard. The particleboards were manufactured by hot-pressing at 4MPa and 90°C, using timber particles with 5% of moisture content and 10% of monocomponent and bicomponent polyurethane resin. The higher moisture content was achieved when the monocomponent polyurethane resin was used. The bicomponent polyurethane resin provided a percent increase of 43.7% and 22.7% on the modulus of rupture and apparent density, respectively, when compared to the standard limit. The internal adhesion of the panels manufactured with monocomponent resin was 2.45 times higher than the standard limit. The confidence interval between means revealed that the internal adhesion and apparent density exhibited statistical equivalence. A good correlation between the internal adhesion and apparent density was found, for this reason it was possible to estimate the internal adhesion of the panels based on the apparent density data.

Biodegradable nanoparticles have been widely explored as carriers for controlled delivery of therapeutic molecules; however, studies describing the development of nanoparticles as carriers for biopesticide products are few. In this work, a new method to prepare nanoparticles loaded with neem (Azadirachta indica) extracts is presented. In this study, nanoparticles were formulated as colloidal suspension and (spray-dried) powder and characterized by evaluating pH, particle size, zeta potential, morphology, absolute recovery, and entrapment efficiency. A high-performance liquid chromatography method was used for nanoparticle characterization. The best formulations presented absolute recovery and entrapment efficiencies of approximately 100% and a release profile based on swelling and relaxation of the polymer or polymer erosion. The biological data of the formulated products against Plutella xylostella showed 100% larval mortality. The nanoparticle information improved the stability of neem products against ultraviolet radiation and increased their dispersion in the aqueous phase. © 2013 American Chemical Society.

The ecotoxicology of nano-TiO2 has been extensively studied in recent years; however, few toxicological investigations have considered the photocatalytic properties of the substance, which can increase its toxicity to aquatic biota. The aim of this work was to evaluate the effects on fish exposed to different nano-TiO2 concentrations and illumination conditions. The interaction of these variables was investigated by observing the survival of the organisms, together with biomarkers of biochemical and genetic alterations. Fish (Piaractus mesopotamicus) were exposed for 96h to 0, 1, 10, and 100mg/L of nano-TiO2, under visible light, and visible light with ultraviolet (UV) light (22.47J/cm2/h). The following biomarkers of oxidative stress were monitored in the liver: concentrations of lipid hydroperoxide and carbonylated protein, and specific activities of superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione S-transferase. Other biomarkers of physiological function were also studied: the specific activities of acid phosphatase and Na,K-ATPase were analyzed in the liver and brain, respectively, and the concentration of metallothionein was measured in the gills. In addition, micronucleus and comet assays were performed with blood as genotoxic biomarkers. Nano-TiO2 caused no mortality under any of the conditions tested, but induced sublethal effects that were influenced by illumination condition. Under both illumination conditions tested, exposure to 100mg/L showed an inhibition of acid phosphatase activity. Under visible light, there was an increase in metallothionein level in fish exposed to 1mg/L of nano-TiO2. Under UV light, protein carbonylation was reduced in groups exposed to 1 and 10mg/L, while nucleus alterations in erythrocytes were higher in fish exposed to 10mg/L. As well as improving the understanding of nano-TiO2 toxicity, the findings demonstrated the importance of considering the experimental conditions in nanoecotoxicological tests. This work provides information for the development of protocols to study substances whose toxicity is affected by illumination conditions. © 2013 Elsevier B.V..
