We discuss the Dirac method analysis of two-dimensional induced gravity, coupled to bosonic matter fields, in reduced phase-space. After defining the extended Hamiltonian it is possible to fix the gauge completely. The Dirac brackets can all be obtained in closed form; nevertheless, the results are not particularly simple.

Changes in Ca-45 uptake and insulin secretion in response to glucose, leucine, and arginine were measured in isolated islets derived from 4-week-old rats born of mothers maintained with normal protein (NP, 17%) or low protein (LP, 6%) diet during pregnancy and lactation. Glucose provoked a dose-dependent stimulation of insulin secretion in both groups of islets, with basal (2.8 mmol/L glucose) and maximal release (27.7 mmol/L glucose) significantly reduced in LP compared with NP islets. In the LP group the concentration-response curve to glucose was shifted to the right compared with the NP group, with the half-maximal response occurring at 16.9 and 13.3 mmol/L glucose, respectively. In LP islets, glucose-induced first and second phases of insulin secretions were drastically reduced. In addition, insulin response to individual amino acids, or in association with glucose, was also significantly reduced in the LP group compared with NP islets. Finally, in LP islets the Ca-45 uptake after 5 minutes or 90 minutes of incubation (which reflect mainly the entry and retention, respectively, of Ca2+), was lower than in NP islets. These data indicate that in malnourished rats both initial and sustained phases of insulin secretion in response to glucose were reduced. This poor secretory response to nutrients seems to be the consequence of an altered Ca2+ handling by malnourished islet cells. (J. Nutr. Biochem. 10:37-43, 1999) (C) Elsevier B.V. 1999. We describe a numerical procedure for plotting the force-versus-time curves in elastic collisions between identical conducting balls. A system of parametric equations relating the force and the time to a dimensionless parameter is derived from the assumption of a force compatible with Hertz's theory of collision. A simple experimental arrangement consisting of a mechanical system of colliding balls and an electrical circuit containing a crystal oscillator and an electronic counter is used to measure the collision time as a function of the energy of impact. From the data we can determine the relevant parameters. The calculated results agree very well with the expected values and are consistent with the assumption that the collisions are elastic. We evaluated the potency of isoproterenol, carbachol, pilocarpine and calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) in the rat right atria at 30, 60 and 90 days after neonatal capsaicin treatment. Neonatal rats were pretreated on the second day of life with capsaicin (50 mg/kg). The capsaicin pretreatment caused a five-fold rightward shift at the pEC(50) level on the concentration-response curves to isoproterenol in 30-day-old rats. Propranolol (10 mg/kg, given 15 min prior to capsaicin treatment) prevented this subsensitivity. No changes in the potency of isoproterenol were observed at 60 and 90 days after capsaicin pretreatment. The potency and maximal responses of CGRP in the right atria in 30-day-old rats were significantly higher than in 60- and 90-day-old rats; however, no differences were found between control and capsaicin groups. The potency and maximal responses to carbachol and pilocarpine were not changed in all groups. The neonatal capsaicin treatment reduced by about 74% the CGRP content in the heart in all groups. In summary, capsaicin treatment in newborn rats produces a desensitization of chronotropic response mediated by beta-adrenoceptors in isolated right atria from 30-day-old rats possibly due to a massive release of catecholamines. The influence of sample preparation strategy of vegetables on the electrothermal behaviour of Se without and with chemical modifiers such as Pd(NO3)(2), Pd(NO3)(2) + Mg(NO3)(2), Pd(NO3)(2) + Cd(NO3)(2), pre-reduced Pd, Mg(NO3)(2), and Ni(NO3)(2) was investigated. Acid digestates and slurries of vegetables (0.1% m/v in 1% m/v HNO3 + 0.005% v/v of Triton X-100) were used to prepare reference solutions or slurries. For 10 mul of each modifier tested, pyrolysis and atomization temperatures were evaluated using pyrolysis and atomization curves, respectively. Best conditions, such as thermal stability, signal profile, repeatability and sensitivity were attained using Pd(NO3)(2) as chemical modifier. The following heating program (temperature, ramp/hold time) of the graphite tube of the Varian SpectrAA-800Z atomic absorption spectrometer was used: dry step (85 degreesC, 5/0 s; 95 degreesC, 40/0 s; 120 degreesC, 10/.5 s); pyrolysis step (1400 degreesC, 10/3s); atomization step (2200 degreesC, 1/2 s); clean step (2600 degreesC, 2/0 s). This pyrolysis temperature is 800 degreesC higher than when measuring without any modifier. For 20 muL sample volume and 10 mug Pd(NO3)(2), analytical curves in the 3.0-30 mug Se 1(-1) range were obtained. The method was applied for Se determination in acid digestates and slurries of 10 vegetable samples and one standard reference material (rice flower) and results were in agreement at 95% confidence level. Recoveries varied from 89 to 95% for spiked samples. The lifetime of the graphite tube was ca. 250 firings and the relative standard deviations (n = 12) for a typical acid digestate and slurry containing 20 mug Se 1(-1) were 3.8% and 8.3%, respectively. The limits of detection were 2.0 mug Se 1(-1) and 0.6 mug Se 1(-1) Se for digestates and slurries, respectively. (C) 2002 Elsevier B.V. Ltd. All rights reserved.

The shrinking behavior, apparent densities and rehydration indexes of fresh and osmotically pre-treated pineapple slices during air-drying were obtained. The air drying velocity varied from 1.5 to 2.5 m/s and the air temperature from 40 to 70 degreesC. By means of automatic control, it was possible to obtain drying curves under conditions of constant product temperature. Volumetric shrinkage of fresh samples was temperature independent for drying at high air velocities but, at lower velocities, increased with decreasing drying temperature. Osmotically pre-treating the material resulted in reduced shrinkage, as well as drying with product temperature controlled, due to lower drying times needed that led to shorter high temperature exposition. Moisture dependence of apparent density was highly non-linear and could be fitted by an empirical model. Fresh sample rehydration indexes were higher than osmosed ones and increased with increasing temperature, except for pre-treated samples dried at 70 degreesC, probably due to superficial sugar caramelization, which reduced surface water permeability.

Photosynthetic characteristics in response to irradiance were analysed in 21 field and culture populations of thirteen freshwater red algal species applying two distinct techniques (chlorophyll fluorescence and oxygen evolution). Photosynthesis-irradiance (PI) curves indicated adaptations to low irradiances in all species analysed, essentially characterized by occurrence of photoinhibition, low values of the saturation parameter (I-k < 225 mu mol m(-2) s(-1)) and compensation irradiance (I-c < 20 mu mol m(-2) s(-1)) and relatively high values of the effective quantum yield of photosystem II (Delta F/F'(m) >= 45). These characteristics have been reported in freshwater red algae and were confirmed from data based on the two techniques, indicating they are typically shade-adapted plants. on the other hand, some species (e.g. Batrachospermum delicatulum) can tolerate high irradiances (up to 2400 mu mol m(-2) s(-1)), suggesting they have mechanisms that enable them to avoid photodarnage of the photosynthetic apparatus. One of these mechanisms is the increase in dissipation of excessive energy captured by reaction centres after exposure to continuous irradiance, as reflected by the non-photochemical quenching fluorescence parameter in dark/light induction curves. Photo-inhibition occurred in all algae tested by both techniques. Light acclimation was evident particularly in field populations, as revealed by lower values of the saturation parameter (Ik) and the compensation irradiance (I-c) and higher values of Delta F/F'(m) in algae under low irradiances (shaded or heavily shaded stream segments), and vice-versa. Forms living within the boundary layer (e.g. crusts), in a region of reduced current velocity, tended to be more shade-adapted than semi-erect plants (e.g. non-mucilaginous or mucilaginous filaments), as indicated by highest values of photosynthetic efficiency (alpha = 0.31) and effective quantum yield (Delta F/F'(m) = 0.88) under natural conditions. Higher photo- synthetic rates (P-max) for the same species or population were observed under culture than field conditions when measured with the oxygen evolution technique, whereas the opposite trend was observed using chlorophyll fluorescence. High critical temperature superconductors are evolving from a scientific research subject into large-scale application devices. In order to meet this development demand they must withstand high current capacity under mechanical loads arising from thermal contraction during cooling from room temperature down to operating temperature (usually 77 K) and due to the electromagnetic forces generated by the current and the induced magnetic field. Among the HTS materials, the Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3Ox, compound imbedded in an Ag/AgMg sheath has shown the best results in terms of critical current at 77 K and tolerance against mechanical strain. Aiming to evaluate the influence of thermal stress induced by a number of thermal shock cycles we have evaluated the V-I characteristic curves of samples mounted onto semicircular holders with different curvature radius (9.75 to 44.5 mm). The most deformed sample (epsilon = 1.08%) showed the largest reduction of critical current (40%) compared to the undeformed sample and the highest sensitivity to thermal stress (I-c/I-c0 = 0.5). The V-I characteristic curves were also fitted by a potential curve displaying n-exponents varying from 20 down to 10 between the initial and last thermal shock cycle.

The aim of this work was to evaluate the influence of run training on the responsiveness of corpus cavernosum (CC) from rats made hypertensive by treatment with nitric oxide (NO) synthesis inhibitor. Wistar rats were divided into sedentary control (C-SD), exercise training (C-TR), N(omega)-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME) sedentary (LN-SD) and L-NAME trained (LN-TR) groups. The run training program consisted in 8 weeks in a treadmill, 5 days/week, each session lasted 60 min. L-NAME treatment (2 and 10mg/rat/day) started after 4 weeks of prior physical conditioning and lasted 4 weeks. Concentration-response curves were obtained for acetylcholine (ACh), sodium nitroprusside (SNP), sildenafil and BAY 41-2272. The effect of electrical field stimulation (EFS) on the relaxations responses of CC was evaluated. Run training prevented the arterial hypertension induced by L-NAME treatment (LN-SD: 135+/-2 and 141+/-2 mm Hg for both doses of L-NAME) compared to LN-SD groups (154+/-1 and 175+/-2 mm Hg, for 2 and 10 mg of L-NAME, respectively). Run training produced an increase in the maximal responses (E(max)) of CC for ACh (C-SD: 47+/-3; C-TR: 5271; and LN-TR: 53+/-3%) and SNP (C-SD: 8971; C-TR: 9871; and LN-TR: 95+/-1%). Both potency and E(max) for ACh were reduced in a dose of 10 mg of L-NAME, and run training restored the reduction of E(max) for ACh. No changes were found for BAY 41-2271 and sildenafil. Relaxing responses to EFS was reduced by L-NAME treatment that was restored by prior physical conditioning. In conclusion, our study shows a beneficial effect of prior physical conditioning on the impaired CC relaxing responses in rats made hypertensive by chronic NO blockade.

A new approach for studying photorefractive gratings in two-wave mixing experiments by a phase modulation technique is presented. The introduction of a large-amplitude, high-frequency sinusoidal phase modulation in one of the input beams blurs the interference pattern and provides powerful harmonic signals for accurate measurements of the grating diffraction efficiency eta and the output phase shift rho between the transmitted and diffracted waves. The blurring of the light fringes can be used to suppress the higher spatial harmonics of the grating, allowing a space-charge field with sinusoidal profile to be recorded. Although the presence of such a strong phase modulation affects the beam coupling in a rather complicated way, it is shown that for the special case of equal intensity input beams, the effect of the phase modulation on eta and rho is reduced to a weakening of the coupling strength. The potentialities of the technique are illustrated in a study of refractive-index waves excited by running interference patterns in a Bi12TiO20 crystal. Expressions for the diffraction efficiency and the output phase shift are derived and used to match numerically calculated curves to the experimental data. The theoretical model is supported by the very good data fitting and allows the computation of important material parameters.

In the 1980s D. Eisenbud and J. Harris posed the following question: What are the limits of Weierstrass points in families of curves degenerating to stable curves not of compact type? In the present article, we give a partial answer to this question. We consider the case where the limit curve has components intersecting at points in general position and where the degeneration occurs along a general direction. For this case we compute the limits of Weierstrass points of any order. However, for the usual Weierstrass points, of order one, we need to suppose that all of the components of the limit curve intersect each other.

Ferromagnetic behaviour at 300 K has been observed from SQUID experiments in ClO4- doped PMTh, the samples were prepared electrochemically at 25 degreesC in acetonitrile with 0.1M LiClO4 and then partially reduced. Atomic absorption analysis discards magnetic particles contamination. Hysteresis curves were observed for pressed pellets in ail range of temperatures (300K-2K). The remanence at 300 K and pressed at 250 bar was around 8.06x10(-4) emu/g with coercitivity of 130 Oe. The influence of water content in the solvent during the sample synthesis and the pressure is shown. We discuss a model that explains our data in terms of the anisotropic superexchange Dziatoshinski-Moriya interaction giving rise to weak ferromagnetism.

A curve defined over a finite field is maximal or minimal according to whether the number of rational points attains the upper or the lower bound in Hasse-Weil's theorem, respectively. In the study of maximal curves a fundamental role is played by an invariant linear system introduced by Ruck and Stichtenoth in [6]. In this paper we define an analogous invariant system for minimal curves, and we compute its orders and its Weierstrass points. In the last section we treat the case of curves having genus three in characteristic two.
