The bladder pressure necessary to cause vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) was measured in 16 female rats. Under general anesthesia, the ureters were exposed via an abdominal incission and a pressure catheter was placed near the uterovesical junction. Values of bladder distension and bladder pressure increase to cause VUR were obtained by injecting isotonic saline in one ureter until VUR in the opposite ureter was detected as a sudden pressure increase. After 5 min the same procedure was done on the contralateral side. This procedure was repeated eight times in each rat with a 15-min intermission. The bladder pressure at which VUR occurred was measured through a uretral catheter. Two groups were studied: G1, control, and G2, administration of intravenous metoclopramide (0.007 mg/100 g body weight) four times.

Twelve female Wistar rats received 1.5 mg/kg of colchicine (CLC) intravenously. Control animals were similarly injected with isotonic saline solution. The animals were killed 5 h, 24 h, 3 days and 7 days after injection. Ninety minutes prior to sacrifice, all animals received an intraperitoneal injection of 3H-proline. Autoradiograms of maxillary incisors showed that CLC increased the retention of the labeled precursor in the odontoblasts. It was also shown that the odontoblasts in the different sectors of the rat incisor present different sensitivities to the CLC action.

Carbachol injected into the locus coeruleus (LC) induced a dose-dependent natriuresis in the rat. This natriuresis was maintained above control levels during the 120 min of urine sampling. Seizures and arterial blood pressure increase were also observed but they disappeared within 20 min after carbachol injection. Natriuresis was not obtained with either injections of carbachol outside the LC or with hypertonic solutions injected into the LC. Injection of atropine into the LC blocked the natriuresis induced by carbachol. In summary, our data show that carbachol induces natriuresis by an action on muscarinic receptors located in the LC region. © 1990.

Changes in activities of Cu-Zn superoxide dismutase (SOD- E.C.1.15.1.1.) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH- E.C.1.1.1.27.) and levels of copper, total protein, triglycerides, phospholipids and total lipids were investigated in pancreas of rats after intratracheal administration of NiCl2 (8.4 mumol/kg). Nickel chloride induced increased SOD activity in pancreas and erythrocytes. This elevation was related to increased copper and decreased phospholipid content in pancreas of these animals. In conclusion, the ability of an animal to tolerate nickel chloride induced damage was governed by a delicate balance between the generation of cytotoxic agents and the various pancreas defense capabilities.

The kinetic of jejunal glucose transport was studied using perfused rat jejunum in vivo. Ninety rats were fed a diet deficient in niacin and 90 a control diet. The jejunal loops of 7 groups of animal were infused each group with one of following solutions of glucose: 5, 10, 20, 40, 80, 160 and 300 mM/l. The Vmax and Km values were determined. The results showed that the vitamin-deficient rats absorbed less glucose independently of the amount infused and these animals had lower Vmax (133.7 microM/15 min/15 cm) and Km (192.1 mM/l) than control groups (294.1 microM/15 min/15 cm and 171.8 mM/l, respectively). In conclusion one can assume that niacin deficiency leads to a decreased glucose absorption in the jejunal loops, when tested as in our experimental model.

The chronology of the wound healing process following tooth extraction was studied by means of two kinds of histological cuts. Two groups of 42 albino rats were employed. In the first one, the sockets were cut in a transversal way. In the second one the cuts were performed in a longitudinal way. The rats were sacrificed after 3, 6, 9, 15, 21, 24, and 28 days following the surgeries. After laboratorial outline the obtained pieces were stained by hematoxylin and eosin for histological purposes. It way be concluded that: 1. The results got from longitudinal cuts were in agreement to those described by other authors; 2. The transversal cuts allow us to detect intensive resorption of the lateral alveolar wall at the cervical thirs; 3. On the 21st day following dental extraction the incisor socket of the rat shows a great deal of areas not ossified; 4. The healing process of dental extraction wounds of the upper incisor of the rat is completed between 24 and 28 post operative days.

The effects of ultrasound on the wound healing process after teeth extractions were studied histologically. The right upper incisor was extracted in 56 rats. They were divided into 2 groups, one control (I) and one experimental (II). Group II received ultrasound stimulation that was applied with the frequency of repetition of 1,000 Hz and pulse length of 2,000 us continuously, during five minutes daily since the extraction day until 24 hours before the death. The rats were sacrificed at 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, and 21 postoperative days. The results showed a precocious granulation tissue formation, faster remodeling of osseous ridges, and consequently acceleration of the alveolar wound healing process.

In this study, 90 Wistar rats were used. They were equally divided into three experimental groups - control group (CG), diabetic group (DG) and treated diabetic group (TG). The analyzed parameters were clinical (behavior, activity, general aspect, weight, water ingestion and diuresis) and biochemical (fasting glycemia and urinary glycosis). The diabetes was induced by alloxan and, then, treated with insulin associated to oral hypoglycemic (acarbosis). Observations were made at 5 experimental moments, as it follows: 1, 3, 6, 9, and 12 months after the diabetes induction. The results were submitted to variance analysis, with 5% of significance level. The DG presented lower weight and higher diuresis level than the CG and TG. The water ingestion of the CG was similar to TG. The glycemia levels were higher in DG than in CG, at every experimental moment. The TG, however, presented glycemia similar to the CG, except for the dosages at 3, and 9 months. They urinary glycosis of the DG and TG were similar between themselves, but higher than the one of the CG.

Objective: To examine the basis for local wall motion abnormalities commonly seen in patients with ischemic heart disease, computer-controlled isolated muscle studies were carried out. Methods: Force patterns of physiologically sequenced contractions (PSCs) from rat left ventricular muscle preparations under well-oxygenated conditions and during periods of hypoxia and reoxygenation were recorded and stored in a computer. Force patterns of hypoxic-reoxygenating and oxygenated myocardium were applied to oxygenated and hypoxic-reoxygenating myocardium, respectively. Results: Observed patterns of shortening and lengthening closely resemble those obtained from ischemic and non-ischemic myocardial segments using ultrasonic crystals in intact dog hearts during coronary occlusion and reperfusion, and are similar to findings reported in angiographic studies of humans with coronary artery disease. Conclusion: The current study, demonstrating motions of oxygenated isolated muscle preparations which are similar to those in perfused segments of intact hearts with regional ischemia, supports the concept that the multiple motions of both ischemic and non-ischemic segments seen in regional myocardial disease can be explained by interactions of strongly and weakly contracting muscle during the physiologic cardiac cycle.

In this study we present the technical details, adaptations and modifications of the original procedure of pancreaticoduodenal transplantation in rats described by Lee et al. in 1972. We also present the results and technical failures observed in a follow-up of 12 years. From March, 1982 to December, 1994, we performed in the Laboratory of Surgical Technique and Experimental Surgery of Faculty of Medicine, Botucatu - UNESP, Brazil, 665 duodenopancreatectomies in donor rats and 592 surgeries for revascularization of the pancreatic graft in recipient animals. The observed percentage of technical failures in donor rats was 11% due to bleeding and/or vascular complications, irregular flushing of the graft with saline and respiratory insufficiency. In recipients of grafts, we observed a percentage of technical failures of 22,5% due to porto-caval thrombosis, vascular bleeding, pancreatitis and graft ischemia. In both surgeries, the successful results are directly related to the technical performance of the surgeon and the cares in the postoperative period.
