Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are related to discomfort in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). These diseases are multifactorial and treatment usually requires a combination of different approaches because each patient presents with different and usually complex needs. It is necessary to know how each expert should plan for a successful treatment.

This article describes the multidisciplinary treatment of an adult patient presenting with Angle Class III malocclusion, alteration of the mandibular position, vertical alveolar bone loss and absence of teeth in the lower posterior region. With advancing age the existence of occlusal interference due to loss of teeth or tooth structure is very common, resulting in periodontal problems due to occlusal trauma. The options for treatment of Class III malocclusion in adolescent and adult patients include compensatory orthodontic treatment in mild to moderate cases and orthognathic surgery for moderate to severe cases. The combination of various dental specialties enabled improvement in the social circumstances of the patient. This can be observed objectively by the final dental relationship and by the skeletal and tegumentary cephalometric comparison between the situation at the beginning and at the end of the treatment. The compensatory treatment performed permitted the successful correction of a Class III malocclusion in the clinical case presented.

People with disabilities require special dental care according to the type of disability, degree of involvement of intellectual and motor complications, such individuals may have dental problems that require specific training of the dentist. The objective of this study was a literature review emphasizing the need for early and preventive dental treatment for people with disabilities and training and technical knowledge necessary for quality service performed by the dentist. The literature review was conducted primarily using articles published nationally, to establish the development of dentistry for special patients in Brazil, thus emphasizing some policies and measures adopted in certain areas of the country. It was concluded that preventive care is essential and that the projects of health promotion are important facilitators of social inclusion and provide increased success in dental care. Technical training of professionals is extremely important, therefore, be important to trace an appropriate treatment plan and establish communication with the multidisciplinary team involved in patient care.

This study approached perceptions of mental illness by nineteen professionals who work in a Family Health Unit, by means of graphic representations (drawings). We used qualitative methods. Data was collected by means of a Presentative-Expressive Procedure. Four themes were identified using Thematic Analysis. The professionals associate mental disorders with: health care, medical-centered view, exclusion/inclusion, social environment. These perceptions are related to a biological paradigm, favoring the reproduction of prejudices about mental illness. The analysis also emphasizes the importance of a wide range of cares, while considering how difficult it may be for the professionals. We conclude that it is necessary to invest on professional preparation, in an attempt to transform ideoaffective contents presented by the subjects’ imaginary.

Question: Which communication factors used by clinicians during patient-clinician interactions are associated with satisfaction with care? Design: Systematic review with meta-analysis of studies investigating the association of verbal or nonverbal factors or interaction styles used by clinicians with patient satisfaction during an encounter between clinician and patient. Participants: Clinicians interacting with patients in primary care or rehabilitation settings. Results: Twenty-seven studies investigated 129 verbal, nonverbal, and interaction style factors. of these, 38 factors were consistently associated with satisfaction. Verbal factors concerning clinicians involving, facilitating, and supporting patients were associated with satisfaction with care. Most communication factors presented a fair correlation (r >= 0.21 but < 0.41) with satisfaction with care. Nonverbal factors such as time spent discussing prevention and time spent reading patient charts had a fair association with satisfaction with care (correlations range from 0.21 to 0.40). A moderate association was found between interaction styles such as caring (pooled r = 0.51, 95% CI 0.42 to 0.60) and satisfaction with care. Over half (58%) of the 129 identified factors never associated with satisfaction with care and the remainder associated inconsistently. Conclusion: The number of potential modifiable communication factors associated with satisfaction with care and the magnitude of their association partially support interventions to train clinicians in communication skills that value patient autonomy. Aims: To compare the effectiveness of adding cyclobenzaprine, tizanidine, or placebo to patient education and a self-care management program for patients with myofascial pain and specifically presenting with jaw pain upon awakening. Methods: Forty-five patients with a diagnosis of myofascial pain based on the guidelines of the American Academy of Orofacial Pain participated in this 3-week study. The subjects were randomly assigned into one of three groups: placebo group, TZA group (tizanidine 4 mg), or CYC group (cyclobenzaprine 10 mg). Patients were evaluated for changes in pain intensity, frequency, and duration by using the modified Severity Symptoms Index and changes in sleep quality with the use of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. Data were analyzed by ANOVA and post-hoc or nonparametric statistical tests as appropriate. Results: All three groups had a reduction in pain symptoms and improvement of sleep quality based on a comparison of pretreatment and treatment scores. However, no significant differences among the groups were observed at the posttreatment evaluation. Conclusion: The use of tizanidine or cyclobenzaprine in addition to self-care management and patient education was not more effective than placebo for the management of patients with myofascial jaw pain upon awakening.
