Electronic and optical properties of recently discovered single-shell carbon cluster nanotubes are studied through a semiempirical INDOCI method. The calculations are performed within the cluster model and include up to 196 atoms. The trend of the forbidden band gap with the number of carbon atoms (Cn n = 60, 10, 140) for a fixed diameter is analyzed. With increasing n the band gap decreases, as expected. The tubule, with diameter of 7.2Å (as C60-Buckyball) is predicted to be a metal or a narrow-gap semiconductor. The calculated absorption spectra of the clusters show a characteristic strong peak around 40,000 cm-1. Other features of the calculated UV-visible absorption spectra are discussed. © 1994.

Mononuclear palladium(II) complexes containing both pyrazole-type ligands and thiocyanate, of general formula [Pd(SCN) 2(L) 2] {L = pyrazole (HPz) and l-phenyl-3-methylpyrazole (phmPz)} have been prepared and characterized by elemental analysis, i.r. and n.m.r. spectroscopy and by single crystal X-ray diffraction methods. The Pd atom in these structures lies on the crystallographic inversion center; in a square-planar coordination geometry made by two sulfur and two nitrogen atoms of the ligands, both in trans positions.

The one-dimensional coordination polymer of palladium(II) with pyrazolato (Pz -) and azide (N 3 -) as bridging ligands, of formula [Pd 3(μ-N 3)(μ-Pz) 5] n, has been prepared. From IR and Raman studies it was evidenced the exobidentate nature of pyrazole ligands as well the μ-1,1-bridging coordination of azido groups. NMR experiments showed two sets of broadened signals with different intensities indicating the presence of pyrazolato groups in distinct chemical environments. The proposed structure of [Pd 3(μ-N 3)(μ-Pz) 5] n consists of a zigzag ribbon in which each (Pz) 2Pd(Pz) 2 entity is bound to two stacked planar units [Pd(μ-Pz)(μ-N 3)Pd core] with very weak Pd-Pd interaction, based on UV-Vis spectroscopy.

A method is described for the simultaneous determination of Cd, Cr, Ni and Pb in mineral water samples by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry with a transversely heated graphite atomizer (THGA) and a longitudinal Zeeman-effect background correction system. The electrothermal behavior of analytes during pyrolysis and atomization steps was studied without modifier, in presence of 5 μg Pd and 3 μg Mg(NO3)2 and in presence of 50 μg NH4H2PO4 and 3 μg Mg(NO3)2. A volume of 20 μL of a 0.028 mol L -1 HNO3 solution containing 50 μg L-1 Ni and Pb, 10 μg L-1 Cr and 5 μg L-1 Cd was dispensed into the graphite tube at 20°C. The mixture palladium/magnesium was selected as the optimum modifier. The pyrolysis and atomization temperatures were fixed at 1000°C and 2300°C, respectively. The characteristic masses were calculated as 2.2 pg Cd, 10 pg Cr, 42 pg Ni and 66 pg Pb and the lifetime of the graphite tube was around 600 firings. Limits of detection based on integrated absorbance were 0.02 μg L-1Cd, 0.94 μg L-1 Cr, 0.45 μg L-1 Ni and 0.75 μg L-1 Pb, which exceeded the requirements of Brazilian Food Regulation that establish the maximum permissible level for Cd, Cr, Ni and Pb at 3 μg L-1, 50 μg L-1, 20 μg L-1 and 10 μg L-1, respectively. The recoveries of Cd, Cr, Ni and Pb added to mineral water samples varied within the 93-108%, 96-104%, 87-101% and 98-108% ranges, respectively. Results of analysis of standard reference materials (National Institute of Standards and Technology: 1640-Trace Elements in Natural Water; 1643d-Trace Elements in Water) were in agreement with certified values at the 95% confidence level.

Descriptive herd variables (DVHE) were used to explain genotype by environment interactions (G x E) for milk yield (MY) in Brazilian and Colombian production environments and to develop a herd-cluster model to estimate covariance components and genetic parameters for each herd environment group. Data consisted of 180,522 lactation records of 94,558 Holstein cows from 937 Brazilian and 400 Colombian herds. Herds in both countries were jointly grouped in thirds according to 8 DVHE: production level, phenotypic variability, age at first calving, calving interval, percentage of imported semen, lactation length, and herd size. For each DVHE, REML bivariate animal model analyses were used to estimate genetic correlations for MY between upper and lower thirds of the data. Based on estimates of genetic correlations, weights were assigned to each DVHE to group herds in a cluster analysis using the FASTCLUS procedure in SAS. Three clusters were defined, and genetic and residual variance components were heterogeneous among herd clusters. Estimates of heritability in clusters 1 and 3 were 0.28 and 0.29, respectively, but the estimate was larger (0.39) in Cluster 2. The genetic correlations of MY from different clusters ranged from 0.89 to 0.97. The herd-cluster model based on DVHE properly takes into account G x E by grouping similar environments accordingly and seems to be an alternative to simply considering country borders to distinguish between environments.

Synthesis, characterization, and biological activity of a new water-soluble Pd(II)-deoxyalliin (S-allyl-L-cysteine) complex are described in this article. Elemental and thermal analysis for the complex are consistent with the formula [Pd(C6H10NO2S)2]. 13C NMR, 1H NMR, and IR spectroscopy show coordination of the ligand to Pd(II) through S and N atoms in a square planar geometry. Final residue of the thermal treatment was identified as a mixture of PdO and metallic Pd. Antiproliferative assays using aqueous solutions of the complex against HeLa and TM5 tumor cells showed a pronounced activity of the complex even at low concentrations. After incubation for 24 h, the complex induced cytotoxic effect over HeLa cells when used at concentrations higher than 0.40 mmol/L. At lower concentrations, the complex was nontoxic, indicating its action is probably due to cell cycle arrest, rather than cell death. In agreement with these results, the flow cytometric analysis indicated that after incubation for 24 h at low concentrations of the complex cells are arrested in G0/G1. © 2005 NRC Canada.

Thermal behavior of pyrazolyl complexes [PdCl2(HPz)2] (1), [PdCl2(HdmPz)2] (2), [Pd(SCN)2(HPz) 2] (3), [Pd(SCN)2(HdmPz)2] (4), [Pd(N 3)2(HdmPz)2] (5), [Pd(PzNHCO)2] (6) and [Pd(dmPzNHCO)2] (7) (HPz=pyrazole, HdmPz=3,5-dimethylpyrazole) has been studied by TG and DTA. In general, the thermal stability of [PdX 2(HL)2] (HL=HPz, HdmPz) compounds varies in the following order: HdmPz>HPz as well, according to the trends X=Cl ->SOT->NNN-. Except for 5, the [PdX 2(HL)2] complexes showed higher thermal stability than the 6 and 7 chelates. No stable intermediates were isolated during the thermal decompositions because of the overlapping degradation processes. The final products of the thermal decompositions were identified as metallic palladium by X-ray powder diffraction. © 2005 Akadémiai Kiadó, Budapest.

We present results of our numerical study of the critical dynamics of percolation observables for the two-dimensional Ising model. We consider the (Monte Carlo) short-time evolution of the system with small initial magnetization and heat-bath dynamics. We find qualitatively different dynamic behaviors for the magnetization M and for Ω, the so-called strength of the percolating cluster, which is the order parameter of the percolation transition. More precisely, we obtain a (leading) exponential form for Ω as a function of the Monte Carlo time t, to be compared with the power-law increase encountered for M at short times. Our results suggest that, although the descriptions in terms of magnetic or percolation order parameters may be equivalent in the equilibrium regime, greater care must be taken to interpret percolation observables at short times.

A new approach based on a N-a cluster photoabsorption model is proposed for the understanding of the puzzling steady increase behavior of the 90Zr (e, α) yield measured at the National Bureau of Standards (NBS) within the Giant Dipole Resonance and quasideuteron energy range. The calculation takes into account the pre-equilibrium emissions of protons, neutrons and alpha particles in the framework of an extended version of the multicollisional intranuclear cascade model (MCMC). Another Monte Carlo based algorithm describes the statistical decay of the compound nucleus in terms of the competition between particle evaporation (p, n, d, α, 3He and t) and nuclear fission. The results reproduce quite successfully the 90Zr (e,α) yield, suggesting that emissions of a particles are essential for the interpretation of the exotic increase of the cross sections.

The purpose of this study was to develop a methodology for evaluating neighborhood impacts using a Geographic Information System (GIS) and to apply the procedures to the companies of the High-Technology Industrial Cluster of São Carlos. To this end, an evaluation was made of the neighborhood impacts on the physical environment, urban components, quality of life, and urban infrastructure using impact matrices, and the impacts were assigned scores according to type, order, magnitude and duration. Fifty one companies were examined based on data provided by the companies themselves and on field surveys. The impacts are represented spatially in proportional symbols maps, based on the spatial distribution of the companies in the urban area of the city of São Carlos and the areas of influence of each company. The application of the proposed methodology served to validate it and indicated that the neighborhood impacts caused by the companies of this study are related to each company's type of activity, its size, and its occupation of the area. © 2008 Journal of Urban and Environmental Engineering (JUEE). The triphenylphosphine (PPh3) displaces the acetonitrile from [PdCl2(CH3CN)2], and subsequent addition of the potassium cyanate causes substitution of the chloro ligand by NCO- to yield trans-[Pd(NCO)2(PPh3)2]. The complex was characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The title compound was crystallized in a triclinic system, space group P1 with a = 9.213(3)Å, b = 9.781(7)Å, c = 10.483(5)Å, α = 111.39(5)°, β = 93.49(3)°, γ = 103.81(4)°, V = 845.0(1)Å3, Z = 1. The coordination geometry around Pd(II) in this complex is nearly square-planar, with the ligands in a trans relationship. 2008 © The Japan Society for Analytical Chemistry.

The dinuclear azido-palladium(II) complex [Pd2(N3)4(PPh3)2(μ-ted)], where PPh3 = triphenylphosphine and ted = triethylenediamine, was synthesized and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The title compound was crystallized in a triclinic system, space group P1 with a = 11.5875(2)Å, b = 13.0817(3)Å, c = 15.2618(3)Å, α = 93.306(2)°, β =110.040(1)°, γ = 98.486(1)°, V = 2134.95(8)Å3, Z = 2. Each Pd(II) center displays a distorted squareplanar coordination environment formed by two N atoms from two trans terminally coordinated azido groups, one P atom from the phosphine and one N atom from the bridging ted ligand. 2008 © The Japan Society for Analytical Chemistry.

The cyclopalladated complex [Pd(C2,N-dmba)(μ-SCN)]2, where dmba = N,N-dimethylbenzylamine, was structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. This compound crystallizes in the monoclinic system, space group P21/n with a = 9.578(1)Å, b = 12.323(2)Å, c = 10.279(2)Å, β = 117.03(1)°, V = 1080.7(3)Å3, Z = 2. Complex biological systems require sophisticated approach for analysis, once there are variables with distinct measure levels to be analyzed at the same time in them. The mouse assisted reproduction, e.g. superovulation and viable embryos production, demand a multidisciplinary control of the environment, endocrinologic and physiologic status of the animals, of the stressing factors and the conditions which are favorable to their copulation and subsequently oocyte fertilization. In the past, analyses with a simplified approach of these variables were not well succeeded to predict the situations that viable embryos were obtained in mice. Thereby, we suggest a more complex approach with association of the Cluster Analysis and the Artificial Neural Network to predict embryo production in superovulated mice. A robust prediction could avoid the useless death of animals and would allow an ethic management of them in experiments requiring mouse embryo.
