Monodisperse spheres of silica and latex were obtained by a surfactant free styrene polimerization and the Stober method respectively. Controlling settling either by centrifugation or by dip-coating colloidal crystals could be obtained. Silica inverse opals were prepared by using the latex colloidal crystals as templates and TEOS/ethanol solution. Eu3+ containing silica spheres were obtained dispersing silica spheres in Eu(NO3)(3) isopropanol solutions. Emission spectra suggest the formation of an amorphous Eu3+ containing phase well adhered at the spheres surface. The utilization of solutions of trifluoroacetates salts of Pb2+ and Eu3+ was observed to destroy the silica spherical pattern when samples are treated at 1000degreesC. In that case nanocrystals of PbF2 and amorphous silica were obtained after heat treatment.

This work presents the study of substrate surface effects on rhodamine B-containing silica films obtained from TEOS (tetraethylorthosilicate) acid hydrolysis. Soda-lime glass substrates were treated with basic solution under different reaction times and temperatures. Rhodamine B-containing silica films were deposited on pre-treated substrates by the spin-coating method. The substrate surface directly affects film morphology and homogeneity. The films are formed by packed silica spheres which protect the dye against acid-base attack. Luminescence spectra present shifts on the dye emission maximum as expected for different pH values on the substrate surface depending on the alkaline treatment. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. Acicular monodispersed Fe1-xREx (RE= Nd, Sm,Eu,Tb;x=0, 0.05, 0.10) metallic nanoparticles (60 +/- 5 nm in length and axial ratio similar to6) obtained by reduction of alumina-coated goethite nanoparticles-containing rare earth (RE) under hydrogen flow are reported. Alumina and maghemite thin layers on particle surface were used to protect the goethite particles against sintering and oxidation, respectively. Al and RE additions were obtained by successive heterocoagulation reactions. Aluminum sulfate (10 at.% based on Fe) was dissolved in water and the pH adjusted to 12.5 with NaOH solution. Goethite particles were suspended in this solution and CO2 gas was blown into the slurry to neutralize it to a pH 8.5 or less. Particles were purified and dehydrated to effect transformation to alumina-coated hematite nanoparticles, which were re-suspended in aqueous solution in which RE sulfate (0-0.15 at.% based on Fe) has been dissolved, and the pH increased by ammonia aqueous solution addition. Resulted alumina-coated RE-doped hematite nanoparticles were reduced to metal at 450 degreesC/12 h under hydrogen flow and passivated with nitrogen-containing ethanol vapor at room temperature. Acicular monodispersed metallic nanoparticle systems were obtained and the presence of Al and RE were confirmed by induced-coupled plasma spectrometry analysis. X-ray diffraction, Mossbauer spectroscopy, and magnetization data are in agreement with the nanosized alpha-Fe core in a bcc structure, having a spinel structure, gammaFe(2)O(3), with thickness similar to1.5 run on particle surface. Main magnetic parameters showed saturation magnetization decreases and significant increasing in the coercive field with the RE composition increases. Magnetic properties of these particles, similar to40% smaller than those commercially available, suggest a decrease in the bit-size for high-density magnetic or magneto-optics recording media application. Indium-tin oxide nanowires were deposited by excimer laser ablation onto catalyst-free oxidized silicon substrates at a low temperature of 500 degrees C in a nitrogen atmosphere. The nanowires have branches with spheres at the tips, indicating a vapor-liquid-solid (VLS) growth. The deposition time and pressure have a strong influence on the areal density and length of the nanowires. At the earlier stages of growth, lower pressures promote a larger number of nucleation centers. With the increase in deposition time, both the number and length of the wires increase up to an areal density of about 70 wires/mu m(2). After this point all the material arriving at the substrate is used for lengthening the existing wires and their branches. The nanowires present the single-crystalline cubic bixbyite structure of indium oxide, oriented in the [100] direction. These structures have potential applications in electrical and optical nanoscale devices.

With suitable thermal treatments, a nearly stoichiometric cordierite glass (2 MgO.2 Al2O3. 5 SiO2) shows a variety of crystal morphologies on the external surfaces: lozenges, regular and elongated hexagons, spherical and square shaped particles. We initially identified these morphologies through optical and scanning electron microscopy techniques. Their structural features were distinguished by x-ray diffraction patterns, infrared and Roman microprobe spectra. We concluded that there are close structural similarities for: lozenges and glass matrix; regular and elongated hexagons; spherical and square particles. The ordering degree increases in the following sequence: glass matrix, lozenges, hexagons, squares and spheres. The lozenge crystals are known as X-phase. The hexagons belong to the μ-cordierite (high quartz solid solution) metastable phase and the squares and spheres to the α-cordierite stable phase.

The preparation of spherical Y2O2S and Y2O2S:Eu particles using a solid-gas reaction of monodispersed precursors with elemental sulfur vapor under an argon atmosphere has been investigated. The precursors, undoped and doped yttrium basic carbonates, are synthesized by aging a stock solution containing the respective cation chloride and urea at 82-84 °C. Y2O2S and Y2O2S:Eu were characterized in terms of their composition, crystallinity and morphology by chemical analysis, X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), IR spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The Eu-doped oxysulfide was also characterized by atomic absorption spectrophotometry and luminescence spectroscopy. The spherical morphology of oxysulfide products and of basic carbonate precursors suggests a topotatic inter-relationship between both compounds.

The purpose of this work is to obtain spherical particles yttrium iron garnet (YIG) by coprecipitation technique. The spherical particles were obtained from either nitrate or chloride salt solutions by controlling the precipitation medium. Different agents of dispersion such as PVP and ammonium iron sulfate were used to optimize the shape and size of YIG. Samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and vibrating sample magnetometry. The results show that the samples phase transition takes place at 850°C (orthorhombic phase) and at 1200°C (cubic phase). Spherical shape particles, with diameter of around 0.5 μm, present magnetization values close to the bulk value (26 emu g -1). © 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

In the context of the hamiltonian formulation of the teleparallel equivalent of general relativity we compute the gravitational energy of Kerr and Kerr Anti-de Sitter (Kerr-AdS) space-times. The present calculation is carried out by means of an expression for the energy of the gravitational field that naturally arises from the integral form of the constraint equations of the formalism. In each case, the energy is exactly computed for finite and arbitrary spacelike two-spheres, without any restriction on the metric parameters. In particular, we evaluate the energy at the outer event horizon of the black holes. © SISSA/ISAS 2003.

In the present work we show the expressions of the gravitational potential of homogeneous bodies with non-spherical three-dimensional shapes in order to study the trajectories around these bodies. The potentials of a prolate and an oblate ellipsoids with different values of semi-major axis are presented. Their results are validated with a test using a spherical body in order to guarantee the approximation of any body as a polyhedral model of the body. With these expressions we study trajectories of a point of mass around the three-dimensional bodies and the results indicated that there is a group of orbits around those bodies and the polyhedral form of the object does work very well. This paper presents a comparative analysis between the experimental characterization and the numerical simulation results for a three-dimensional FCC photonic crystal (PhC) based on a self-assembly synthesis of monodispersive latex spheres. Specifically, experimental optical characterization, by means of reflectance measurements under variable angles over the lattice plane family [1,1, 1], are compared to theoretical calculations based on the Finite Di®erence Time Domain (FDTD) method, in order to investigate the correlation between theoretical predictions and experimental data. The goal is to highlight the influence of crystal defects on the achieved performance.

The production of pellets by Aspergillus niger and the FePO 4 (FeP) solubilization through the use of free or immobilized spores and pellets were studied. The media Sabouraud, MS-FeP, MS-K 2HPO 4, Czapek and Malt were used for pellets yield. Enhanced growth and pellets production were found in the Sabouraud and MS-FeP than those produced by the other media. Pellets produced in Sabouraud were larger in size and formed well-defined spheres than those produced in MS-FeP. Pellets amounts varying from 2 to 8 mg mL, -1 were inoculated in the MS-FeP medium. The greatest quantity of solubilized FeP was found when 6 mg of pellets mL, -1 were used. While the free spores were the worst form used for FeP solubilization in culture medium, free pellets allowed for the production of the greatest quantities of soluble phosphate, even after repeated use of the pellets. In the soil, pellets solubilized similar quantities of FeP compared to the immobilized A. niger spores and can be used with advantage since they are easily produced. © 2010 Academic Journals Inc.
