Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to provide information on lubricant contamination by biodiesel using vibration and neural network.Design/methodology/approach - The possible contamination of lubricants is verified by analyzing the vibration and neural network of a bench test under determinated conditions.Findings - Results have shown that classical signal analysis methods could not reveal any correlation between the signal and the presence of contamination, or contamination grade. on other hand, the use of probabilistic neural network (PNN) was very successful in the identification and classification of contamination and its grade.Research limitations/implications - This study was done for some specific kinds of biodiesel. Other types of biodiesel could be analyzed.Practical implications Contamination information is presented in the vibration signal, even if it is not evident by classical vibration analysis. In addition, the use of PNN gives a relatively simple and easy-to-use detection tool with good confidence. The training process is fast, and allows implementation of an adaptive training algorithm.Originality/value - This research could be extended to an internal combustion engine in order to verify a possible contamination by biodiesel.

Introduction: Root resorption can cause damage in orthodontic patients. Digital subtraction radiography (DSR) is a useful resource for the detection of mineral losses. The purpose of this study was to compare the efficacy of digital radiography (DR) and DSR in detecting simulated external root resorption. Examiner agreement between the 2 techniques was also evaluated. Methods: Root resorptions of various sizes were simulated on the apical and lingual aspects of 49 teeth from 9 dry human mandibles. The teeth were radiographed in standardized conditions. The radiographs were registered with Regeemy Image Registration and Mosaicking (version 0.2.43-RCB, DPI-INPE, Sao Jose dos Campos, São Paulo, Brazil) and subtracted with Image Tool (University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio). The subtracted images and the digital radiographs were evaluated by 3 oral radiologists. Results: No statistically significant differences were found for the methods in the detection of apical root resorptions, independently from lesion size, and of lingual resorptions of 1.2 mm or greater. DSR was significantly better than DR for detection of lingual resorptions up to 1 mm. Resorptions less than 0.5 mm were not precisely detected by either method. DSR provided better intraexaminer and interexaminer agreement than did DR. Conclusions: Both methods are precise for detection of apical root resorptions as small as 0.5 mm and lingual resorptions of 1 mm or more. However, DSR frequently performed better than did DR. We investigate the sensitivity of the heavy ion mode of the LHC to Higgs boson and Radion production via photon-photon fusion through the analysis of the processes gg -> gg, gg ->, and gg ® ggin peripheral heavy ion collisions. We suggest cuts to improve the Higgs and Radion signal over standard model background ratio and determine the capability of LHC to detect these particles production.

Evaluation of the prevalence and characteristics of tinnitus in a Brazilian series of sleep bruxism patients. In this descriptive study, 100 patients (80 women and 20 men) were selected through the self-report of grinding teeth during sleep, confirmed by room mate or family member. They were evaluated according to a systematized approach: a questionnaire for orofacial pain and the Portuguese version of the Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders. The patients were divided into two groups: group A, 54 patients with complaint of tinnitus and group B, 46 patients without tinnitus complaint. The mean age was 37.85 (13-66 years) and 34.02 years (20-59 years), respectively, for groups A and B (P = 0.1164). There was statistically significant difference between the two groups, with higher prevalence for the group A, in relation to: presence of chronic facial pain (P = 0.0007); number of areas painful to palpation in the masticatory and cervical muscles (P = 0.0032); myofascial pain in the masticatory muscles (P = 0.0003); absence of teeth without prosthetic replacement (P = 0.0145) and indices of depression (P = 0.0234). Structural alterations of the TMJ, like disc displacement and vertical dimension loss did not differ for the two groups. Tinnitus frequency was higher in patients with sleep bruxism and chronic facial pain. Myofascial pain, number of areas painful to palpation in the masticatory and cervical muscles, higher levels of depression and tooth absence without prosthetic replacement were more frequent in the group with tinnitus.

Retinopathy, a common complication of diabetes, is characterized by an unbalanced production of nitric oxide (NO), a process regulated by nitric oxide synthase (NOS). We hypothesized that retinopathy might stem from changes in the insulin receptor substrate (IRS)/PI3K/AKT pathway and/or expression of NOS isoforms. Thus, we analysed the morphology and apoptosis index in retinas of obese rats in whom insulin resistance had been induced by a high-fat diet (HFD). Immunoblotting analysis revealed that the retinal tissue of HFD rats had lower levels of AKT1, eNOS and nNOS protein than those of samples taken from control animals. Furthermore, immunohistochemical analyses indicated higher levels of iNOS and 4-hydroxynonenal and a larger number of apoptotic nuclei in HFD rats. Finally, both the inner and outer retinal layers of HFD rats were thinner than those in their control counterparts. When considered alongside previous results, these patterns suggest two major ways in which HFD might impact animals: direct activity of ingested fatty acids and/or via insulin-resistance-induced changes in intracellular pathways. We discuss these possibilities in further detail and advocate the use of this animal model for further understanding relationships between retinopathy, metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes. © 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Currently, timed ovulation induction and timed artificial insemination (TAI) can be performed in buffalo using GnRH or estradiol plus progesterone/progestin (P4)-releasing devices and prostaglandin F-2 alpha (PGF(2 alpha)). The control of the emergence of follicular waves and of ovulation at predetermined times, without the need for estrus detection, has facilitated the management and improved the efficiency of AI programs in buffalo during the breeding and nonbreeding season. Multiple ovulations, embryo transfer, ovum collection and in vitro embryo production have been shown to be feasible in buffalo, although low efficiency and limited commercial application of these techniques have been documented as well. These results could be associated with low ovarian follicular pools, high levels of follicular atresia and failures of the oocyte to enter the oviduct after superstimulation of follicular growth. This review discusses a number of key points related to the manipulation of ovarian follicular growth to improve pregnancy rates following TAI and embryo transfer of in vivo- and in vitro-derived embryos in buffalo.
