This paper presents a methodology based on geostatistical theory for quantifying the risks associated with heavy-metal contamination in the harbor area of Santana, Amapa State, Northern Brazil. In this area there were activities related to the commercialization of manganese ore from Serra do Navio. Manganese and arsenic concentrations at unsampled sites were estimated by postprocessing results from stochastic annealing simulations; the simulations were used to test different criteria for optimization, including average, median, and quantiles. For classifying areas as contaminated or uncontaminated, estimated quantiles based on functions of asymmetric loss showed better results than did estimates based on symmetric loss, such as the average or the median. The use of specific loss functions in the decision-making process can reduce the costs of remediation and health maintenance. The highest global health costs were observed for manganese. The Bura do Itapira pua carbonatite is located in southern Brazil and belongs to the Cretaceous Ponta Grossa alkaline-carbonatitic province related to the opening of the South Atlantic. The carbonatite complex is emplaced in Proterozoic granites and is mainly composed of plutonic magnesio- to ferrocarbonatite, with smaller amounts of subvolcanic magnesiocarbonatite. Hydrothermal alteration of the carbonatite has led to the formation of quartz, apatite, fluorite, rue earth fluorocarbonates, barite and sulfides in variable proportions. Trace element data, delta(13)C and delta(18)O are presented here, with the aim of better understanding the geochemical nature of hydrothermal alteration related to rare earth elements (REE) mineralization. The non-overprinted plutonic carbonatite shows the lowest REE contents, and its primitive carbon and oxygen stable isotopic composition places it in the field of primary igneous carbonatites. Two types of hydrothermally overprinted plutonic carbonatites can be distinguished based on secondary minerals and geochemical composition. Type I contains mainly quartz, rare earth fluorocarbonates and apatite as hydrothermal secondary minerals, and has steep chondrite normalized REE patterns, with Sigma(REE+Y) of up to 3 wt.% (i.e., two orders of magnitude higher than in fresh plutonic samples). In contrast, the Type II overprint contains apatite, fluorite and barite as dominant hydrothermal minerals, and is characterized by heavy REE enrichment relative to the fresh samples, with flat chondrite normalized REE patterns. Carbon and oxygen stable isotope ratios of Types I and II are elevated (delta(18)O + 8 to + 12 parts per thousand; delta(13)C - 6 to - 2 parts per thousand) relative to the fresh samples. Hydrothermally overprinted carbonatites exposed to weathering show even higher delta(18)O values (delta(18)O 13 to 25 parts per thousand) but no additional REE enrichment. The subvolcanic carbonatite has anomalously high delta(13)C of up to + 1 parts per thousand, which suggests crustal contamination through interaction with carbonate-bearing metasediments.

The magneto-optical rotation at room temperature was measured for three Ga:S:La:O chalcogenide glasses at several laser lines in the visible. The first sample was a binary system constituted by 70 mol % Ga2S3 and 30 mol % La2O3, whereas in the second and third ones the lanthanum oxide was partially substituted by lanthanum sulfide, keeping the amount of gallium sulfide fixed. A pulsed magnetic field between 50 and 80 kG was used for the Faraday rotation measurements. The Verdet constant for one of the ternary samples was found to be as high as 0.205 min G(-1) cm(-1) at 543 nm, indicating that these chalcogenide glasses are very promising for magneto-optical applications. The data for each sample were fitted using the expected analytical expression for the magneto-optical dispersion. Measurements of the refractive index of the glasses at 632.8 nm are also reported. Data on the magneto-optical properties of two high Verdet constant, heavy-metal oxide diamagnetic glasses are also included for comparison. Glasses and glass-ceramics have been obtained in oxyfluoride systems involving lead and cadmium fluorides and one of the well-known glass former oxides SiO2, B2O3 and TeO2. Vitreous domains were established and a wide range of compositions including high heavy metal contents lead to stable glasses. Amorphous structures have been studied by short-range order spectroscopy techniques (Raman scattering and x-ray absorption) and molecular basic structures have been identified. Besides the usual oxides, the role of glass former could also be proposed for cadmium ions. Special attention has been paid for crystallization process. Cubic lead fluoride, cubic lead tellurite, tetragonal tellurium oxide and a solid solution of the type Pb1-xCdxF2 are obtained as crystallization products depending on the composition and temperature of heat treatments. Pb1-xCdxF2 solid solutions are well known superionic materials and obtaining this solid solution as a crystal phase could be very interesting for applications concerning ionic electrical conduction properties. The addition of rare earth ions led to the control of the crystallization process. In the presence of the nucleating ion only the cubic form beta-PbF2 was identified. Rare earth ions are present in the crystal phase and crystal-like spectroscopic properties were observed suggesting interesting applications for these perfectly transparent glass ceramics in photonics.

Four lignin samples were extracted from sugar cane bagasse using four different alcohols (methanol, ethanol, n-propanol, and 1-butanol) via the organosolv-CO2 supercritical pulping process. Langmuir films were characterized by surface pressure vs mean molecular area (Pi-A) isotherms to exploit information at the molecular level carrying out stability tests, cycles of compression/expansion (hysteresis), subphase temperature variations, and metallic ions dissolved into the water subphase at different concentrations. Briefly, it was observed that these lignins are relatively stable on the water surface when compared to those obtained via different extraction processes. Besides, the Pi-A isotherms are shifted to smaller molecular areas at higher subphase temperatures and to larger molecular areas when the metallic ions are dissolved into the subphase. The results are related to the formation of stable aggregates (domains) onto the water subphase by these lignins, as shown in the Pi-A isotherms. It was found as well that the most stable lignin monolayer onto the water subphase is that extracted with 1-butanol. Homogeneous Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films of this lignin could be produced as confirmed by UV-vis absorption spectroscopy and the cumulative transfer parameter. In addition, FTIR analysis showed that this lignin LB film is structured in a way that the phenyl groups are organized preferentially parallel to the substrate surface. Further, these LB films were deposited onto gold interdigitated electrodes and ITO and applied in studies involving the detection of Cd+2 ions in aqueous solutions at low concentration levels throughimpedance spectroscopy and electrochemical measurements. FTIR spectroscopy was carried out before and after soaking the thin films into Cd+2 aqueous solutions, revealing a possible physical interaction between the lignin phenyl groups and the heavy metal ions. The importance of using nanostructured systems is demonstrated as well by comparing both LB and cast films.

The photospheres of stars hosting planets have larger metallicity than stars lacking planets. This could be the result of a metallic star contamination produced by the bombarding of hydrogen-deficient solid bodies. In the present work we study the possibility of an earlier metal enrichment of the photospheres by means of impacting planetesimals during the first 20-30 Myr. Here we explore this contamination process by simulating the interactions of an inward migrating planet with a disc of planetesimal interior to its orbit. The results show the percentage of planetesimals that fall on the star. We identified the dependence of the planet's eccentricity (e(p)) and time-scale of migration (tau) on the rate of infalling planetesimals. For very fast migrations (tau= 10(2) and 10(3) yr) there is no capture in mean motion resonances, independently of the value of e(p). Then, due to the planet's migration the planetesimals suffer close approaches with the planet and more than 80 per cent of them are ejected from the system. For slow migrations (tau= 10(5)and 10(6) yr) the percentage of collisions with the planet decreases with the increase of the planet's eccentricity. For e(p) = 0 and 0.1 most of the planetesimals were captured in the 2:1 resonance and more than 65 per cent of them collided with the star. Whereas migration of a Jupiter mass planet to very short pericentric distances requires unrealistic high disc masses, these requirements are much smaller for smaller migrating planets. Our simulations for a slowly migrating 0.1 M-Jupiter planet, even demanding a possible primitive disc three times more massive than a primitive solar nebula, produces maximum [Fe/H] enrichments of the order of 0.18 dex. These calculations open possibilities to explain hot Jupiter exoplanet metallicities.

Gold has been exploited intensively in the Brazilian Amazon during the past 20 years, and the elemental mercury (Hg) used in amalgamating the gold has caused abnormal Hg concentrations in waterways. Since 1986 particular attention has been given to the Madeira River because it is the largest tributary of the Amazon River and gold mining was officially allowed on a 350-km sector of the river. In this paper, samples of sediments from nine lakes located in the Madeira River basin, Rondonia State, Brazil, were analysed for mercury and organic matter. The average Hg content ranged between 33 and 157 ppb, which is about 8-40 times higher than the average value corresponding to 4.4 ppb for rocks occurring in the area (regional background). Significant correlation was found between the Hg content and organic matter in the sediments, indicating its importance on the retention of this heavy metal.

A simulation of erbium-doped glass systems, which provides population density for the excited states involved in the 1.5 mu m and also for 2.7 mu m emissions when pumped around 980 nm, is presented. To describe the diode pump laser processes, a theoretical model based in a coupled system of differential rate equations was developed. The approach used and the obtained spectroscopic parameters are discussed. The materials under study are two oxide glasses, lead fluoroborate (PbO-PbF2-B2O3), and heavy metal oxide (Bi2O3 PbO-Ga2O3) and a fluoride glass (ZrF4-BaF2-LaF3-AlF3-NaF), all of them doped with Er3+. Glasses in the binary system (100 - x)SbPO4-xWO3 (20 <= x <= 60, x in mol%) have been prepared and characterized. Differential thermal analysis (DTA) shows that the glass transition temperature, T-g increases from 412 degrees C, for samples containing 20 mol% of WO3 to 481 degrees C observed for glass containing 60 mol%. Sample containing 40 mol% in WO3 were observed to be the most stable against devitrification. The structural organization of the glasses has been studied by using Fourier transform infra-red (FTIR), Raman, P-31 Magic angle spinning (MAS) and spin echo nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopies. Results suggest two distinct networks comprising the glass structure, one with high SbPO4 content and the other characteristic of the highest WO3 content samples. The glasses present photochromic properties. Colour changes are observed for samples after exposure to ultraviolet or visible laser light. XANES, at L-1 absorption edge of tungsten, suggests partial reduction from W6+ to W5+ species during the laser irradiation. The photochromic effects and the colour changes, promoted by laser excitation, are reversible and easily removed by heat for during 1 h at 150 degrees C. Subsequent 'write/erase' cycles can be done without degradation of the glasses. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
