The methods of effective field theory are used to explore the theoretical and phenomenological aspects of the torsion field. The spinor action coupled to the electromagnetic field and torsion possesses an additional softly broken gauge symmetry. This symmetry enables one to derive the unique form of the torsion action compatible with unitarity and renormalizability. It turns out that the antisymmetric torsion field is equivalent to a massive axial vector field. The introduction of scalars leads to serious problems which are revealed after the calculation of the leading two-loop divergences. Thus the phenomenological aspects of torsion may be studied only for the fermion-torsion systems. In this part of the paper we obtain upper bounds for the torsion parameters using present experimental data on forward-backward Z-pole asymmetries, data on the experimental limits on four-fermion contact interaction (LEP, HERA, SLAC, SLD, CCFR) and also TEVATRON limits on the cross section of a new gauge boson, which could be produced as a resonance at high energy pp collisions. The present experimental data enable one to put limits on the torsion parameters for the various ranges of the torsion mass. We emphasize that for a torsion mass of the order of the Planck mass no independent theory for torsion is possible, and one must directly use string theory. © 1999 Elsevier Science B.V.

The quark-meson-coupling model is used to study droplet formation from the liquid-gas phase transition in cold asymmetric nuclear matter. The critical density and proton fraction for the phase transition are determined in the mean field approximation. Droplet properties are calculated in the Thomas-Fermi approximation. The electromagnetic field is explicitly included and its effects on droplet properties are studied. The results are compared with the ones obtained with the NL1 parametrization of the non-linear Walecka model. © 2000 Elsevier Science B.V.

The quadratic form of the Dirac equation in a Riemann space-time yields a gravitational gyromagnetic ratio κ(S) = 2 for the interaction of a Dirac spinor with curvature. A gravitational gyromagnetic ratio κ(S) = 1 is also found for the interaction of a vector field with curvature. It is shown that the Dirac equation in a curved background can be obtained as the square-root of the corresponding vector field equation only if the gravitational gyromagnetic ratios are properly taken into account.

A strict proof of the equivalence of the Duffin-Kemmer-Petiau and Klein-Gordon Fock theories is presented for physical S-matrix elements in the case of charged scalar particles minimally interacting with an external or quantized electromagnetic field. The Hamiltonian canonical approach to the Duffin - Kemmer Petiau theory is first developed in both the component and the matrix form. The theory is then quantized through the construction of the generating functional for the Green's functions, and the physical matrix elements of the S-matrix are proved to be relativistic invariants. The equivalence of the two theories is then proved for the matrix elements of the scattered scalar particles using the reduction formulas of Lehmann, Symanzik, and Zimmermann and for the many-photon Green's functions.

We develop a relativistic quark model for pion structure, which incorporates the nontrivial structure of the vacuum of quantum chromodynamics as modelled by instantons. Pions are bound states of quarks and the strong quark-pion vertex is determined from an instanton induced effective Lagrangian. The interaction of the constituents of the pion with the external electromagnetic field is introduced in gauge invariant form. The parameters of the model, i.e., effective instanton radius and constituent quark mass, are obtained from the vacuum expectation values of the lowest dimensional quark and gluon operators and the low-energy observables of the pion. We apply the formalism to the calculation of the pion form factor by means of the isovector nonforward parton distributions and find agreement with the experimental data. © 2000 Elsevier Science B.V.

This work proposes a methodology for non destructive testing (NDT) of reinforced concrete structures, using superficial magnetic fields and artificial neural networks, in order to identify the size and position of steel bars, embedded into the concrete. For the purposes of this paper, magnetic induction curves were obtained by using a finite element program. Perceptron Multilayered (PML) ANNs, with Levemberg-Marquardt training algorithm were used. The results presented very good agreement with the expect ones, encouraging the development of real systems based upon the proposed methodology.

To enhance the global search ability of Population Based Incremental Learning (PBIL) methods, It Is proposed that multiple probability vectors are to be Included on available PBIL algorithms. As a result, the strategy for updating those probability vectors and the negative learning and mutation operators are redefined as reported. Numerical examples are reported to demonstrate the pros and cons of the newly Implemented algorithm. ©2006 IEEE.

A major challenge in cancer radiotherapy is to deliver a lethal dose of radiation to the target volume while minimizing damage to the surrounding normal tissue. We have proposed a model on how treatment efficacy might be improved by interfering with biological responses to DNA damage using exogenous electric fields as a strategy to drastically reduce radiation doses in cancer therapy. This approach is demonstrated at this Laboratory through case studies with prokaryotes (bacteria) and eukaryotes (yeast) cells, in which cellkilling rates induced by both gamma radiation and exogenous electric fields were measured. It was found that when cells exposed to gamma radiation are immediately submitted to a weak electric field, cell death increases more than an order of magnitude compared to the effect of radiation alone. This finding suggests, although does not prove, that DNA damage sites are reached and recognized by means of long-range electric DNA-protein interaction, and that exogenous electric fields could destructively interfere with this process. As a consequence, DNA repair is avoided leading to massive cell death. Here we are proposing the use this new technique for the design and construction of novel radiotherapy facilities associated with linac generated gamma beams under controlled conditions of dose and beam intensity.

In this work we investigate a possible magnetic moment generation for massive neutral particles with spins-1 and -2 coupled non-minimally, in a specific way, to an external electromagnetic field. It is found that, in the nonrelativistic limit, these particles present g = 1. This result, worked out in the framework of Relativistic Quantum Mechanics, seems to suggest that g = 1 for all massive and neutral particles of any spin ≤ 2. We also compare with the results obtained for massive charged particles of spins-1 and -2, in the same regime (nonrelativistic), in order to investigate the role played by the spin separetely from the charge. Objective: To evaluate the variations of temperature in 2 models of domestic micro-wave ovens, single emission (F 1) and dual emission of waves (F 2), to investigate areas of higher and lower intensity of the electromagnetic field. Materials and methods: A beaker containing water (60mL, 26°C) was irradiated into each of 5 positions (front - P 1; right - P 2; posterior - P 3; left - P 4; central - P 5) within each oven (900W/ 2min). To evaluate the effectiveness of disinfection in F 2, Bacillus subtilis suspension was irradiated in each of the 5 positions for 2, 4 and 6minutes. Data were analyzed by Kruskal-Wallis and nonparametric multiple comparisons at 5% significance level. Results: 84.80°C (F 1) and 92.01°C (F 2) were mean levels of temperature. For F 1, the positions P 1, P 2, P 3 and P 5 showed similar values among them and upper than P 4, while for F 2, the positions P 1, P 2 and P 4 were similar among them and upper than P 3 and P 5. Kruskal-Wallis test found significant differences between positions and models of ovens (p<0.05). It was observed that P 2 promoted bacterial death from 4min of irradiation, while the other positions promoted disinfection at 6min of irradiation. Conclusion: The protocols of position and time specified for the various procedures in microwave ovens can be different according to the characteristics of each device due to the electromagnetic field heterogeneity. © 2011 Sociedade Portuguesa de Estomatologia e Medicina Dentária.

Plasmon-enhanced spectroscopic techniques have expanded single-molecule detection (SMD) and are revolutionizing areas such as bio-imaging and single-cell manipulation. Surface-enhanced (resonance) Raman scattering (SERS or SERRS) combines high sensitivity with molecularfingerprint information at the single-molecule level. Spectra originating from single-molecule SERS experiments are rare events, which occur only if a single molecule is located in a hot-spot zone. In this spot, the molecule is selectively exposed to a significant enhancement associated with a high, local electromagnetic field in the plasmonic substrate. Here, we report an SMD study with an electrostatic approach in which a Langmuir film of a phospholipid with anionic polar head groups (PO 4 -) was doped with cationic methylene blue (MB), creating a homogeneous, two-dimensional distribution of dyes in the monolayer. The number of dyes in the probed area of the Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) film coating the Ag nanostructures established a regime in which single-molecule events were observed, with the identification based on direct matching of the observed spectrum at each point of the mapping with a reference spectrum for the MB molecule. In addition, advanced fitting techniques were tested with the data obtained from micro-Raman mapping, thus achieving real-time processing to extract the MB single-molecule spectra. © 2013 Society for Applied Spectroscopy.
