The influence of yttrium oxide, Y2O3, on the microstructure development of the SnO(2)center dot Co(3)O(4)center dot Nb2O5 typical varistor system was studied with scanning (SEM) and transmission (TEM) electron microscopies. The different phases present in the studied samples were characterized through XRD, EDS and selected area diffraction patterns (SAD). Particles of Co2SnO4 were observed with TEM in every sample, whereas clusters of the pyrochlore phase T2Sn2O7 were observed with SEM in samples with 0.05, 0.10 and 0.25 mol% of Y2O3. The higher non-linearity (a = 16) was achieved with the addition of 0.05 mol% of Y2O3. The influence of the secondary phases on the electrical properties is also addressed in this work. The electrical properties of tin oxide varistors doped with CoO, Nb2O5 and Cr2O3, were investigated using the impedance spectroscopy technique with the temperature ranging from 25 to 400 degrees C. The impedance data, represented by means of Nyquist diagrams, show two time constants with different activation energies, one at low frequencies and the other at high frequencies. These activation energies were associated with the adsorption and reaction of O-2 species at the grain boundary interface. The Arrhenius plots show two slopes with a turnover at 200 degrees C for both the higher and lower frequency time constants. This behavior can be related with the decrease of minor charge carrier density. The barrier formation mechanism was associated with the presence of Cr-Sn at the surface, which promotes the adsorption of the O' and O species which are in turn proposed as being responsible for the barrier formation. Ta2O5 doped SnO2 varistor systems containing 0.5 mol% ZnO and 0.5 mol% Coo were prepared by mixed oxide method. Considering that ZnO and Coo oxides are densification additives only the SnO(2)center dot ZnO center dot CoO ceramics cannot exhibit electrical nonlinearity. A small amount of Ta2O5 improves the nonlinear properties of the samples greatly. The height and width of the defect barriers were calculated. It was found that samples doped with 0.05 mol% Ta2O5 exhibit the highest density (98.5%), the lowest electric breakdown field (E-b = 1100 V/cm) and the highest coefficient of nonlinearity (alpha = 11.5). The effect of Ta2O5 dopant could be explained by the substitution of Ta5+ by Sn4+. A grain-boundary defect barrier model for the SnO(2)center dot ZnO center dot CoO center dot Ta2O5 varistor system was also introduced. (c) 2004 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l. In this paper, the calculation of the steady-state operation of a radial/meshed electrical distribution system (EDS) through solving a system of linear equations (non-iterative load flow) is presented. The constant power type demand of the EDS is modeled through linear approximations in terms of real and imaginary parts of the voltage taking into account the typical operating conditions of the EDS's. To illustrate the use of the proposed set of linear equations, a linear model for the optimal power flow with distributed generator is presented. Results using some test and real systems show the excellent performance of the proposed methodology when is compared with conventional methods. © 2011 IEEE.

This paper presents a distribution feeder simulation using VHDL-AMS, considering the standard IEEE 13 node test feeder admitted as an example. In an electronic spreadsheet all calculations are performed in order to develop the modeling in VHDL-AMS. The simulation results are compared in relation to the results from the well knowing MatLab/Simulink environment, in order to verify the feasibility of the VHDL-AMS modeling for a standard electrical distribution feeder, using the software SystemVision™. This paper aims to present the first major developments for a future Real-Time Digital Simulator applied to Electrical Power Distribution Systems. © 2012 IEEE.

Cutting analysis is a important and crucial task task to detect and prevent problems during the petroleum well drilling process. Several studies have been developed for drilling inspection, but none of them takes care about analysing the generated cutting at the vibrating shale shakers. Here we proposed a system to analyse the cutting's concentration at the vibrating shale shakers, which can indicate problems during the petroleum well drilling process, such that the collapse of the well borehole walls. Cutting's images are acquired and sent to the data analysis module, which has as the main goal to extract features and to classify frames according to one of three previously classes of cutting's volume. A collection of supervised classifiers were applied in order to allow comparisons about their accuracy and efficiency. We used the Optimum-Path Forest (OPF), Artificial Neural Network using Multi layer Perceptrons (ANN-MLP), Support Vector Machines (SVM) and a Bayesian Classifier (BC) for this task. The first one outperformed all the remaining classifiers. Recall that we are also the first to introduce the OPF classifier in this field of knowledge. Very good results show the robustness of the proposed system, which can be also integrated with other commonly system (Mud-Logging) in order to improve the last one's efficiency.

The paper describes a novel neural model to electrical load forecasting in transformers. The network acts as identifier of structural features to forecast process. So that output parameters can be estimated and generalized from an input parameter set. The model was trained and assessed through load data extracted from a Brazilian Electric Utility taking into account time, current, tension, active power in the three phases of the system. The results obtained in the simulations show that the developed technique can be used as an alternative tool to become more appropriate for planning of electric power systems.

Economic dispatch (ED) problems have recently been solved by artificial neural network approaches. Systems based on artificial neural networks have high computational rates due to the use of a massive number of simple processing elements and the high degree of connectivity between these elements. The ability of neural networks to realize some complex non-linear function makes them attractive for system optimization. All ED models solved by neural approaches described in the literature fail to represent the transmission system. Therefore, such procedures may calculate dispatch policies, which do not take into account important active power constraints. Another drawback pointed out in the literature is that some of the neural approaches fail to converge efficiently toward feasible equilibrium points. A modified Hopfield approach designed to solve ED problems with transmission system representation is presented in this paper. The transmission system is represented through linear load flow equations and constraints on active power flows. The internal parameters of such modified Hopfield networks are computed using the valid-subspace technique. These parameters guarantee the network convergence to feasible equilibrium points, which represent the solution for the ED problem. Simulation results and a sensitivity analysis involving IEEE 14-bus test system are presented to illustrate efficiency of the proposed approach. (C) 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
