An investigation by optical spectroscopy of the Eu3 + and Er3 + active ions in the crystallized fluorozirconate matrix LaZr2F11 is presented. The D-5(1) --> F-7(0-5) emission lines of Eu3 + are used to extract the F-7(0-5) energy scheme and the observed extinctions permit the deduction of irreducible representations (IRREPS) associated with corresponding sub-levels in the D-2 symmetry. The crystal field analysis was carried out on a 387 x 387 basis set, comprising the F-7, D-5(1,2,3) F-5(1,2), (5)G(1,2,3) and P-3(1,2,3,4,5,6) terms of the Eu-3 (+) 4f(6) configuration. The deviation and rms are 6.8 and 7.9 cm (-1), respectively for 38 levels and ten parameters. The experimental crystal field parameters are in good agreement with the ab-initio ones. Moreover, the relative intensities of the D-5(0) --> F-7(2,3,4) emissions are well reproduced by an 'ab-initio' calculation, except for three lines. The Er3 + ions introduced in LaZr2F11, microcrystals also lie in an unique crystallographic site. A total of 31 energy levels were recorded and the crystal field analysis led to 6.6 and 7.8 cm (-1) for the deviation and rms, respectively, for nine variable parameters taken into account. The experimental CF parameters for Er3 + and Eu3 + are very similar, which seems to show that the host lattice contracts around the smaller Er3 + ion. The informations given by both Eu3 + and Eu3 + optical probes in LaZr2F11 are very consistent with the structure previously determined for the isotypic PrZr2F11 fluoride. (C) 2000 Elsevier B.V. B.V. The modelling of the local structure of sol-gel derived Eu3+-based organic/inorganic hybrids is reported, based on Small-Angle X-ray Scattering (SAXS), photoluminescence and mid-infrared spectroscopy. The hybrid matrix of these organically modified silicates, classed as di-ureasils and termed U(2000) and U(600), is formed by poly( oxyethylene) (POE) chains of variable length grafted to siloxane domains by means of urea cross-linkages. Europium triflate, Eu(CF3SO3)(3), was incorporated in the two di-ureasil matrices with compositions 400 greater than or equal ton greater than or equal to 10, n is the molar ratio of ether oxygens per Eu3+. The SAXS data for undoped hybrids (n=infinity) show the presence of a well-defined peak attributed to the existence of a liquid-like spatial correlation of siloxane rich domains embedded in the polymer matrix and located at the ends of the organic segments. The obtained siloxane particle gyration radius Rg(1) is around 5 Angstrom (error within 10%), whereas the interparticle distance d is 25 +/-2 Angstrom and 40 +/-2 Angstrom, for U(600) and U(2000), respectively. For the Eu3+-based nanocomposites the formation of a two-level hierarchical local structure is discerned. The primary level is constituted by strongly spatially correlated siloxane particles of gyration radius Rg(1) (4-6 and 3-8 Angstrom, errors within 5%, for U(600())n Eu(CF3SO3)(3), 200 greater than or equal ton greater than or equal to 40, and U(2000)(n)Eu(CF3SO3)(3), 400 greater than or equal ton greater than or equal to 40, respectively) forming large clusters of gyration radius Rg(2) (approximate to 75 +/- 10 Angstrom). The local coordination of Eu3+ in both di-ureasil series is described combining the SAXS, photoluminescence and mid-infrared results. In the di-ureasils containing long polymer chains, U(2000)(n)Eu(CF3SO3)(3), the cations interact exclusively with the carbonyl oxygens atoms of the urea bridges at the siloxane-POE interface. In the hybrids containing shorter chains, U(600)(n)Eu(CF3SO3)(3) with n ranging from 200 to 60, the Eu3+ ions interact solely with the ether-type oxygens of the polymer chains. Nevertheless, in this latter family of hybrids a distinct Eu3+ local site environment involving the urea cross-linkages is detected when the europium content is increased up to n=40.

This work reports on the photoluminescent properties of the complex diequatris(thenoyltrifluoroacetonate) europium(III), which was adsorbed or supported on tubes of modified surface silica matrix. The luminescence data and the experimental intensity parameter results evidence the existence of high interactions between the complex [Eu(tta)(3)(H2O)(2)] and the modified surface matrix. The anchored complex on macroporous silica shows higher intensity parameter values suggesting that the Eu-0 bond becomes more covalent than the adsorbed one. Therefore, the hypersensitive character of the D-5(0) --> F-7(2) transition increases evidencing a high contribution of the dynamic coupling mechanism possibly due to highly polarizable chemical environments occupied by europium(III) ion. The lifetimes of the complex on silica matrices were measured. (C) 2001 Elsevier B.V. Ltd. All rights reserved.

Solid state Ln-4-Me-BP compounds, where Ln stands for lighter trivalent lanthanides (lanthanum to europium) and 4-Me-BP is 4-methylbenzylidenepyruvate, have been synthesized. Elemental analysis, complexometry, X-ray powder diffractometry, infrared spectroscopy and simultaneous thermogravimetry-differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA), have been used to characterize and to study the thermal behaviour of these compounds. The results provided information concerning the stoichiometry, crystallinity, thermal stability and thermal decomposition. (C) 2002 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

The aggregation, gelation, and aging of urea-cross-linked siloxane-poly(oxyethylene) nanohybrids [(U600)-n] containing two different amounts of europium triflate initially dissolved in an ethanol-water mixture were investigated by in situ small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). For both low (n = [O]/[Eu] = 80) and high (n = 25) europium contents, the SAXS intensity was attributed to the formation of siloxane clusters of about 8-11 Angstrom in size. Siloxane cluster formation and growth is a rapid process in hybrids with low Eu contents and slow in Eu-rich hybrids. An additional contribution to the scattering intensity at very low angles was attributed to the formation of a coarse structure level. At this secondary level, the structure can be described as a set of dense domains containing siloxane clusters embedded in a depleted matrix composed of unfolded polymer chains and solvent. By fitting a theoretical function for this model to the experimental SAXS curves, relevant structural parameters were determined as functions of time during the sol-gel transition and gel aging. For hybrids with low europium contents (n = 80), the size of the siloxane clusters remains essentially invariant, whereas the dense segregation domains progressively grow. In hybrids with high doping contents (n = 25), the preponderant structure variation during the first stages of the sol-gel transformation is the slow growth of siloxane clusters. For these hybrids, the segregation of siloxane clusters forming dense domains occurs only during advanced stages of the process.

Nanocrystallized boehmite gamma-AlOOH center dot nH(2)O had been synthesized by spray-drying (SD) of a solution of aluminium tri-sec-butoxide peptized by nitric acid. The sub-micronic spherical particles obtained had an average diameter of 500 nm and were built of 100 nm or less platelet-like sub-particles. The average crystallite size calculated from XRD was 1.6 nm following the b axis (i.e. one unit cell) and 3-4 nm perpendicular to b. As a result of the nanometric sizes of crystallites, there was a large surface free for water adsorption and it was found to be n = 1.18 +/- 0.24H(2)O per AlOOH. The SD spheres spontaneously dispersed in water at room temperature and formed stable-over months-suspensions with nanometre-size particles (25-85 nm). Luminescent europium-doped nanocrystallized boehmites AlOOH: Eu (Al0.98Eu0.02OOH center dot nH(2)O) were synthesized the same way by SD and demonstrated the same crystallization properties and morphologies as the undoped powders. It is inferred from the Eu3+ luminescence spectroscopy that partly hydrated europium species are immobilized on the boehmite nanocrystals where they are directly bonded to alpha(OH) groups of the AlOOH surface. The europium coordination is schematically written [Eu3+(OH)(alpha)(H2O)(7-alpha/2)]. The europium-doped boehmite from SD spontaneously dispersed in water: the luminescence spectroscopy proves that most of the Eu3+ ions were detached from the NPs during water dispersion. The AlOOH: Eu nanoparticles were modified by the amine acid asparagine (ASN). The modification aimed to render the NPs compatible for further bio-functionalization. After surface modification, the NPs easily dispersed in water; the luminescence spectra after dispersion prove that the Eu3+ ions were held at the boehmite surface.

Yttrium-aluminum oxides are interesting compounds and they have been extensively used as host for lasers and phosphors, due to their stable physical and chemical properties. The fabrication of yttrium-aluminum garnet (YAG) has been investigated thoroughly. Single-crystal YAG is expensive and to produce it a new way has been investigated. This process consists of modifying the methodology of reagents mixture and the process of heating them. The microwave irradiation is used to heat-treat the oxide mixture. The traditional synthesis of YAG powders occurs through the reaction of aluminum and yttrium powders at high temperatures. With this work we investigated the preparation of YAG by non-hydrolytic sol-gel route as an alternative methodology to obtain yttrium-aluminum matrix from inorganic precursors (yttrium and aluminum chloride). The preparation of the gel was carried out in an oven-dried glassware. The AlCl3, YCl3 and ethanol were reacted in reflux under argon atmosphere. Europium III chloride was added as a structural probe. The powder was dried and heat-treated in modified microwaves. The samples were pre-treated at 50 and 800 C during I h and then heated in microwaves for 30 s, 2 and 4 min. The formation process and structure of the powders were studied by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), photoluminescence (PL) and transmission electronic microscopy (TEM). XRD presents only picks corresponding to the YAG phase and confirmed by TEM. PL date showed that the YAG phase was formed in 2 min with the samples pre-treated at 50 C. For the samples pretreated at 800 degrees C, the YAG phase appears in 30s. The excitation spectra present a maximum of 394 nm corresponding to the L-5(6) level and emission spectra of Eu III ion present bands characteristic transitions arising from the D-5(0) -> F-7(J) (J= 1, 2, 3, 4) monifolds excited at their maximum. The magnetic dipole D-5(0) -> F-7(1) transition presents more intensity than the electric dipole D-5(0) -> F-7(2) transition. This methodology showed efficiency in obtaining YAG phase. EXAFS, SAXS and Eu3+ luminescence spectroscopy of sol-gel derived siloxane-polyethyleneoxide hybrids
Resumo:
Hybrid Eu3+-doped silica-poliethyleneoxide (PEO) nanocomposites with covalent bonds between the inorganic (siloxane) and organic (PEO) phases have been obtained by sol-gel process. These materials are transparent, flexible and present high Eu3+ luminescence output. Their luminescence properties, local environment around europium ions and structure have been investigated as a function of europium content. EXAFS measurements indicate that the increase in Eu-doping induces a decrease in Eu3+ coordination number. An increase in symmetry degree around the metal ion is also observed for increasing Eu3+ concentration, while non radiative decay paths from the D-5(0) excited state become more important. SAXS results suggest the preferential interaction of europium ions with ether-type oxygens of the polymer chains. However, the existence of interactions between the cations and the carbonyl groups from urea bridges located at the siloxane-PEO interface can not be excluded.

This work reports on the luminescence spectroscopy sensitivity in the determination of the phase purity in gadolinium compounds using Eu3+ as a probe. Cubic Gd2O3 and hexagonal Gd2O2S doped with Eu3+ spherical fine particles were obtained from doped gadolinium basic carbonates with morphological control and were also characterized by IR and XRD. Doped samples present Eu3+ characteristic transitions, with specific energy positions related to each phase. Emission and excitation spectra patterns were established for oxide and oxysulfide compounds, then oxysulfate and oxide impurities generated during oxysulfide preparation were monitored. From emission spectra some experimental intensity parameters were also calculated. All spectroscopic results reflect the presence or not of impurities in all compounds. (C) 2001 Elsevier B.V. Ltd. This work reports on the preparation of Gd2O3, cubic system, with spherical particles, narrow size distribution, whether or not doped with 1-5 at.% of Eu3+ and the influence of Eu3+ concentration on optical and morphological properties. Average diameter and size distribution particle analyses were performed for all samples from SEM results. Doped samples were also investigated by luminescence spectroscopy and emission kinetic measurements. All oxide samples present a particle average diameter distribution range from 110 to 150 nm and a decrease of particle average diameter with the presence of Eu3+. The particle size decrease is almost the same for all samples with different doping ion concentration. Therefore, the presence of doping ion may be inhibiting particle growth after the nucleation process. From spectroscopic studies, the doping ion distribution in the surface of oxide samples can be considered homogeneous because concentration quenching is not observed, as well as a significant difference among the calculated lifetime for each sample. Undoped and Eu3+ doped monohydrate strontium oxalate samples were precipitated under ultrasound and conventional stirring and were heated at different temperatures. All samples were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XDR), infrared spectra (IR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Monohydrate, dehydrate oxalates and carbonate particles are ellipsoids indicating a topotatic process. Particle size decrease is observed when ultrasound stirring and europium. doping are used and rehydration of strontium oxalate results in uniform hexagonal particle shape. An oxide and carbonate mixture is obtained from oxalates treated at 1050 degreesC and its suspension in water undergoes incomplete hydrolysis. The products from this incomplete hydrolysis present dendrite shape particles only when the former is precipitated under ultrasound stirring. In this process, surface energy is important for particle dispersion and ultrasound supplies activation energy to oxalate precursor. (C) 2001 Elsevier B.V. Ltd. All rights reserved.

A structure modeling of two families of sol-gel derived Eu3+-doped organic/inorganic hybrids based on the results of small-angle X-ray scattering experiments is reported. The materials are composed of poly(oxyethylene) chains grafted at one or both ends to siloxane groups and are called mono- and di-urethanesils, respectively. A theoretical function corresponding to a two-level hierarchical structure model fits well the experimental Scattering curves. The first level corresponds to small siloxane clusters embedded in a polymeric matrix. The secondary level is associated to the existence of siloxane cluster rich domains surrounded by a cluster-depleted polymeric matrix. Results show that increasing europium doping favors the growth of the secondary domains. (C) 2002 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

Organic-inorganic hybrids, named di-ureasils and described by polyether-based chains grafted to both ends to a siliceous backbone through urea cross linkages, were used as hosts for incorporation of the well-known coordination complex of trivalent europium (Eu3+) ions described by the formula [Eu(TTA)(3)(H2O)(2)] (where TTA stands for thenoyltrifluoroacetone). By comparing with Eu3+-doped di-ureasil without complex form the new materials prepared here enhanced the quantum efficiency for photoemission of Eu3+ ions. The enhancement can be explained by the coordination ability of the organic counterpart of the host structure which is strong enough to displace water molecules in [Eu(TTA)(3)(H2O)(2)] from the rare earth neighbourhood after the incorporation process. High intensity of Eu3+ emission was observed with a low non-radiative decay rate under ultraviolet excitation. The quantum efficiency calculated from the decay of D-5(0) emission was 74%, which in the same range of values previously obtained for the most efficient Eu3+ coordination compounds reported in literature. Luminescence, X-ray absorption and infrared absorption results considered together leads to a picture where the first coordination shell of Eu3+ is composed of the 6 oxygen atoms of the 3 beta-diketonate ligands and 2 ether-like oxygen atoms of the host. The preparation and characterization of new Eu3+ doped polyphosphate-aminosilane hybrids xerogels is reported. Eu3+ D-5(0) emission quantum efficiency ranges from 0.41 to 0.54 depending on the SUP ratio. These rather high values are due to the substitution of phosphate and amino groups for water in the Eu3+ coordination shell. Raman and Si-29 and C-13 CP-MAS NMR results suggest that no strong interaction exists between the polyphosphate and the siloxane parts. Not fully condensed siloxane colloidal domains seem to be homogeneously distributed in the polyphosphate network. Good optical quality and favorable Eu3+ spectroscopic characteristics suggest these new hybrids as good hosts for lanthanide ions in optical devices. (C) 2003 Published by Elsevier B.V.
