A measurement is presented of the ZZ production cross section in the ZZ -> 2l2l' decay mode with l = e, mu and l' = e, mu, tau in proton-proton collisions at root s = 7 TeV with the CMS experiment at the LHC. Results are based on data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.0 fb(-1). The measured cross section sigma(pp -> ZZ) = 6.24(-080)(+0.86) (stat.)(-0.32)(+0.41) (syst.) +/- 0.14 (lumi.) pb is consistent with the standard model predictions. The following limits on ZZZ and ZZ-gamma anomalous trilinear gauge couplings are set at 95% confidence level: -0.011 < f(4)(Z) < 0.012, -0.012 < f(5)(Z) < 0.012, -0.013 < f(4)(gamma) < 0.015, and -0.014 < f(5)(gamma) < 0.014.

We present results of ultrasonic measurements on a single crystal of the distorted diamond-chain compound azurite Cu-3(CO3)(2)(OH)(2). Pronounced elastic anomalies are observed in the temperature dependence of the longitudinal elastic mode c(22) which can be assigned to the relevant magnetic interactions in the system and their couplings to the lattice degrees of freedom. From a semiquantitative analysis of the magnetic contribution to c(22) the magnetoelastic coupling G = partial derivative J(2)/partial derivative epsilon(b) can be estimated, where J(2) is the intradimer coupling constant and epsilon(b) the strain along the intrachain b axis. We find an exceptionally large coupling constant of | G| similar to 3650 K highlighting an extraordinarily strong sensitivity of J(2) against changes of the b-axis lattice parameter. These results are complemented by measurements of the hydrostatic pressure dependence of J2 by means of thermal expansion and magnetic susceptibility measurements performed both at ambient and finite hydrostatic pressure. We propose that a structural peculiarity of this compound, in which Cu2O6 dimer units are incorporated in an unusually stretched manner, is responsible for the anomalously large magnetoelastic coupling.

We study the production of gauge-boson pairs at the next generation of linear e+e- colliders operating in the eγ mode. The processes eγ → VV′F (V,V′ = W,Z, or γ and F = e or ν) can give valuable information on possible deviations of the quartic vector-boson couplings from the Standard Model predictions. We establish the range of the new couplings that can be explored in these colliders based on a 3σ effect in the total cross section. We also present several kinematical distributions of the final state particles that could manifest the underlying new dynamics. Our results show that an eγ collider can extend considerably the bounds on anomalous interactions coming from oblique radiative corrections and from direct searches in e+e- colliders.

In this work we address contributions from scalars to (g-2)μ. In order to explain the recently measured deviation by the BNL experiment on (g-2)μ, it is necessary that these scalars are either light or couple strongly with muons. Here we explore this last possibility. We show that a scalar with mass of the order of 102 GeV provides significant contribution to (g-2)μ if the Yukawa coupling is about 10-1. We suggest scenarios where this comes about naturally. ©2001 The American Physical Society.
