The use of an effective surface charge density has allowed the Gouy-Chapman (CC) theory to explain surface potential isotherms of Langmuir monolayers of dioctadecyldimethylammonium bromide (DODAB). The effective surface charge density of DODAB monolayer increases with the electronegativity of the counterions in the subphase. The pressure-area isotherms indicate a very condensed monolayer for DODAB spread on an I--containing subphase, which exhibits the lowest surface charge density, whereas the monolayer on a F-containing subphase is extremely expanded owing to the high surface charge density or electrostatic repulsion between headgroups. The Dirac equation is exactly solved for a pseudoscalar linear plus Coulomb-like potential in a two-dimensional world. This sort of potential gives rise to an effective quadratic plus inversely quadratic potential in a Sturm-Liouville problem, regardless the sign of the parameter of the linear potential, in sharp contrast with the Schrodinger case. The generalized Dirac oscillator already analyzed in a previous work is obtained as a particular case. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We present a different class of quantum-mechanical potentials. These are midway between the exactly solvable potentials and the quasiexactly ones. Their fundamental feature is that one can find the entire s-wave spectrum of a given potential, provided that some of its parameters are conveniently fixed. © 1993 The American Physical Society.

The Green's functions of the recently discovered conditionally exactly solvable potentials are computed. This is done through the use of a second-order differential realization of the so(2,1) Lie algebra. So we present the dynamical symmetry underlying the solvability of such potentials and show that they belong to a general class of solvable and partially solvable potentials. © 1994 The American Physical Society.

Recently a class of quantum-mechanical potentials was presented that is characterized by the fact that they are exactly solvable only when some of their parameters are fixed to a convenient value, so they were christened as conditionally exactly solvable potentials. Here we intend to expand this class by introducing examples in two dimensions. As a byproduct of our search, we found also another exactly solvable potential. © 1994 The American Physical Society.

The Paraná Basin is a Western Gondwanan cratonic basin that is better defined as the Paraná depositional site, since it has a diverse history as a basin. Sedimentation started in the Ordovician-Silurian, followed by extensive marine Devonian deposition. A Late Paleozoic/ Triassic facies cycle wedge was clearly built during Pangean time. The Early Cretaceous was characterized by extensive basaltic lava flows immediately before the break-up of Pangea. Following these rifting and drifting processes, the basin's structural framework was totally rebuilt, generating new depositional sites in the Late Cretaceous to Tertiary. Based on more recent data, at least two different basins may be defined during the evolution of what was once considered a unique basin. Nevertheless, even if considered as a single basin, the sedimentary pile of the Paraná Basin has considerable economic potential, until now exploited only rudimentarily, except for its groundwater resources. Aggregates, limestones, clays, industrial sands, gems, dimension stones, hydrocarbons, coal, peat, and uranium are some of the potential mineral resources of this basin. Copyright © 1997 by V. H. The hyperspherical adiabatic approach is used to obtain the highly excited series 1sns 1S e and 1s(n + 1)p 1P o of the helium atom. The introduction of appropriate asymptotic conditions at large values of the hyperspherical radius results in a stable algorithm that allows the calculation of the full atomic spectrum with precision of a few parts per million. Comparison with the variational calculations available in the literature shows that the accuracy of the results improves with increasing principal quantum number. We present the energies up to n = 31 which is the typical value used in multiphoton excitation experiments.

Classical Monte Carlo calculations have been performed in order to investigate the ability of the TIP4P, SPC, and SPCE water models to reproduce the structural features of liquid water. The simulations were carried out in the NPT ensemble at 4 thermodynamic conditions. The results are compared with recent neutron diffraction data. Essentially, the three models capture equally well the thermodynamic and structural features of water. Although they were parametrized to reproduce the water properties at ambient conditions, the agreement with the experimental pair correlation functions was even better at supercritical conditions. This is because the effective pair potentials have some difficulty to reproduce cooperative interactions, like hydrogen bonds. These interactions are less effective at supercritical conditions, where the liquid behaves roughly like a gas.

There is controversy over how hormonal conditions influence cerebral physiology. We studied pattern-shift visual evoked potentials (PS-VEP), brain stem auditory evoked potentials (BAEP) and short-latency somatosensory evoked potentials (SSEV) in 20 female volunteers at different phases of the menstrual cycle (estrogen phase, ovulatory day and progesterone phase). Statistical analysis showed decreased latencies for P 100 (PS-VEP), N 19and P 22 (SSEV) waves in the progesterone phase compared with the estrogen phase. There was no significant difference between the estrogen and the ovulation day values. Comparing the three above stages, there were no significant differences in the brainstem auditory evoked potentials. The reduction of the latencies of the potentials generated in multisynaptic circuits provides the first consistent neurophysiological basis for a tentative comprehension of human pre-menstrual syndrome.

We discuss the relationship between exact solvability of the Schroedinger equation, due to a spatially dependent mass, and the ordering ambiguity. Some examples show that, even in this case, one can find exact solutions. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that operators with linear dependence on the momentum are nonambiguous. Exact solutions are found for the Dirac equation for a combination of Lorentz scalar and vector Coulombic potentials with additional non-Coulombic parts. An appropriate linear combination of Lorentz scalar and vector non-Coulombic potentials, with the scalar part dominating, can be chosen to give exact analytic Dirac wave functions. The method works for the ground state or for the lowest orbital state with l = j - 1/2 , for any j.

Studies of the effect of ethanol on human visual evoked potentials are rare and usually involve chronic alcoholic patients. The effect of acute ethanol ingestion has seldom been investigated. We have studied the effect of acute alcoholic poisoning on pattern-reversal visual evoked potentials (PR-VEP) and flash light visual evoked potentials (F-VEP) in 20 normal volunteers. We observed different effects with ethanol: statistically significant prolonged latencies of F-VEP after ingestion, and no significant differences in the latencies of the PR-VEP components. We hypothesize a selective ethanol effect on the afferent transmission of rods, mainly dependent on GABA and glutamatergic neurotransmission, influencing F-VEP latencies, and no effect on cone afferent transmission, as alcohol doesn't influence PR-VEP latencies.

A general form for ladder operators is used to construct a method to solve bound-state Schrödinger equations. The characteristics of supersymmetry and shape invariance of the system are the start point of the approach. To show the elegance and the utility of the method we use it to obtain energy spectra and eigenfunctions for the one-dimensional harmonic oscillator and Morse potentials and for the radial harmonic oscillator and Coulomb potentials.

This comment criticizes the recently published approach of Alhaidari for solving relativistic problems. It is shown that his gauge considerations are inaccurate and that the class of exactly solvable relativistic problems is not as large as the author claims.

We explore regions of parameter space in a simple exponential model of the form V = V0 e-λ(Q/Mp) that are allowed by observational constraints. We find that the level of fine tuning in these models is not different from more sophisticated models of dark energy. We study a transient regime where the parameter λ has to be less than √3 and the fixed point ΩQ = 1 has not been reached. All values of the parameter λ that lead to this transient regime are permitted. We also point out that this model can accelerate the universe today even for λ > √2, leading to a halt of the present acceleration of the universe in the future thus avoiding the horizon problem. We conclude that this model can not be discarded by current observations. © SISSA/ISAS 2002.
