Based on the concept that horses have balanced symmetry between its anatomical regions, the aim of this study was to introduce a method of assessing the balance of equines through body proportions. Altogether twelve linear measurements, using metric tape, were measured in 234 horses Quarter Horses for evidence of barrel racing. From these measurements were built nine body proportions, each one given by the ratio of two specific measures, and the effects of sex, weight, age and degree of blood on the balance were evaluated. To check the significance tests we used the F statistic, considering P<0.05. It was found that the linear measurements ML2, ML3 and ML5 were mainly responsible for the disproportionality of the horses evaluated. The effect of sex was significant (P<0.05) for four proportions (R1, R3, R4 and R9) and females were more distant from the concept of balance than males.

Does disturbance affect bud bank size and belowground structures diversity in Brazilian subtropical grasslands?

Brazilian Campos grasslands are ecosystems under high frequency of disturbance by grazing and fires. Absence of such disturbances may lead to shrub encroachment and loss of plant diversity. Vegetation regeneration after disturbance in these grasslands occurs mostly by resprouting from belowground structures. We analyzed the importance of bud bank and belowground bud bearing organs in Campos grasslands. We hypothesize that the longer the intervals between disturbances are, the smaller the size of the bud bank is. Additionally, diversity and frequency of belowground organs should also decrease in areas without disturbance for many years. We sampled 20 soil cores from areas under different types of disturbance: grazed, exclusion from disturbance for two, six, 15 and 30 years. Belowground biomass was sorted for different growth forms and types of bud bearing organs. We found a decrease in bud bank size with longer disturbance intervals. Forbs showed the most drastic decrease in bud bank size in the absence of disturbance, which indicates that they are very sensitive to changes in disturbance regimes. Xylopodia (woody gemmiferous belowground organs with hypocotyl-root origin) were typical for areas under influence of recurrent fires. The diversity of belowground bud bearing structures decreased in the absence of disturbance. Longer intervals between disturbance events, resulting in decrease of bud bank size and heterogeneity of belowground organs may lead to the decline and even disappearance of species that relay on resprouting from the bud bank upon disturbance. Genetic parameters for earnings in Quarter Horse

In this study, we estimated the heritability (h(2)) of earnings in the Quarter Horse in order to evaluate the inclusion of this trait in breeding programs. Records from 14,754 races of 2443 horses from 1978-2009 were provided by Sorocaba Hippodrome, Sao Paulo, Brazil. All ancestors of the registered horses were included in the pedigree file until the 4th generation. Log-transformed performance measures (LPM) were analyzed for animals aged 2, 3, and 4 years and during their entire career. The h(2) estimates were obtained using a multi-trait model and Gibbs sampling that included the effects of sex, year of race, and animal in all analyses. Five analyses were performed: 1 in which LPM was divided by the number of prizes, 1 in which LPM was divided by the number of race starts, and 3 analyses that included the number of prizes, number of race starts, and both (LPM_cNPS) as covariates. Analysis was performed with and without inclusion of the maternal effect. Models were compared based on the deviance information criterion and LPM_cNPS including maternal effects was found to be the best model. The h(2) estimates and standard deviation obtained using model LPM_cNPS were 0.19 +/- 0.08, 0.21 +/- 0.08, 0.22 +/- 0.09, and 0.21 +/- 0.07 for earnings at 2, 3, and 4 years of age and total career, respectively. Our analyses indicate that earnings are subject to selection and can be included in breeding programs to improve the racing performance of Quarter Horses.

Proteção de motores elétricos de grande porte

Large electric motors require greater care when driving, especially during continuous operation since they are part of day-to-day manufacturing sector, acting essentially to ensure that no damage occurs to the production process and equipment that are part of the same system. This work includes the analysis of electrical protection in a system comprised of a three phase induction motor driven by a frequency converter as well as an analysis of the functions of a multifunction electronic relay. It is presented a comparison between the existing functions in a converter and a relay and a real case is described in order to exemplify the use of an electric motor and features that are aimed at their protection, and the system in which it is inserted. Based on the results, it is of great importance in this field of performance studies, generating relevant results, which may be exposed in order to unify into a single document, different sources of information that are arranged randomly, improve utilization motor and extend the life of equipment forming part of the electrical installation

São Paulo 2012: Um sonho, um projeto, uma visão

Millennia ago, through the myths of greeks gods and demi-gods, comes a series of celebrations called Pan-Hellenic Games. Among these festivals, the most famous was certainly the Olympic Games - the Olympics. Forbidden by Rome in the third century AD, they are considered to worship the pagan gods, were rescued in 1894 by Pierre de Coubertin. Over 113 years and 29 Olympiads, the event took gigantic proportions and the right to host the Games has become one of the closest racing of the modern world. Catalyst for urban development, the Olympic Games were the subject of dream for the city of Sao Paulo in the 2000’s, and an internal dispute was fought with Rio de Janeiro to get the right to host the 2012 Games. A team of Paulo Mendes da Rocha and associates was responsible for designing the plan. Eliminated from contention, Sao Paulo forgot the Olympic dream, and in October 2009 the city of Rio was finally chosen to host the Olympics in 2016. This project aims to rescue the look of architectural and urban plan Sao Paulo 2012 and with a critical and poetic eye create a visual identity for a fictitious victory in the election of São Paulo in 2003. Not aiming to create a corporate identity program - because this is not the mission of the architect - but look at Sao Paulo and the Olympics with poetry and criticism in the true Olympic spirit of peace and hope.
