We report on spectral redistribution of the photoluminescence (PL) emission from the edge of thin-film planar waveguides of the conjugated polymer BEH-PPV [Poly(2,5-bis(2'-ethyl-hexyl)-1,4-phenylenevinylene] induced by self-absorption in the polymer film. The PL spectra present drastic changes and displace to longer wavelengths with increasing self-absorption. We observe an enhancement of the absolute PL intensity at longer wavelengths, which was interpreted as due to re-emission of self-absorbed photons. The significant efficiency for the PL re-emission suggests the use of self-absorption as a mechanism for tuning the emission into the near infrared.

This work presents studies of GeO2-PbO thin films deposited by RF Sputtering for fabrication of rib-waveguide. GeO2-PbO vitreous targets were prepared melting the reagents in alumina crucible. Thin films were deposited at room temperature using pure Ar plasma, at 5 mTorr pressure and RF power of 40 W on substrates of (100) silicon wafers. Rutherford Backscattering Spectroscopy (RBS) analyses were employed for the determination of the chemical elements present in the GeO2-PbO film. Geometry and sidewall of the waveguides were investigated by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The mode propagation in the waveguide structure of GeO2-PbO thin films was analyzed using an integrated optic simulation software to obtain a monomode propagation. © The Electrochemical Society.

Oxygen-deficient TiO2 films with enhanced visible and near-infrared optical absorption have been deposited by reactive sputtering using a planar diode radio frequency magnetron configuration. It is observed that the increase in the absorption coefficient is more effective when the O-2 gas supply is periodically interrupted rather than by a decrease of the partial O-2 gas pressure in the deposition plasma. The optical absorption coefficient at 1.5 eV increases from about 1 x 10(2) cm(-1) to more than 4 x 10(3) cm(-1) as a result of the gas flow discontinuity. A red-shift of similar to 0.24 eV in the optical absorption edge is also observed. High resolution transmission electron microscopy with composition analysis shows that the films present a dense columnar morphology, with estimated mean column width of 40nm. Moreover, the interruptions of the O-2 gas flow do not produce detectable variations in the film composition along its growing direction. X-ray diffraction and micro-Raman experiments indicate the presence of the TiO2 anatase, rutile, and brookite phases. The anatase phase is dominant, with a slight increment of the rutile and brookite phases in films deposited under discontinued O-2 gas flow. The increase of optical absorption in the visible and near-infrared regions has been attributed to a high density of defects in the TiO2 films, which is consistent with density functional theory calculations that place oxygen-related vacancy states in the upper third of the optical bandgap. The electronic structure calculation results, along with the adopted deposition method and experimental data, have been used to propose a mechanism to explain the formation of the observed oxygen-related defects in TiO2 thin films. The observed increase in sub-bandgap absorption and the modeling of the corresponding changes in the electronic structure are potentially useful concerning the optimization of efficiency of the photocatalytic activity and the magnetic doping of TiO2 films. We propose a modification of standard linear electrodynamics in four dimensions, where effective non-trivial interactions of the electromagnetic field with itself and with matter fields induce Lorentz violating Chern-Simons terms. This yields two consequences: it provides a more realistic and general scenario for the breakdown of Lorentz symmetry in electromagnetism and it may explain the effective behavior of the electromagnetic field in certain planar phenomena (for instance, Hall effect). A number of proposals for non-linear electrodynamics is discussed along the paper. Important physical implications of the breaking of Lorentz symmetry, such as optical birefringence and the possibility of having conductance in the vacuum are commented on.

Eu3+ and Tm3+ doped lanthanum fluoride and lanthanum oxyfluoride are obtained from Eu3+, Tm3+ containing lanthanum fluoracetate solutions. The nature of the crystal phase obtained could be controlled by the temperature of heat treatment. Spectral characteristics of Eu3+ doped crystal phases were sufficiently different to allow utilization of Eu3+ as structural probes. Tm3+ emission at the technologically important spectral region of 1450nm could be observed for the fluoride and oxyfluoride crystal phases. The large bandwidth obtained (around 120nm) suggests potential applications in optical amplification. SiO2-LaF3-LaOF composite materials were also prepared. It is observed that for heat treatments above 800degreesC, fluorine loss, probably in the form of SiF4 hinder the observation of Tm3+ emission. Eu3+ spectroscopic characteristics clearly show the evolution of a fluoride like environment to an amorphous oxide one as the temperature of heat treatment increased. Thin films obtained by dip-coating on V-SiO2 substrates and treated at 300degreesC, 500degreesC and 800degreesC display guided modes in the visible and infrared regions. Optical characteristics (refractive index and films thickness) were obtained at 543.5, 632.8 and 1550nm. Attenuation as low as 1.8dB/cm was measured at 632.8nm. (C) 2004 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Organic-inorganic hybrids containing methacrylic acid (McOH, CH(2)= C(CH(3))COOH)) modified zirconium tetrapropoxide, Zr(OPr(n))(4), classed as di-ureasil-zirconium oxo-cluster hybrids, have been prepared and structurally characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and Raman (FT-Raman) spectroscopies, Si and C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and atomic force microscopy (AFM). XRD and SAXS results have pointed out the presence of Si- and Zr-based nanobuilding blocks (NBBs) dispersed into the organic phase. Inter-NBBs correlation distances have been estimated for the pure di-ureasil and a model compound obtained. by hydrolysis/condensation of Zr(OPr(n))(4):McOH (molar ratio 1: 1): d(Si) approximate to 26 +/- 1 angstrom and d(Zr) approximate to 16 +/- 1 angstrom, respectively. In the case of the di-ureasil-zirconium oxo-cluster hybrids, these distances depend on the Zr relative molar percentage (rel. mol. Zr %) (d(Si) ranges from 18 to 25 angstrom and d(Zr) from 14 to 23 angstrom, as the rel. mol. Zr % increases from 5 to 75), suggesting that the Si- and Zr-based clusters are interconstrained. Complementary data from FT-IR, FT-Raman, (29)Si and (13)C NMR, and AFM support to a structural model where McOH-modified Zr-based NBBs (Zr-OMc) are present over the whole range of composition. At low Zr-OMc contents (rel. mol. Zr % <30) the clusters are well-dispersed within the di-ureasil host, whereas segregation occurs at the 0.1 mu m scale at high Zr-OMc concentration (rel. mol. Zr % = 50). No Zr-O-Si heterocondensation has been discerned. Monomode waveguides, diffractions gratings, and Fabry-Perot cavities have been written through the exposure of the hybrid monoliths to UV light. FT-Raman has shown that the chemical process that takes place under illumination is the polymerization of the methacrylate groups of the Zr-OMc NBBs. The guidance region in patterned channels is a Gaussian section located below the exposed surface with typical dimensions of 320 mu m wide and 88 mu m deep. The effective refractive index is 1.5162 (maximum index contrast on the order of 1 x 10(-4)) and the reflection coeficient of the Fabry-Perot cavity (formed by a grating patterned into a 0.278 cm channel) is 0.042 with a free spectral range value of 35.6 GHz.

This work presents for the first time to our knowledge the fabrication and characterization of rib waveguides produced with PbO-GeO2 (PGO) thin films. The target was manufactured using pure oxides ( 60 PbO-40 GeO2, in wt%) and amorphous thin films were produced with the RF sputtering technique. PGO thin films present small absorption in the visible and in the near infrared and refractive index of similar to 2.0. The definition of the rib waveguide structure was made using conventional optical lithography followed by plasma etching, performed in a Reactive Ion Etching (RIE) reactor. Light propagation mode in the waveguide structure was analyzed using integrated optic simulation software. Optical loss measurements were performed to determine the propagation loss at 633 nm, for ribs with height of 70 nm and width of 3-5 mu m; experimental values around 2 dB/cm were found for the propagation loss and confirmed the theoretical calculations. The results obtained demonstrate that PGO thin films are potential candidates for application in integrated optics. Published by Elsevier B.V.

Fabrication and optical characterization of Tm3+/Yb3+ codoped PbO-GeO2 (PGO) pedestal-type waveguides are investigated in this work. It is important to mention that, to the best of authors' knowledge, the use of PGO pedestal-type waveguide has not been studied before. PGO thin films codoped with Tm3+ and Yb3+ were obtained through RF magnetron sputtering technique. The pedestal profile was obtained using conventional optical lithography procedures, followed by plasma etching and sputtering deposition. The profile of Tm3+/Yb3+ codoped PGO waveguides was observed by means of Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) measurements. Also the infrared and infrared-to-visible frequency upconversion luminescences of Tm3+ ions were measured exciting the samples with a cw 980 nm diode laser. Propagation losses around 11 dB/cm and 9 dB/cm were obtained at 630 and 1050 nm, respectively, for waveguides in the 20-100 μm width range. Single-mode propagation was observed for waveguides width up to 12 μm and 7 μm, at 1050 nm and 630 nm, respectively; larger waveguides width provided multi-mode propagation. The present results corroborate the possibility of using Tm3+/Yb3+ codoped PGO thin films as active waveguide for photonic applications. © 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We report, for the first time to our knowledge, experimental results on pedestal waveguides produced with Yb3+/Er3+ codoped Bi2O3-WO3-TeO2 thin films deposited by RF Sputtering for photonic applications. Thin films were deposited using Ar/O-2 plasma at 5 mTorr pressure and RF power of 40 W on substrates of silicon wafers. The definition of the pedestal waveguide structure was made using conventional optical lithography followed by plasma etching. Propagation losses around 2.0 dB/cm and 2.5 dB/cm were obtained at 633 and 1050 nm, respectively, for waveguides in the 20-100 mu m width range. Single-mode propagation was measured for waveguides width up to 10 mu m and 12 mu m, at 633 nm and 1050 nm, respectively; for larger waveguides widths multi-mode propagation was obtained. Internal gain of 5.6 dB at 1530 nm, under 980 nm excitation, was measured for 1.5 cm waveguide length (similar to 3.7 dB/cm). The present results show the possibility of using Yb3+/Er3+ codoped Bi2O3-WO3-TeO2 pedestal waveguide for optical amplifiers. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
