The aim of this work was to evaluate the corrosion resistance of AuPdAgIn alloy, submitted to laser beam welding, in 0.9% NaCl solution, using electrochemical techniques. Measures of the open circuit potential (OCP) versus time were applied to electrochemical experiments, as well as potentiodynamic direct scanning (PDS) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) on AuPdAgIn alloy, submitted to laser beam welding in 0.9% NaCl solution. Some differences observed in the microstructure can explain the results obtained for corrosion potential, Ecorr, and corrosion resistance, Rp. EIS spectra have been characterized by distorted capacitive components, presenting linear impedance at low frequencies, including a non-uniform diffusion. The area of the laser weld presented corrosion potential slightly superior when compared to the one of the base metal. The impedance results suggest the best resistant corrosion behavior for laser weld than base metal region. This welding process is a promising alternative to dental prostheses casting.

Objectives: the purpose of this study was to evaluate the surfaces of commercially pure titanium (cpTi) implants surface modified by laser beam (LS), by laser beam associated with sodium silicate deposition (SS) and compare them with surfaces modified by dual-acid etched (AS) and with machined surface (MS). Methods: thirty rabbits received two implants each (one for each tibia). After 30, 60 and 90 days postoperative, the implants were removed by reverse torque for biomechanical analysis and surfaces were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). Results: the mean values of reverse torque at 30, 60 and 90 days postoperative were respectively 24.60, 43.60 e 60.40 N.cm to MS, 43.00, 68.20 e 63.80 N.cm to AS group, 59.80, 76.60 e 78.00 N.cm to LS group and 63.00, 75.40 e 76.60 N.cm to SS group. At 30 days, LS and SS groups showed statistically significant difference (p<0.05) compared to the other groups. At 60 days, LS and SS groups showed statistically significant difference (p<0.05) when compared to MS. Conclusions: it was concluded that SL and SS implants' biomechanical and topographical properties increased bone-implant interaction when compared to the AS and MS implants.

Objective: A morphological and ultra-structural study of copper vapor laser (λ = 510.6 nm) effects on enamel and dentine was performed to show the effects of this radiation. Methods: A total of 15 human molars were cut in half; 15 pieces were separated for irradiation on enamel and 15 for dentine. These two groups were further divided into five experimental groups, including a control group, comprised of three half-sections each, irradiated by a CVL laser with a power of 7 W, a repetition rate of 15,000 pulses/sec and exposed at 500, 600, and 800 msec and 1 sec irradiation times with a 5-sec interval between irradiations. Results: In an ultra-structural SEM exam, we observed that on the enamel surfaces irradiated for 1 sec there was morphological alteration that consisted of catering, flaking, and melting on the surfaces. There was no alteration for the other exposure times. On the dentine teeth irradiated for 1 sec, we observed an evident ultra-structural alteration of melted tissue and loss of morphological characteristics. In the dentine group irradiated by 800 msec, we observed ablation and a partial loss of morphological characteristics. In the dentine groups irradiated by 500 and 600 msec, no alteration was observed. Conclusions: The results showed that irradiation with CVL promoted morphologic changes in the enamel as well as in the dentine and demonstrated a need for future studies in order to establish a safe protocol for further use in the odontological practice.

Objective: The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of Er: YAG laser on the formation of CaF2, after the application of acidulated phosphate fluoride (APF), and its influence on the anti-cariogenic action in human dental enamel. Background Data: Er:YAG laser was designed to promote ablation of the enamel. However, the possibility of using this energy to increase the enamel's resistance to caries has hardly been explored, and neither has its interaction with the use of fluorides. Materials and Methods: One hundred and twenty blocks of enamel were allocated to four groups of 30 blocks each: (1) C, control group; (2) Er:YAG, laser; (3) APF; and (4) Er:YAG+APF. Of these, 80 blocks were submitted to pH cycling for 14 days. In the other 40 blocks, fluoride (CaF2) was measured before cycling. After pH cycling, surface microhardness (SMH), microhardness in cross-section (converted to mineral contents % vol. min.), and fluoride after cycling (40 blocks) were also determined. Results: SMH decreased in all groups. The control group showed the highest decrease, and Er:YAG+APF showed the lowest decrease (p < 0.05). Groups APF and Er:YAG showed the same results (p > 0.05). Mineral content at depths 10, 20, and 40 μm was lower in the control and Er:YAG groups, and higher in groups APF and Er:YAG+APF. CaF2 (μgF/cm2) deposited before pH cycling was higher in the APF group when compared to the Er:YAG+APF group. Control and Er:YAG groups showed the lowest values (p > 0.05). Conclusion: It was concluded that Er:YAG laser influenced the deposition of CaF2 on the enamel and showed a superficial anti-cariogenic action, but not in depth.

It was aimed to evaluate the spectrum and uniformity of droplets in function of sprayers, spraying volumes and rates of chemical insecticide on the mortality of Pseudoplusia includens in laboratory. The work was carried out at UNESP, Jaboticabal, SP, Brazil. The following treatments were applied over the caterpillars: two equipments (atomizer and hydraulic nozzle); two spray volumes (17 and 50 L ha(-1) for the atomizer and 50 and 100 L ha(-1) for the hydraulic nozzle); and two dosages of the insecticide endosulfan (0.5 and 1.0 L pc ha(-1)), in fully randomized plots, in a factorial scheme 2x2x2 and 1 untreated check. The caterpillars mortality was evaluated until the 6(th) day after the application of treatments. The spectrum of the droplets was evaluated in a particle size analyzer in real time determining the diameter and spectrum of droplets sprayed through the laser beam of the analyser. It was verified that the spray volume can be reduced by 17 L ha(-1) without losses on the P. includens control. The doses of 0.5 L pc ha(-1) (recommended for Anticarsia gemmatalis) did not satisfactorily control the caterpillar soybean looper. The atomizer produces droplets of higher uniformity (SPAN: 0.52) and lower percentage of droplets susceptible to drift (3.3%) compared to hydraulic nozzle (SPAN: 1.34 e % droplets <= 100 mu m: 15.2).

Silica-titania planar waveguides of different thicknesses and compositions have been produced by radio-frequency sputtering and dip coating on silica substrates. Waveguides were also produced by silver exchange on a soda-lime silicate glass substrate. Brillouin scattering of the samples has been studied by coupling the exciting laser beam with a prism to different transverse-electric (TE) modes of the waveguides, and collecting the scattered light from the front surface. In multimode waveguides, the spectra depend on the m mode of excitation. For waveguides with a step index profile, two main peaks due to longitudinal phonons are present, apart from the case of the TE0 excitation, where a single peak is observed. The energy separation between the two peaks increases with the mode index. In graded-index waveguides, m-1 peaks of comparable intensities are observed. The spectra are reproduced very well by a model which considers the space distribution of the exciting field in the mode, a simple space dependence of the elasto-optic coefficients, through the value of the refraction index, and neglects the refraction of phonons. A single-fit parameter, i.e., the longitudinal sound velocity, is used to calculate as many spectra as is the number of modes in the waveguide. (C) 2003 American Institute of Physics.

Glassy films of 0.2[Sb(PO3)(3)]-0,8Sb(2)O(3) with 0.8 mum-thickness were deposited on quartz substrates by electron beam evaporation. A contraction in the film thickness (photoinduced decrease in volume) and photobleaching effect associated with a decrease of up to 25% in the index of refraction has been observed in the films after irradiation near the bandgap (3.89 eV), using the 350.7 nm (3.54 eV) Kr+ ion laser line with 2.5 W/cm(2) for 30 min. A loss of 30% in the phosphorus concentration was measured by wavelength dispersive X-ray microanalysis in the film after laser irradiation with 5.0 W/cm(2) for 1.0 h. These photoinduced changes in the samples are dependent on the power density and intensity profile of the laser beam. Using a Lloyd's mirror setup for continuous wave holography it was possible to record holographic gratings with period from 500 nm up to 20 mum and depth profile of similar to50 nm in the films after laser irradiation with 5.0 W/cm(2) for 1 h. Real-time diffraction efficiency measurements have shown that ultraviolet irradiation induces first a refractive index grating formation, and after this, the photocon traction effect takes place generating an irreversible relief grating. Diffraction efficiency up to 10% was achieved for the recorded gratings. 3D-refraction index measurements and atomic force microscopy images are presented. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. A photocontraction effect in amorphous films of the binary glass system 0.20 [Sb(PO3)(3)](n)-0.80 Sb2O3 has been observed after UV irradiation using the 350.7 nm Kr+ ion laser line with 5.0 W/cm(2). Good optical quality films up to 4.0 mum were deposited on silica substrates at room temperature in vacuum by electron beam physical vapor deposition (EB-PVD) and characterized using WDX, XRD, optical absorption, infrared reflectance, profilometry and atomic force microscopy (AFM) techniques. Very stable glasses were prepared by the melt quenching technique and used as evaporation source for the production of films. The photoinduced structural change (PSC) was observed as a variation of about 6% in the film thickness and this effect is accompanied by a photobleaching of the irradiated area with a blue shift of the optical absorption edge. Otherwise this photoinduced change in the film thickness is very sensitive to the variations in the shape and intensity of the laser beam; therefore several possibilities in optical recording arise from these results. Nonlinear absorption and amplification of a probe laser beam can be controlled by adjustment of the intensity-modulation frequency and the wavelength of a pump laser beam. A demonstration of this effect in Er3+-doped fluoroindate glass is presented. The results show maximum amplification of the probe beam (∼12%) when a pump laser emitting 16 mW of power is modulated at ∼30 Hz. In the limit of low modulation frequencies, or cw pumping, induced absorption of the probe beam is the dominant nonlinear process. © 1999 Optical Society of America.
