Low-energy muon-transfer cross sections and rates in collisions of muonic atoms with hydrogen isotopes are calculated using a six-state close-coupling approximation to coordinate-space Faddeev-Hahn-type equations. In the muonic case satisfactory results are obtained for all hydrogen isotopes and the experimentaly observed strong isotopic dependence of transfer rates is also reproduced. A comparison with results of other theoretical and available experimental works is presented. The present model also leads to good transfer cross sections in the well-understood problem of antihydrogen formation in antiproton-positronium collision.

By considering left-right (L-R) asymmetries we study the capabilities of lepton colliders in searching for new exotic vector bosons. Specifically we study the effect of a doubly charged bilepton boson and an extra neutral vector boson appearing in a 3-3-1 model on the L-R asymmetries for the processes e-e- → e-e-, μ-μ- → μ-μ- and e-μ- → e-μ- and show that these asymmetries are very sensitive to these new contributions and that they are in fact powerful tools for discovery of this sort of vector bosons.

For light exotic nuclei modeled as two neutrons n and a core A, we report results for the two-neutron correlation functions and also for the mean-square radii, considering a universal scaling function. The results of our calculations for the neutron-neutron correlation functions are qualitatively consistent with recent data obtained for 11Li and 14Be nuclei. The root-mean-square distance in the halo of such nuclei are also consistent with data, which means that the neutrons of the halo have a large probability to be found outside the interaction range. Therefore the low-energy properties of these halo neutrons are, to a large extend, model independent as long as few physical input scales are fixed. The model is restricted to s-wave subsystems, with small energies for the bound or virtual states. For the radii we are also shown results for the 6He and 20C. All the interaction effects, as higher partial wave in the interaction and/or Pauli blocking effect are, to some extend, included in our model, as long as the three-body binding energy is supplied. © 2005 American Institute of Physics.

We analyze the surface geometry of the spherical even-even Ca, Ni, Sn and Pb nuclei using two approaches: The relativistic Dirac-Hartree-Bogoliubov one with several parameter sets and the non-relativistic Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov one with the Gogny force. The proton and neutron density distributions are fitted to two-parameter Fermi density distributions to obtain the half-density radii and diffuseness parameters. Those parameters allow us to determine the nature of the neutron skins predicted by the models. The calculations are compared with existing experimental data. © 2007 American Institute of Physics.

We present results for spatial distributions of weakly-bound three-body systems, derived from a universal scaling function that depends on the mass ratio of the particles, as well as on the nature of the subsystems. © 2007 American Institute of Physics.

Elaboration of low-losses highly non linear chalcogenide optical fibers for the generation of efficient non linear effects in the infrared remains a challenge. In recent years, much work has been devoted to the study of microstructured optical fibers (MOFs) with different designs and various elaboration processes. Their background losses were typically of several dB/m. © 2011 IEEE.

Melanins are dark, insoluble pigments that are resistant to concentrated acids and bleaching by oxidising agents. Phytomelanin (or phytomelan) is present in the seed coat of some Asparagales and in the fruits of some Compositae. In Compositae fruits, melanin is deposited in the schizogenous spaces between the hypodermis and underlying fibrous layer. Phytomelanin in Compositae is poorly understood, and there are only speculations regarding the cells that produce the pigment and the cellular processes involved in the secretion and polymerisation of phytomelanin. This report describes the cellular processes involved in the secretion of phytomelanin in the pericarp of Praxelis diffusa, a species with a structure typical of the family. The ovaries and fruits at different stages were fixed and processed according to the standard methods of studies of light microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. Hypodermal cells have abundant rough endoplasmic reticulum and mitochondria, and the nuclei have chromatin that is less dense than other cells. These characteristics are typical of cells that synthesise protein/amino acids and suggest no carbohydrate secretion. The fibres, however, have a dense cytoplasm rich in the Golgi bodies that are associated with vesicles and smooth endoplasmic reticulum, common characteristics of carbohydrate secretory cells. Our results indicate that the hypodermal cells are not responsible for the secretion of phytomelanin, as previously described in the literature; in contrast, this function is assigned to the adjacent fibres, which have an organisation typical of cells that secrete carbohydrates. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd.

A search for new exotic particles decaying to the VZ final state is performed, where V is either a W or a Z boson decaying into two overlapping jets and the Z decays into a pair of electrons, muons or neutrinos. The analysis uses a data sample of pp collisions corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5 fb-1 collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC at √s=7 TeV in 2011. No significant excess is observed in the mass distribution of the VZ candidates compared with the background expectation from standard model processes. Model-dependent upper limits at the 95% confidence level are set on the product of the cross section times the branching fraction of hypothetical particles decaying to the VZ final state as a function of mass. Sequential standard model W′ bosons with masses between 700 and 940 GeV are excluded. In the Randall-Sundrum model for graviton resonances with a coupling parameter of 0.05, masses between 750 and 880 GeV are also excluded. © 2013 CERN for the benefit of the CMS collaboration.

Human eyes have a remarkable ability to recognize hundreds of colour shades, which has stimulated the use of colorants, especially for clothing, but toxicological studies have shown that some textile dyes can be hazardous to human health. Under conditions of intense perspiration, dyes can migrate from coloured clothes and penetrate into human skin. Garments made from cotton fabrics are the most common clothing in tropical countries, due to their high temperatures. Aiming to identify safe textile dyes for dyeing cotton fabrics, the genotoxicity [in vitro Comet assay with normal human dermal fibroblasts (NHDF), Tail Intensity] and mutagenicity [Salmonella/microsome preincubation assay (30 min), tester strains TA98, TA100, YG1041 and YG1042] of Reactive Blue 2 (RB2, CAS No. 12236-82-7, C.I. 61211) and Reactive Green 19 (RG19, CAS No. 61931-49-5, C.I. 205075) were evaluated both in the formulated form and as extracted from cotton fibres using different artificial sweats. Both the dyes could migrate from cotton fibres to sweat solutions, the sweat composition and pH being important factors during this extraction. However, the dye sweat solutions showed no genotoxic/mutagenic effects, whereas a weak mutagenic potential was detected by the Ames test for both dyes in their formulated form. These findings emphasize the relevance of textile dyes assessment under conditions that more closely resemble human exposure, in order to recognize any hazard. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. The results of searches for new resonances decaying to a pair of massive vector bosons (WW, WZ, ZZ) are presented. All searches are performed using 5.0 fb-1 of proton-proton collisions, at TeV of center of mass energy, collected by the Compact Muon Solenoid detector at the Large Hadron Collider. No significant excess compared to the standard model background expectation is observed, and upper limits at 95% confidence level are set on the production cross section times the branching fraction of hypothetical particles decaying to a pair of vector bosons. The results are interpreted in the context of several benchmark models, such as the Randall-Sundrum gravitons, the Sequential Standard Model W′, and Technicolor. Graviton resonances in the Randall-Sundrum model with masses smaller than 940 GeV/c2, for coupling parameter k/MPl = 0.05 are excluded. Bulk (ADPS) Randall-Sundrum gravitons with masses smaller than 610 GeV/c2 are excluded, for k/MPl = 0.05. Sequential Standard Model W′ with masses smaller than 1143 GeV/c2 are excluded, as well as ρTC in the 167-687 GeV/c2 mass range, in Low Scale Technicolor models with M(πTC) = 3/4 M(ρTC) - 25 GeV/c2. © 2013 IOP Publishing Ltd.

The microbiological responses of two bivalves species from Tagus estuary, Venerupis pullastra (native clam) and Ruditapes philippinarum (exotic clam) were investigated during 48h of depuration and subsequent simulated transport in semi-dry conditions at two temperatures (4 and 22°C) until reaching 50% lethal time (LT50). Regardless of temperature and species, the maintenance of clams in water for 48h (depuration period) did not affect LT50 during transport. R.philippinarum showed higher survival rates than V.pullastra, always reaching LT50 later, especially at 4°C. Significant differences between clams' species were found in almost all microbiological parameters. This can be related with clams' biological activity and habitat environmental conditions since both clams do not coexist in Tagus estuary. Depuration was efficient to reduce the bacterial load, particularly Escherichia coli, but not efficient to remove Vibrio spp. In both species, the growth of Vibrio spp. was inhibited at 4°C, whereas exponential growth occurred at 22°C. Total viable counts significantly increased in most treatments, while E.coli counts significantly decreased to undetected levels, except for non-depurated R.philippinarum simulated transported at 4°C. Thus, this study highlights the importance of clams depuration for at least 24h in polluted estuarine areas, followed by transport at low temperatures (4°C). © 2013 Elsevier Ltd.
