Adult male rats (n = 5-7 per group) were water deprived for 24 h with only food available. Then they had access to water for 2 h. At the end of the 2 h, 1.5% NaCl was offered to the animals and the intake was measured for another 2 h. The rats drank an average of 9.8 +/- 3.0 ml/120 min of 1.5% NaCl; water intake during this time was negligible (not more than 1.0 ml/120 min). Captopril injected IP at the doses of 12 and 24 mg/kg induced 60-90% inhibition of the intake. Losartan or PD123319 injected ICV induced 50-80% inhibition of the intake. Losartan (80 nmol) inhibited the intake at a lower dose than PD123319 (160 nmol). Neither losartan nor PD123319 inhibited 10% sucrose intake. The inhibition of 1.5% NaCl intake was not related to alterations in arterial pressure. The results show that the antagonism of the renin-angiotensin system inhibits the 1.5% NaCl intake induced by water deprivation. The inhibition induced by the angiotensin II antagonists suggest that this peptide is important for the control of salt intake induced by water deprivation.

We studied the effect of feed and water deprivation on gastrointestinal tract and intestinal mucosa development of chicks at 24, 48, and 72 h posthatching. The treatments were water and feed ad libitum, water ad libitum and no feed, no water but feed ad libitum, and no water and no feed. The relative weight of the yolk sac was not influenced by the treatments. However, at 48 and 72 h posthatching, the relative weight of the liver increased, and the gizzard + proventriculus weight decreased in birds receiving feed ad libitum. An increase in jejunum and ileum relative weights and lengths was observed when the birds were supplied with feed and water. The lack of water produced the same effect as the lack of feed, both causing a higher number of villi per area with reduction in villus size, when compared with feed and water ad libitum treatments. The results of this study revealed that feed and water are able to affect intestinal villus development after hatching, indicating that both feed and water must be supplied to the chicks immediately after hatching.

Water intake was studied in albino rats with lesions in the lateral preoptic area, in the subfornical organ, and in both the lateral preoptic area and the subfornical organ. Drinking was induced by cellular dehydration, hypovolemia, hypotension (isoproterenol or caval ligation), and water deprivation. The animals with lesions in both areas showed a significant reduction in their water intake in response to cellular dehydration. Drinking due to extracellular dehydration was reduced in the animals that received only subfornical organ lesions, and was reduced even further in the animals with both areas ablated. The lesions in the subfornical organ were sufficient to reduce the thirst induced by caval ligation. The lesions in both areas inhibit water intake induced by caval ligation. Water intake induced by deprivation was reduced when both areas were destroyed. These findings demonstrate that both the lateral preoptic area and the subfornical organ are necessary for normal drinking in response to cellular dehydration, hypovolemia, and hypotension. There is further evidence that the lateral preoptic area and subfornical organ interact in the control of water intake induced by a variety of thirst challenges.

The effects of androgenic deprivation induced by castration on the norepinephrine contractile response of vas deferens from rats, which have been submitted to acute swimming-stress were determined. Acute swimming-stress led to subsensitivity to norepinephrine in vas deferens excised from intact rats. Similarly, castration also induced subsensitivity to norepinephrine, but no further subsensitivity occurred in organs from castrated rats submitted to acute stress. The results indicate a different response to norepinephrine in terms of relative responsiveness ratio, when vas deferens was excised from castrated rats or castrated rats submitted to acute stress. It is suggested that androgenic steroids modulate the recovery of homeostasis in rat vas deferens during acute stress, and that this effect may involve mechanisms that affect both the sensitivity of adrenergic receptors and the system of neuronal uptake of catecholamines.

Developing nutritional strategies that can reduce production costs for the fish industry without affecting productive performance is paramount to make the activity sustainable. We investigated if short-term cycles of feed deprivation and refeeding elicit compensatory growth in matrinxa (Brycon amazonicus) juveniles, using three feeding protocols for 60 days (Phase 1): two levels of deprivation (feed deprivation for two days and refeeding for three - D2R3, or four days - D2R4) and a control level (daily feeding). Following, all fish groups were fed daily at satiation for 15 days (Phase 2). At Phase 1, matrinxa achieved full compensatory growth in both deprivation levels by increasing feed intake and feed efficiency. Overall, deprived fish consumed 40% (D2R3) and 36% (D2R4) less feed than fish fed daily. In Phase 2, growth was similar for all fish. Feed intake increased in both deprived fish, but feed efficiency did not differ among groups and was lower than in Phase 1, indicating a reduced efficiency in feed utilization when food was freely available. We propose that intermittent cycles of feeding represent an effective means to reduce production costs. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Sleep-deprived rats exhibit defensive fighting as well as explosive flights very similar to the wild-running of audiogenic seizures. In order to determine why sleep deprivation is a common factor that facilitates both panic and convulsive manifestations, the present study was undertaken to investigate whether rats that display sleep deprivation-induced fighting (SDIF) are the same as those that are susceptible to audiogenic wild-running (WR). Twenty-eight male adult Wistar rats were divided into two groups assigned to two e-sleep deprivation for 5 days and had their SDIF evaluated in social experimental schemes. In the first, 18 subjects were submitted to REM grouping. After 1 week for recovery, their susceptibility to WR was tested in an acoustic stimulation trial ( 104 dB, 200 Hz, 60 S). Rats that did not present WR received a lactate infusion and were tested again by acoustic stimulation 40 min later. In the second experimental scheme, 10 subjects were initially evaluated for WR susceptibility and the number of SDIF was recorded in social grouping after I week. Three categories of WR-susceptibility were determined: WR-sensitive rats, intermediate WR-sensitive rats and WR-insensitive rats. T'he number of SDIF in each category was significantly different and there was a high positive correlation (r=0.89; Spearman test) between the number of SDIF and the level of WR-susceptibility. We conclude that the reasons why sleep deprivation exerts facilitatory effects on both panic and convulsive manifestations are due to overlappings of neural pathways responsible for both behavioral patterns and for the property of sleep deprivation to increase neuronal excitability. GABAergic activation in the lateral parabrachial nucleus (LPBN) induces sodium and water intake in satiated and normovolemic rats. In the present study we investigated the effects of GABA(A) receptor activation in the LPBN on 0.3 M NaCl, water, 2% sucrose and food intake in rats submitted to sodium depletion (treatment with the diuretic furosemide subcutaneously + sodium deficient food for 24 h), 24 h food deprivation or 24 h water deprivation. Male Holtzman rats with bilateral stainless steel cannulas implanted into the LPBN were used. In sodium depleted rats, muscimol (GABA(A) receptor agonist, 0.5 nmol/0.2 mu/l), bilaterally injected into the LPBN, produced an inconsistent increase of water intake and two opposite effects on 0.3 M NaCl intake: an early inhibition (4.3 +/- 2.7 versus saline: 14.4 +/- 1.0 ml/15 min) and a late facilitation (37.6 +/- 2.7 versus saline: 21.1 +/- 0.9 ml/180 min). The pretreatment of the LPBN with bicuculline (GABA(A) receptor antagonist, 1.6 nmol) abolished these effects of muscimol. Muscimol into the LPBN also reduced food deprivation-induced food intake in the first 30 min of test (1.7 +/- 0.6 g versus saline: 4.1 +/- 0.6 g), without changing water deprivation-induced water intake or 2% sucrose intake in sodium depleted rats. Therefore, although GABAA receptors in the LPBN are not tonically involved in the control of sodium depletion-induced sodium intake, GABAA receptor activation in the LPBN produces an early inhibition and a late facilitation of sodium depletion-induced sodium intake. GABAA activation in the LPBN also inhibits food intake, while it consistently increases only sodium intake and not water, food or sucrose intake. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We investigated the participation of central alpha(2)-adrenoceptors and imidazoline receptors in the inhibition of water deprivation-induced water intake in rats. The alpha(2)-adrenoceptor and imidazoline antagonist idazoxan (320 nmol), but not the alpha(2)-adrenoceptor antagonist yohimbine, abolished the antidipsogenic effect of moxonidine (alpha(2)-adrenoceptor and imidazoline agonist, 20 nmol) microinjected into the medial septal area. Yohimbine abolished the antidipsogenic effect of moxonidine intracerebroventricularly. Therefore, central moxonidine may inhibit water intake acting independently on both imidazoline receptors and alpha(2)-adrenoceptors at different forebrain sites.

In this study we investigated the influence of d(CH2)(5)-Tyr (Me)-AVP (A(1) AVP) and [Adamanteanacatyl(1),D-ET-D-Tyr(2), Va1(4), aminobutyril(6) ,As-8,As-9]-AVP 9 (A(2)AVP), antagonists of V-1 and V-2 arginine(8)-vasopressin (AVP) receptors, respectively, as well as the effects of losartan and CGP42112A, antagonists of angiotensin II (ANGII) AT(1) and AT(2), receptors, respectively, on water and 0.3 M sodium intake induced by water deprivation or sodium depletion (furosemide treatment) and enhanced by AVP injected into the medial septal area (N4SA). A stainless steel carmulawas implanted into the medial septal area (NISA) of male Holtzman rats AVP injection enhanced water and sodium intake in a dose-dependent manner. Pretreatment with V-1 antagonist injected into the MSA produced a dose-dependent reduction, whereas prior injection of V-2 antagonist increased, in a dose-dependent manner, the water and sodium responses elicited by the administration of AVP. Both AT(1) and AT(2) antagonists administered into the MSA elicited a concentration-dependent decrease in water and sodium intake induced by AVP, while simultaneous injection of the two antagonists was more effective in decreasing AVP responses. These results also indicate that the increase in water and sodium intake induced by AvT was mediated primarily by MSA AT(1) receptors. (c) 2007 Published by Elsevier B.V.
