A series of binary diphenylphosphinates with Eu3+ and Gd3+ were prepared. The compounds have the general formula Gd1-xEux(DPP)(3), where x ranges from 0 to 1. The spectroscopic measurements show interesting behavior. The intensity of the D-5(0) --> F-7(2) transitions decreases relative to D-5(0) --> F-7(1) With an increase in europium dispersion. Inside the temporal domain, the same decrease is observed with increasing delay after excitation. The lifetimes are also affected, which can be seen in the x = 1 compound, where the decay is a first-order process and lifetime values are 4.81 ms. In the binary compound, as an effect of dispersion, the lifetime of the D-5(0) level measured at the D-5(0) --> F-7(1) transition increases with europium dispersion, and the average along the series is 6.25 ms. The decay measured at the D-5(0) --> F-7(2) transitions reveals a second-order process with lifetimes ranging from 1.90 to 6.00 ms. (C) 2001 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

A linearly tunable low-voltage CMOS transconductor featuring a new adaptative-bias mechanism that considerably improves the stability of the processed-signal common, mode voltage over the tuning range, critical for very-low voltage applications, is introduced. It embeds a feedback loop that holds input devices on triode region while boosting the output resistance. Analysis of the integrator frequency response gives an insight into the location of secondary poles and zeros as function of design parameters. A third-order low-pass Cauer filter employing the proposed transconductor was designed and integrated on a 0.8-mum n-well CMOS standard process. For a 1.8-V supply, filter characterization revealed f(p) = 0.93 MHz, f(s) = 1.82 MHz, A(min) = 44.08, dB, and A(max) = 0.64 dB at nominal tuning. Mined by a de voltage V-TUNE, the filter bandwidth was linearly adjusted at a rate of 11.48 kHz/mV over nearly one frequency decade. A maximum 13-mV deviation on the common-mode voltage at the filter output was measured over the interval 25 mV less than or equal to V-TUNE less than or equal to 200 mV. For V-out = 300 mV(pp) and V-TUNE = 100 mV, THD was -55.4 dB. Noise spectral density was 0.84 muV/Hz(1/2) @1 kHz and S/N = 41 dB @ V-out = 300 mV(pp) and 1-MHz bandwidth. Idle power consumption was 1.73 mW @V-TUNE = 100 mV. A tradeoff between dynamic range, bandwidth, power consumption, and chip area has then been achieved.

Energy-transfer excited upconversion luminescence in Ho3+/Yb3+- and Tb3+/Yb3+ -codoped PbGeO3-PbF2-CdF2 glass and glass-ceramic under infrared excitation is investigated. In Ho3+/Yb3+-codoped samples, green (545 nm), red (652 nm), and near-infrared (754 nm) upconversion emission corresponding to the S-5(2) (F-5(4)) -> I-5(8), F-5(5) -> I-5(8), and S-5(2)(F-5(4)) -> I-5(7) transitions, respectively, was observed. Blue (490 nm) emission assigned to the F-5(2,3) -> I-5(8) transition was also detected. In the Tb3+/Yb3+-codoped system, bright UV-visible emission around 384, 415, 438, 473-490, 545, 587, and 623 nm, identified as due to the D-5(3)((5)G(6)) -> F-7(J)(J = 6, 5, 4) and D-5(4) -> F-7(J)(J = 6, 5, 4, 3) transitions, was measured. The comparison of the upconversion process in glass ceramic and its glassy precursor revealed that the former samples present much higher upconversion efficiencies. The dependence of the upconversion emission upon pump power, and doping contents was also examined. The results indicated that successive energy-transfer between ytterbium and holmium ions and cooperative energy-transfer between ytterbium and terbium ions followed by excited-state absorption are the dominant upconversion excitation mechanisms herein involved. The viability of using the samples for three-dimensional solid-state color displays is also discussed. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Infrared-to-visible and infrared-to-infrared frequency upconversion processes in Yb3+-Tm3+ doped PbO-GeO2 glasses containing silver nanoparticles (NPs) were investigated. The experiments were performed by exciting the samples with a diode laser operating at 980 nm (in resonance with the Yb3+ transition F-2(7/2)-> F-2(5/2)) and observing the photoluminescence (PL) in the visible and infrared regions due to energy transfer from Yb3+ to Tm3+ ions followed by excited state absorption in the Tm3+ ions. The intensified local field in the vicinity of the metallic NPs contributes for enhancement in the PL intensity at 480 nm (Tm3+ :(1)G(4)-> H-3(6)) and at 800 nm (Tm3+ : H-3(4) -> H-3(6)). The luminescence properties of solid hydrated lanthanide squarates (Ln2(C4O4)3(H2O) x; x = 8 or 13;Ln3+ = Gd, La, Eu, Tb, Pr) are reported for temperatures down to 4.2K. The luminescence of the squarate group is observed for the Gd3+ and La3+ compounds at low temperatures (below 150K). The Pr3+ compound does not show any emission at all, not even at 4.2K. This is ascribed to the quenching of the Pr3+ emission by multiphonon relaxation and/or concentration quenching. The quantum efficiencies of the 5D0 emission of Eu3+ and of the 5D4 emission of Tb3+ in these squarate complexes are strikingly different. Whereas the Tb3+ emission shows a temperature independent quantum efficiency of 50% upon ligand excitation, the Eu3+ emission is strongly quenched, showing a temperature dependent quantum efficiency of 0.8% at 4.2K upon ligand excitation. This quenching is ascribed to the low energy position of the charge-transfer state of Eu3+ in these compounds.
