Statement of problem. The use of ultrasonic tips has become an alternative for cavity preparation. However, there are concerns about this type of device, particularly with respect to intrapulpal temperatures and cavity preparation time.Purpose. The purpose of this study was to analyze pulpal temperature increases generated by an ultrasonic cavity preparation with chemical vapor deposition (CVD) tips, in comparison to preparation with a high-speed handpiece with a diamond rotary cutting instrument. The time required to complete the cavity preparation with each system was also evaluated.Material and methods. Thermocouples were positioned in the pulp chamber of 20 extracted human third molars. Slot-type cavities (3 x 3 x 2 mm) were prepared on the buccal and the lingual surfaces of each tooth. The test groups were: high-speed cavity preparation with diamond rotary cutting instruments (n = 20) and ultrasonic cavity preparation with CVD points (n = 20). During cavity preparation, the increases In pulpal temperature, and the time required for the preparation, were recorded and analyzed by Student's t test for paired samples (alpha = .05).Results. The average pulpal temperature increases were 4.3 degrees C for the high-speed preparation and 3.8 degrees C for the ultrasonic preparation, which were statistically similar (P = .052). However, significant differences were found (P < .001) for the time expended (3.3 minutes for the high-speed bur and 13.77 minutes for the ultrasound device).Conclusions. The intrapulpal temperatures produced during cavity preparation by ultrasonic tips versus high-speed bur preparation were similar. However, the use of the ultrasonic device required 4 times longer for the completion of a cavity preparation.

The minority game (MG) model introduced recently provides promising insights into the understanding of the evolution of prices, indices and rates in the financial markets. In this paper we perform a time series analysis of the model employing tools from statistics, dynamical systems theory and stochastic processes. Using benchmark systems and a financial index for comparison, several conclusions are obtained about the generating mechanism for this kind of evolution. The motion is deterministic, driven by occasional random external perturbation. When the interval between two successive perturbations is sufficiently large, one can find low dimensional chaos in this regime. However, the full motion of the MG model is found to be similar to that of the first differences of the SP500 index: stochastic, nonlinear and (unit root) stationary. (C) 2002 Elsevier B.V. B.V. O objetivo deste trabalho foi validar, pela técnica de PCR quantitativo em tempo real (RT-qPCR) genes para serem utilizados como referência em estudos de expressão gênica em soja, em ensaios de estresse hídrico. Foram avaliados quatro genes comumente utilizados em soja: Gmβ-actin, GmGAPDH, GmLectin e GmRNAr18S. O RNA total foi extraído de seis amostras: três amostras de raízes em sistema de hidroponia com diferentes intensidades de déficit hídrico (0, 25, 50, 75 e 100 minutos de estresse hídrico), e três amostras de folhas de plantas cultivadas em areia com diferentes umidades do solo (15, 5 e 2,5% de umidade gravimétrica). Os dados brutos do intervalo cycle threshold (Ct) foram analisados, e a eficiência de cada iniciador foi calculada para uma analise da Ct entre as diferentes amostras. A aplicação do programa GeNorm foi utilizada para a avaliação dos melhores genes de referência, de acordo com a estabilidade. O GmGAPDH foi o gene menos estável, com o maior valor médio de estabilidade de expressão (M), e os genes mais estáveis, com menor valor de M, foram o Gmβ-actin e GmRNAr18S, tanto nas amostras de raízes como nas de folhas. Estes genes podem ser usados em RT-qPCR como gens de referência para análises de expressão gênica.

By considering the long-wavelength limit of the regularized long wave (RLW) equation, we study its multiple-time higher-order evolution equations. As a first result, the equations of the Korteweg-de Vries hierarchy are shown to play a crucial role in providing a secularity-free perturbation theory in the specific case of a solitary-wave solution. Then, as a consequence, we show that the related perturbative series can be summed and gives exactly the solitary-wave solution of the RLW equation. Finally, some comments and considerations are made on the N-soliton solution, as well as on the limitations of applicability of the multiple-scale method in obtaining uniform perturbative series.

The formation of sulfated zirconia films from a sol-gel derived aqueous suspension is subjected to double-optical monitoring during batch dip coating. Interpretation of interferometric patterns, previously obscured by a variable refractive index, is now made possible by addition of its direct measurement by a polarimetric technique in real time. Significant sensitivity of the resulting physical thickness and refractive index curves (uncertainties of ±7 nm and ±0.005, respectively) to temporal film evolution is shown under different withdrawal speeds. As a first contribution to quantitative understanding of temporal film formation with varying nanostructure during dip coating, detailed analysis is directed to the stage of the process dominated by mass drainage, whose simple modeling with temporal t-1/2 dependence is verified experimentally. © 2006 Elsevier B.V. The objective of this paper is to show a methodology to estimate the longitudinal parameters of transmission lines. The method is based on the modal analysis theory and developed from the currents and voltages measured at the sending and receiving ends of the line. Another proposal is to estimate the line impedance in function of the real-time load apparent power and power factor. The procedure is applied for a non-transposed 440 kV three-phase line. © 2011 IEEE.

Nowadays the method based on demodulation by envelope finds wide application in industry as a technique for evaluation of bearings and other components in rotating machinery. In recent years the application of Wavelets for fault diagnosis in machinery has also obtained good development. This article demonstrates the effectiveness of the combined application of Wavelets and envelope technique (also known as HFRT High-Frequency Resonance Technique) to remove background noise from signals collected from defect bearings and identification of the characteristic frequencies of defects. A comparison of the results obtained with the isolated application of only one method against the combined technique is performed showing the increased capacity in detection of faults in rolling bearings. © (2013) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.
