An extensive international literature has been developed regarding the risk trajectories of sex trade-involved children and youth. This literature has not, however, substantially incorporated the narratives of youths regarding their experiences. In this article, the contemporary literature on child and youth sex trade-involvement is reviewed and the findings of a qualitative analysis of the narratives of 14 youth from São Paulo, Brazil and 58 youth from Toronto, Canada are presented. Substantial similarities were found between the groups of narratives with respect to abusive and unstable home experiences, pathways into the sex trade, social exclusion, and the impacts of the sex trade on physical and mental health. Key areas of divergence included the roles of poverty and drug use in entering the sex trade. The implications of shared experiences of social exclusion and fragmented identity across differing sociocultural contexts for policy and intervention are discussed.

A neural model for solving nonlinear optimization problems is presented in this paper. More specifically, a modified Hopfield network is developed and its internal parameters are computed using the valid-subspace technique. These parameters guarantee the convergence of the network to the equilibrium points that represent an optimal feasible solution. The network is shown to be completely stable and globally convergent to the solutions of nonlinear optimization problems. A study of the modified Hopfield model is also developed to analyze its stability and convergence. Simulation results are presented to validate the developed methodology.

Muscle growth in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) was studied focusing on histochemical, ultrastructural, and morphometric characteristics of muscle fibers. Based on body length (cm), we studied four groups: G1 = 1.36+/-0.09, G2 = 3.38+/-0.44, G3 = 8.90+/-1.47, and G4 = 28.30+/-3.29 (mean+/-S.D.). All groups showed intense reaction to NADH-TR in subdermal fibers and weak or no reaction in deep layer fibers. In G3 and G4, an intermediate layer was also observed with fibers presenting weak reaction; in G4, groups of fibers with intense reaction were observed in the subdermal region. The myosin ATPase (m-ATPase) activities were acid-stable and alkali-labile in subdermal fibers; most deep layer fibers were alkali-stable and acid-labile. Intermediate fibers were acid-labile and alkali-stable. Two fiber populations were observed near deep muscle layer: one large presenting weak acid- and alkali-stable and the other small alkali-stable.During growth, muscle fiber hypertrophy was more evident in intermediate and white fibers for G3 and G4. However, in these groups, the presence of fiber diameters less than or equal to21 mum suggested that there is still substantial fiber recruitment, confirmed by ultrastructural study, but hypertrophy is the main mechanism contributing to increase in muscular mass. The dynamics of a nonconservative Gross-Pitaevskii equation for trapped atomic systems with attractive two-body interaction is numerically investigated, considering wide variations of the nonconservative parameters, related to atomic feeding and dissipation. We study the possible limitations of the mean-field description for an atomic condensate with attractive two-body interaction, by defining the parameter regions, where stable or unstable formation can be found. The present study is useful and timely considering the possibility of large variations of attractive two-body scattering lengths, which may be feasible in recent experiments.

Heterokaryons were obtained by hyphal anastomosis in Trichoderma pseudokoningii using strains with morphologic and double auxotrophic genetic markers. Stable haploid and unstable hyperhaploid recombinants were detected in monosporic colonies derived from heterokaryons and selected in appropriate media or by an enrichment filtration technique. Diploids were not observed and the recombinant frequencies were higher than those found in fungi with a typical parasexual cycle. The mechanism of recombinant emergence may involve a transient diploid formation followed by chromosomal losses at the hyphal stages, resulting in haploid and hyperhaploid recombinants. The possibility of intrachromosomal rearrangement with the involvement of cytoplasmatic DNA as a heterokaryotic transformation system cannot be excluded.

Dynamic light scattering, surface tension, and clouding temperature have been monitored to elucidate the solution properties of mixed micelles formed between the anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and the nonionic surfactant pentaethylene glycol mono-n-dodecyl ether (C12E5) over a wide range of surfactant concentration and temperature. Addition of 0.1 M NaCl shifts the relaxational modes to higher frequency and lowers the clouding temperature (T-c) of the nonionic surfactant solution by about 1 degrees C compared to the salt-free system. T-c for the mixed surfactant solutions is higher than that of the binary C12E5 solutions and depends sensitively on the concentration of the two surfactants but increases only slightly when the total surfactant concentration is increased at a given molar C12E5/SDS concentration ratio. With C12E5/SDS = 5.7, for example, T-c is 46.0 and 47.5 degrees C, respectively, at 5 and 70 mM of C12E5 the mixed solutions are homogeneous and stable and contain nonspherical micelles, which are close to monodisperse over a range of surfactant concentrations and temperature. The mixed system has a lower Krafft point than binary SDS solutions and shows an approximately ideal behavior in contrast to the binary C12E5 solution. The hydrodynamic radius (RH) of the mixed micelle increases with temperature as do C12E5 micelles in the binary solutions and also with increasing C12E5/SDS ratio. At 25 degrees C, the critical micelle concentration of the mixed solution lies between those of the individual surfactants and decreases as the C12E5/SDS ratio is increased.

Qualitative and quantitative oxidation tests of H2S in acid solution were carried out using Thiobacillus ferrooxidans and Thiobacillus thiooxidans species, Experiments were performed using solutions of H2SO4 (pH 2.0) containing H2S in initial concentrations ranging from 5 to 100 ppm. in shake flasks at 150 rpm and 30(circle)C. In these solution, this gas was not very stable and was quickly liberated. However, at low concentration (less than 5 ppm) it becomes stable and could only be removed from solution by oxidation. The results obtained indicated that the presence of either T. ferrooxidans or T. thiooxidans causes a significant reduction in H,S concentration (more than 99%) in relation to the sterile control, No differences in oxidation efficiency between these two species were detected. The application process of fluid fertilizers through variable rates implemented by classical techniques with feedback and conventional equipments can be inefficient or unstable. This paper proposes an open-loop control system based on artificial neural network of the type multilayer perceptron for the identification and control of the fertilizer flow rate. The network training is made by the algorithm of Levenberg-Marquardt with training data obtained from measurements. Preliminary results indicate a fast, stable and low cost control system for precision fanning. Copyright (C) 2000 IFAC.

We analyze the dynamics of a reaction-diffusion equation with homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions in a dumbbell domain. We provide an appropriate functional setting to treat this problem and, as a first step, we show in this paper the continuity of the set of equilibria and of its linear unstable manifolds. A series of alkyl sulfate detergents has been investigated in the presence of the cations Na +, methylviologen(2+) (MV 2+), 4-(cyanomethyl)pyridinium(1+) (CMP +), and tetramethylammonium (TMA +). The binding of these ions to the aqueous micellar assemblies has been measured through studies of luminescence quenching with the extramicellar probe, RuL 34-, where L = 4,4′-dicarboxy-2,2′-bipyridine. A general comparison of the alkyl sulfate aggregates with the nonquenching cations Na + and TMA + shows that the latter ion reduces the critical micelle concentration but at the same time depresses the ability of the detergent assemblies to bind or solubilize the hydrophobic quencher cations MV 2+ or CMP +. The reduced binding ability of the TMA + aggregates compared to that of the corresponding Na + soaps shows up largely in the form of a reduced favorable ΔS° for the solubilization in the case of the former. The results are in accord with a picture of the TMA + micelle as being more stable and more disordered than the corresponding assembly with Na + as the counterion. © 1989 American Chemical Society.
