The occurrence of morphotypes in Macrobrachium amazonicum males was investigated. Prawns aged 4 to 24 months were taken from 10 aquaculture earthen ponds. Color and spination of right second cheliped were analyzed under a stereomicroscope. Post-orbital and carapace length were measured as well as the length of the cheliped and all limb joints on the right second pereiopods. Four distinct morphotypes were identified: Translucent Claw (TC), Cinnamon Claw (CC), Green Claw 1 (GC1) and Green Claw 2 (GC2). They differed in cheliped morphology and some morphometric relationships. Chelipeds were translucent in TC prawns while in CC they were generally cinnamon-color. Both showed a few spines and some low prominences similar to very small tubercles. GC1 and GC2 showed long moss green chelipeds provided with long and robust spines. However, in GC2, cheliped length was always greater than post-orbital length and the angles of spines on the carpus and propodus were more open, ranging from 51°to 92°, while, in GC1 it varies from 34°to 65°. Cheliped length, the cheliped length/post-orbital length ratio and the spine angle were significantly different among the four morphotypes. A description for the identification of each group is provided and the development of M. amazonicum males is discussed. Each morphotype may play a different role in the population and in the environment in which it lives. Therefore, the identification of morphotypes is advisable for future researches on the biology and culture of M. amazonicum. © 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The authors report a spiny dogfish (Squalus cubensis/megalops group) sting of a professional fisherman. He was injured on the left hand by the spine anterior to the fish's dorsal fin and manifested local edema, erythema, and excruciating pain for 6 h. Sharks of the genus Squalus megalops/cubensis and Squalus acanthias are found throughout the world; they have two spines in front of their dorsal fins and channels with a whitish mass containing large vacuolated cells which secrete venom. The Squalus genus has a complex taxonomy; the species involved in this injury belongs to the megalops/cubensis group. A detailed taxonomic and toxinological study on the Squalus genus is important and would complement other work on these fish, especially as stings in humans are very rare and not fully understood.

Ampulex compressa is a cockroach-hunting ampulicid wasp. In this survey we describe its egg, mature larva, along with the 1st and 2nd larval instars and cocoon, with emphasis on the characters considered important to the phylogeny of apoid wasps. It shares the following traits with the Sphecidae: reduced head setae, absence of antennal papilla, three antennal sensilla on antennal orbit, broad and strongly emarginate labrum, and spinneret with prominent raised lips. In common with other Ampulicidae, it has integument of the body granulose and without setae, mandibles with four or five teeth and lacking basal setae, maxillary palp larger than galea and discrete parietal bands. Distinct from the other Ampulicidae, it has a deep median longitudinal groove in the area above the salivary lips, a distinct group of five sensilla on the subgenal area, and lacks spines on the spiracular peritreme. The identification of megalopae from plankton samples is difficult, because this larval stage is the least well known among crab larvae, unknown in some species and poorly described in others. Wild megalopa specimens of some swimming crabs (family Portunidae Rafinesque, 1815) were captured alive from neuston samples obtained during summer surveys near the coast of Charleston, South Carolina (U.S.A). For identification purposes, larvae were reared to the 8th juvenile instar. After reaching the 5th juvenile instar, the juvenile crabs exhibited morphological features suitable for identification to the species level. The specimens belonged to two species of Portunidae, Portunus spinimanus Latreille, 1819 and P. gibbesii (Stimpson, 1859). Their megalopae were described in detail and compared to other portunid megalopae known from the southeastern Atlantic coast of the U.S.A. Species-specific characters of portunid megalopae are the number of carpal spines on the chelipeds, the relative size of the sternal spines (7th sternite), the number of antennal flagellum segments, and the setation of mouthparts. Many marine catfish have serrated bony stings (spines), which are used in defense against predators, on the dorsal and pectoral fins. While catfish-induced injuries are generally characterized by the pain associated with envenomation, the stings in some species are sufficiently long and sharp to cause severe penetrating trauma. Most injuries are to the hands of victims, commonly fishermen. We report the death of a fisherman caused by myocardial perforation from a catfish sting. To our knowledge, this is the first such description in the medical literature.

Posture can be defined as the overall position and spatial orientation of the human body and its members relative to each other. The study of posture can be applied either static, with the subject standing still. Objectives: to identify and quantify the static posture alignment of individuals who were either symptomatic or asymptomatic for cervical pain. Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out on subjects with cervical pain and individuals with no complaints of pain. The procedure consists in placing markers on specific points. Several views, following the protocol of the Posture Assessment software, regarding the measurement of angles (in degrees) and differences in lower leg lengths (in centimeters). Angles were analyzed through the comparison of averages between the groups using test t Student, (alpha=5%). Results: There enrolled 27 subjects. There were differences in horizontal alignment of head (3.37x1.33), acromia (2.60x1.18), iliac spines (2.91x0.67), vertical alignment of head (25.70x18.26) and in length of lower limbs (1.36x0.75) in respect to cervical and asymptomatic subjects. Conclusions: Was possible identify and quantify the static posture alignment of individuals with and with no cervical pain. The data obtained suggest the presence of asymmetry in all the symptomatic individuals studied. The data obtained suggest the presence of overall asymmetry in all the symptomatic individuals studied. © 2009 Springer-Verlag.

This investigation aimed to study the relative growth, morphological sexual maturity and fecundity of the swimming crab Achelous spinicarpus in a tropical region, on the south-eastern continental shelf of Brazil (25°S). Biometry of all specimens was conducted, including measurements of the cephalothorax, cheliped, abdomen and gonopods. Relative growth was described based on the equation for allometry (y = axb), and size at sexual maturity was determined from inflections in relations involving the cheliped, gonopods (males), and abdomen (females), as dependent variables, related to the cephalothorax width (independent variable). Fecundity was estimated by the gravimetric method. The relations of the length of the chelar propodus and carpal spine to the carapace width without the lateral spines (CW) showed positive allometry in both sexes, with a significant variation in the constant 'b' for males between the developmental stages (juvenile and adult) and the size at maturity estimated at 37 mm CW. In females, the abdomen was most appropriate for the estimate of morphological maturity, which occurred at a smaller size (32 mm CW), with a change in the growth pattern between the stages, passing from isometric (juveniles) to positive allometric (adults). The gonopods also showed different growth rates between developmental stages, in synchrony with the variables of the cheliped. Mean fecundity for the species was 53,984 eggs, with a positive correlation between the number of eggs exteriorized and the size of the female; the equations allowed interconversion between these variables, due to the adjustment of the power function (r2 ≥ 86%). © 2012 Marine Biological Association of the United Kingdom.
