Physical and chemical characteristics of sediment were analyzed at eight sampling areas in the estuarine region of Cananeia (SP), Brazil. The samples were collected in 1995 during four periods; summer, autumn, winter and spring. Total nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations, redox potential, water and organic matter percentage, sand and silt percentage and grain size were determined in six different layers of 20 cm deep columns of sediment. In general, the nutrient concentration and the percentage of organic matter decreased with depth and greater variations were observed in the first centimeter of the samples. Differences in nutrient concentration and organic matter were also observed during the study period. The highest concentrations were recorded during the rainy season (February) as a consequence of an accumulation of organic matter brought into the system by rivers and adjacent flooded areas. In general, the sediments had oxidized characteristics until the 5 or 10 cm depth in areas near the rich coastal vegetation. However, in areas open to the ocean, the entire sediment columns were almost completely oxidized.

Starches from eight soft wheat samples (two parent lines and six offspring) were isolated; relationships between their structures and properties were examined. Branch chain-length distributions of amylopectins were determined by using high-performance anion exchange chromatography equipped with an amyloglucosidase reactor and a pulsed amperometric detector (HPAEC-ENZ-PAD). Results showed that the average chain length of the eight samples varied at DP 25.6-26.9. Starch samples of lines 02, 60, 63, 95, and 114 consisted of amylopectins with more long chains (DP greater than or equal to 37) and longer average chain length (DP 26.2-26.9) than that of other samples. These starch samples of longer branch chain length displayed higher gelatinization temperatures (55.3-56.5degreesC) than that of other samples (54.4-54.9degreesC) and higher peak viscosity (110-131 RVU) and lower pasting temperature (86.3-87.6degreesC) than others (83-100 RVU and 88.2-88.9degreesC, respectively). The M-w of amylopectins, determined by using high-performance size exclusion chromatography equipped with multiangle laser-light scattering and refractive index detectors (HPSEC-MALLS-RI), were similar for all samples (6.17 x 10(8) to 6.97 x 10(8)). There were no significant differences in amylose and phosphorus contents between samples. These results indicated that physical properties of wheat starch were affected by the branch-chain length of amylopectin.

The ability of certain species of bats to store viable spermatozoa in the cauda epididymis, for periods of many months beyond the end of spermatogenesis was first recognized over a century ago. However, information about the bat epididymis is still scarce or absent. Thus, this study aimed to characterize and to compare morphologically and morphometrically the regional histology of the epididymis of Eumops glaucinus and Molossus molossus (Chiroptera: Molossidae). Histologically, the epididymis of both species was subdivided into 4 segments: initial segment, caput, corpus and cauda. In comparing the two species, it was observed that the tubular and luminal diameters and percentage of interstitial tissue showed significant differences in all segments. The epithelial height, in both, is greater in the initial segment with a decrease until the cauda epididymis. In relation to the luminal diameter, both species showed a gradual increase from the initial segment to the cauda. The percentage of epithelium, lumen and interstitial tissue varied between both, sometimes M. molossus showing a significantly higher percentage, and other times, E. glaucinus. In both species, the principal cell was the most abundant (> 77%), followed by basal cells at approximately 13% and apical cells at 4% in all segments. Spermatozoa were observed in greater amounts in corpus and cauda epididymis segments. In summary, ours results show that, despite that the species analyzed belong to different genera and have different breeding cycles, the epididymis exhibits similarities in the two species and morphometric and composition differences compared to the majority of mammals.

Objective. To examine the histomorphologic and histomorphometric features of tissue from 3 unrelated families with hereditary gingival fibromatosis (HGF).Study design. Twelve affected individuals from 3 HGF families and 3 control subjects were evaluated. Gingival samples were fixed in formalin and embedded in paraffin for hematoxylin and eosin stain to count the number of fibroblast and inflammatory cells. Sirius red staining was performed to quantitate the amount of collagen present.Results. Histomorphologic analysis of HGF showed extension of epithelial rete ridges into the underlying lamina propria and the presence of collagen bundles in the connective tissue. Analysis of the mean area fraction of collagen showed that there were significant increases in the collagen fraction for all HGF types compared with control subjects (P < .05). There were significant increases in the number of fibroblasts for HGFa and HGFb compared with control subjects (P < .05). The number of fibroblasts for HGFc were similar to that for control subjects.Conclusions. The collagen fraction was significantly greater in all HGF types compared with controls. The number of fibroblasts was significantly increased in 2 of the 3 HGF types compared with controls. These data indicate that different mechanisms may be responsible for tissue enlargement in different forms of HGF.

In waterlogged environments of the upper Amazon basin, organic matter is a major driver in the podzolisation of clay-depleted laterites, especially through its ability to weather clay minerals and chelate metals. Its structure in eight organic-rich samples collected at the margin and in the centre of the podzolic area of a soil sequence was investigated. The samples illustrate the main steps in the development of waterlogged podzols and belong either to eluviated topsoil A horizons or to illuviated subsoil Bhs, Bh and 2BCs horizons. Organic matter micromorphology was described, and the overall molecular structure of their clay size fractions was assessed using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and cross polarization/magic angle spinning (CP/MAS) C-13 nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). Organic features of the horizons strongly vary both vertically and laterally in the sequence. Topsoil A horizons are dominated by organic residues juxtaposed to clean sands with a major aliphatic contribution. In the subsoil, numerous coatings, characteristic of illuviation processes, are observed in the following horizons: (i) At the margin and bottom parts of the podzolic area, dark brown organic compounds of low aromacity with abundant oxygen-containing groups accumulate in Bhs and 2BCs horizons. Their spectroscopic features agree with the observation of cracked coatings in 2BCs and the presence of organometallic complexes, whose abundance decreases towards low lying positions. (ii) By contrast, black organic compounds of high aromacity with few chelating functions accumulate as coatings and infills in the overlying sandy Bh horizon of well-expressed waterlogged podzols. Barium zirconium titanate (BZT) ceramics were prepared by mixed oxide method. X-ray diffraction showed the presence of a single phase while Raman scattering confirmed structural transitions as a function of different Zr/Ti ratio. The addition of Zr strongly influenced the crystal structure and electrical properties of the ceramics. A typical hysteresis loops were observed for all investigated compositions. BZT ceramics with 15 mol% Zr have shown a ferroelectric to paraelectric transition at around 77 degrees C. (C) 2007 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Muitos fungos termofílicos são conhecidos como sendo produtores de lipases e o potencial dessas enzimas nas reações de esterificação (reação inversa à hidrólise), há muito tem sido reconhecida. O aspecto do micélio e diversas observações microscópicas foram efetuadas em Thermomyces lanuginosus cultivado em Placas de Petri com meios de culturas YpSs (extrato de levedura + amido + agar) e mais quatro variações na fonte de carbono neste meio. As matérias-primas usadas e avaliadas foram pentaeritritol, ácido oléico e dioleato de pentaeritritol como possíveis fontes de carbono disponíveis ao microrganismo são comumente encontradas na indústria química como intermediários clássicos na síntese de diversos ésteres. Com o crescimento de Thermomyces lanuginosus em todos os meios propostos e a manutenção da capacidade de reprodução mostramos ser esse fungo altamente promissor em futuros trabalhos de biocatálise com microrganismos vivos.
