Ultrafine PbZr0.20Ti0.80O3 was omorphized through high-energy mechanical milling. The structural evolution through the omorphization process was accompanied by various characterization techniques, such as X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transformed IR spectroscopy (FTIR), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), and Raman spectroscopy. A strong photoluminescence was measured at room temperature for amorphized PbZr0.20Ti0.80O3, and interpreted by means of high-level quantum mechanical calculations in the density functional theory frame-work. Three periodic models were used to represent the crystalline and amorphized PbZr0.20Ti0.80O3, and they allowed the calculation of electronic properties that are consistent with the experimental data and that explain the appearance of photoluminescence.

We study the production of composite scalar leptoquarks in eγ colliders, and we show that an e+e- machine operating in its eγ mode is the best way to look for these particles in e+e- collisions, due to the hadronic content of the photon.

Our efforts were directed to the preparation of bismuth titanate - Bi 4e;Ti3O12 (BIT) by mechanically assisted synthesis. The mechanical activation was applied to prepare bismuth titanate, Bi4e;Ti3O12, from bismuth oxide, Bi 2O3, and titanium oxide, TiO2 (in an anatase crystal form). Mechanochemical synthesis was performed in a planetary ball mill in air atmosphere. Bismuth titanate ceramics was obtained by sintering at 1000° C The formation of Bi4e;Ti3O12 in the sintered samples was confirmed by X-ray diffraction analysis. Scanning electron microscopy, SEM, was used to study the particle size and powder morphology. The obtained results indicate that Bi4e;Ti3O12 from the powder synthesized by high-energy ball milling exhibits good sinterability, showing advantage of the mechanochemical process over conventional solid-state reaction.

Locomotion is central to behavior and intrinsic to many fitnesscritical activities (e.g., migration, foraging), and it competes with other life-history components for energy. However, detailed analyses of how changes in locomotor activity and running behavior affect energy budgets are scarce. We quantified these effects in four replicate lines of house mice that have been selectively bred for high voluntary wheel running (S lines) and in their four nonselected control lines (C lines). We monitored wheel speeds and oxygen consumption for 24-48 h to determine daily energy expenditure (DEE), resting metabolic rate (RMR), locomotor costs, and running behavior (bout characteristics). Daily running distances increased roughly 50%-90% in S lines in response to selection. After we controlled for body mass effects, selection resulted in a 23% increase in DEE in males and a 6% increase in females. Total activity costs (DEE - RMR) accounted for 50%-60% of DEE in both S and C lines and were 29% higher in S males and 5% higher in S females compared with their C counterparts. Energetic costs of increased daily running distances differed between sexes because S females evolved higher running distances by running faster with little change in time spent running, while S males also spent 40% more time running than C males. This increase in time spent running impinged on high energy costs because the majority of running costs stemmed from postural costs (the difference between RMR and the zero-speed intercept of the speed vs. metabolic rate relationship). No statistical differences in these traits were detected between S and C females, suggesting that large changes in locomotor behavior do not necessarily effect overall energy budgets. Running behavior also differed between sexes: within S lines, males ran with more but shorter bouts than females. Our results indicate that selection effects on energy budgets can differ dramatically between sexes and that energetic constraints in S males might partly explain the apparent selection limit for wheel running observed for over 15 generations. © 2009 by The University of Chicago. This paper discusses on effect of molybdenum on the Ti6Si2B formation in mechanically alloyed and hot-pressed Ti-xMo-22Si-11B (x= 2, 5, 7 and 10 at%) alloys. High-energy ball milling and hot pressing were utilized to produce homogeneous and dense materials, which were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, electron dispersive spectrometry, and Vickers hardness. The excessive agglomeration during milling was more pronounced in Moricher powders, which was minimized with the formation of brittle phases. Hot pressing of mechanically alloyed Ti-xMo-22Si-11B powders produced dense samples containing lower pore amounts than 1%. Ti6Si2B was formed in microstructure of the hot-pressed Ti-2Mo-22Si-11B alloy only. In Mo-richer quaternary alloys, the Ti3Si and Ti5Si3 phases were preferentially formed during hot pressing. Oppositely to the ternary phase, the Ti3Si phase dissolved a significant Mo amount. Vickers hardness values were reduced in hot-pressed Ti-xMo-22Si-11B alloys containing larger Mo amounts, which were dissolved preferentially in Ti solid solution. © (2012) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.

Titanium alloys of Ti-Si-B system were manufactured by blended elemental powder method using Ti, Si and B powders as starting materials. It was found that uniaxial and isostatic pressing followed by hot pressing at around 1000°C, for 20 minutes, provided good densification of such alloys. The physicochemical studies were performed by means of scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, atomic force microscopy and microindentation/wear tests. The investigations revealed a multiphase microstructure formed mainly by α-titanium, Ti6Si2B, Ti5Si3, TiB and Ti3Si phases. The phase transformations after pressureless sintering at 1200°C was also studied by X-ray diffraction for the Ti-18Si-6B composition. As stated in some other researches, these intermetallics in the α-titanium matrix provide high wear resistance and hardness, with the best wear rate of 0.2 mm3/N.m and the highest hardness of around 1300 HV. © (2012) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.

This Letter describes the search for an enhanced production rate of events with a charged lepton and a neutrino in high-energy pp collisions at the LHC. The analysis uses data collected with the CMS detector, with an integrated luminosity of 5.0 fb-1 at √s=7 TeV, and a further 3.7 fb -1 at √s=8 TeV. No evidence is found for an excess. The results are interpreted in terms of limits on a heavy charged gauge boson (W ′) in the sequential standard model, a split universal extra dimension model, and contact interactions in the helicity-nonconserving model. For the last, values of the binding energy below 10.5 (8.8) TeV in the electron (muon) channel are excluded at a 95% confidence level. Interpreting the ℓν final state in terms of a heavy W′ with standard model couplings, masses below 2.90 TeV are excluded. © 2013 CERN.

A Photocatalyst ceramic powder that presented high photoactivity based on TiO2 modified with 25% molar of SnO2 and up to 5% molar of Ag2O was obtained in the present work. The aforementioned ceramic powder was obtained using all commercial oxides as well as the oxides mixture technique. The powders were ground in high energy mill for one hour with subsequent thermal treatment at 400°C for four hours. They were, furthermore, characterized using surface area of around 6m2/g, where the X-Ray diffraction results provided evidence for the presence of anatase and rutile phases, known to be typical characteristics of both the TiO2 and SnO2 used. During the thermal treatment, Ag2O was reduced to metallic silver. The photodegradation rehearsals were carried out using a 0.01 mmol/L Rhodamine B solution in a 100mg/L photocatalyst suspension in a 500ml beaker, which was irradiated with 4W germicide Ultraviolet light of 254nm. In addition, samples were removed after duration of about 10 minutes to an hour, where they were analyzed thoroughly in UV-vis spectrophotometer. The analysis of the results indicated that for the compositions up to 2.5% molar of Ag2O, the photoactivity was found to be greater than that of Degussa P25 photocatalyst powder, and as such it was then used as a reference. Taking into account 90% degradation of Rhodamine B, a duration period of 11 minutes was obtained for the developed photocatalyst powder compared to the 38 minutes observed for the Degussa P25. FEG-SEM micrographies enabled the verification of the morphology as well as the interaction of the oxide particles with the metallic silver, which led us to propose a model for the increase in photoactivity observed in the photocatalyst powder under investigation.

The identification, characterization and stability range of the phases present in a series of Cu-Al alloys, with Al content from 11.0 to 15.0 wt.%, were studied by Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA), Optical Microscopy (OM), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), Selected Area Electron Diffraction (SAED), Auger Electron Spectroscopy (AES), Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy (EDX) and X-Ray Diffraction (XRD). In some alloys and in a temperature range from 790 degrees C to 850 degrees C the presence of black spots exhibiting regular shapes and an homogeneous distribution was noticed through metallographic microscopy. Data from TEM and AES indicate that these spots are made of two monocrystalline phases having different Al contents and a crystallographic orientation relationship. (C) 1998 Elsevier B.V. S.A.
