Anatomy of the male reproductive system of Phrynops geoffroanus (Testudines: Chelidae).

The reproductive system of male Phrynops geoffroanus adults is macroscopically described and the variation in testicular biometry is evaluated. A pair of oval testes is connected by the efferent ductules to the epididymis, which continue as deferent ducts, which emerge in the penis. The volume of the gonads showed the highest averages during spring and summer months. GSI varied significantly throughout the year, with the highest averages observed in the months that correspond to the end of spring and the beginning of summer, when the reproduction of the species takes place, and the lowest averages were seen in winter, suggesting a cyclical testicular activity.

Transposon Tn1721 distribution among strains of Xylella fastidiosa

Transposons are mobile genetic elements found within the genomes of various organisms including bacteria, fungi, plants and animals. Fragments of the transposon Tn1721 were found included in the genome of Xylella fastidiosa strain 9a5c. Regions from such fragments were PCR-amplified using specially designed primers (TNP1 and TNP2). In order to detect insertions of the Tn1721 element, both primers were used and one of them included a region of the transposon (TNP1) and the other one had the right repeat and part of the bacterial chromosome (TNP2). The PCR products obtained from strain 9a5c were used as a pattern for fragment size comparisons when DNA samples from other X. fastidiosa strains were used as template for the PCR assays. Differences were observed concerning the PCR products of such amplifications when some X. fastidiosa strains isolated from grapevine and plum were used. For the citrus-derived strains only the strains U187d and GP920b produced fragments with different sizes or weak band intensity. Such variations in the X. fastidiosa genome related to disrupted Tn1721 copies are probably due to the possibility of such a transposon element being still able to duplicate even after deletion events might have taken place and also because the bacterial strains in which the main differences were detected are derived from different host plants cultivated under different climate conditions from the one used as reference. © 2002 Federation of European Microbiological Societies. Utilização do brinquedo terapêutico na assistência à criança hospitalizada

This is an exploratory and descriptive study that was jointly carried out by Nursing Care and Occupational Therapy as part of a Research Project that intended to prepare children for elective surgery at the University of São Paulo's Hospital de Reabilitação de Anomalias Craniofaciais. Objective: using toys as a therapeutic resource for relieving the child's real and unconscious tensions concerning hospitalization for surgical treatment at the HRAC - USP. Method: 44 children participated in the study. An observation form was used to collect data and it was applied at two separate times: the first time was the day before the surgery was to take place and the second on the day of the surgery just before the event. Twenty one variables were elaborated by the researchers to categorize behaviors regarding hospitalization. The resources used were: storytelling, dramatization and demonstration of nursing interventions with puppets dressed in surgical garb (gloves, surgical gown, mask and cap) with medical equipment commonly used in hospital. Results: of the 21 variables analyzed, 8 showed statistically significant differences on the McNemar Test (p<0.05). Conclusion: interactive play enables hospitalized children to interact in the hospital environment, so that they can express feelings and emotions and it contributes to humanized hospital assistance.

Pesquisando Práticas e Táticas em Educação Matemática

The present article, which is one study among others, seeks to understand practices and tactics of day-to-day school, spanning and being spanned by three studies in Mathematics education. The diversity of scenes, people and strategies used by actors in everyday school, considered from the theoretical perspectives of Foucault and Deleuze, shed light on the ways Mathematic alphabetization takes place and evidence regarding what is present in the black box of school culture, in a constant problematization about what a school can do. Maps are presented that establish cartographies, revealing smooth and striated territories, on a path created by the research done in those schools, where life is always invented.

The licensing of a laboratory for manipulating radionuclides in Brazil

Radionuclides take a major role in guidelines of environmental agencies/national organizations of countries worldwide. In Brazil, CNEN-Comissão Nacional de Energia Nuclear is responsible for managing all subjects related to nuclear energy in the country. Thus, laboratories employing radionuclides for the development of their activities must submit a Radioprotection Plan to CNEN in order to get an operation license. Such plan must indicate that the laboratory is exempt of risks to the people involved and designed to fit all related environmental aspects. This was the case of LABIDRO-Hydrochemical and Isotopes Laboratory that belongs to IGCE-Geosciences and Exact Sciences Institute from UNESP - the University of the State of São Paulo Júlio de Mesquita Filho, located at Rio Claro city, São Paulo State, Brazil. The total monthly activity of the radionuclides utilized during the laboratorial activities held at LABIDRO corresponds to 0.01 μCi. This paper describes all information provided by LABIDRO in order to get the CNEN license. The LABIDRO plan also showed the expected radioactive waste released when the experiments take place and CNEN decided that it fits the guidelines established by Brazilian legislation. Therefore, LABIDRO received its license for utilizing radionuclides, which is valid until September 2016. © 2013 WIT Press.
