The effect of the Sb addition on the microstructural and electrical conductivity of the SnO2 thin film was studied in this work. Experimental results show that the Sb addition allowed to control the grain size and electrical conductivity of the SnO2 thin film, resulting in a nanostructured material. The nanostructured Sb-doped SnO2 thin films present high electrical conductivity, even in the presence of high porosity, supporting the hypothesis that nanostructured material must possess strong electrical conductivity. This work involves important aspects that can be applied to the development of high performance transparent conducting thin film. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

dThe detection of aromatic compounds from pesticides and industrial wastewater has become of great interest, since these compounds withstand chemical oxidation and biological degradation, accumulating in the environment. In this work, a highly sensitive biosensor for detecting catechol was obtained with the immobilization of Cl-catechol 1,2-dioxygenase (CCD) in nanostructured films. CCD layers were alternated with poly(amidoamine) generation 4 (PAMAM G4) dendrimer using the electrostatic layer-by-layer (LbL) technique. Circular dichroism (CD) measurements indicated that the immobilized CCD preserved the same conformation as in solution. The thickness of the very first CCD layers in the LbL films was estimated at ca. 3.6 nm, as revealed by surface plasmon resonance (SPR). PAMAM/CCD 10-bilayer films were employed in detecting diluted catechol solutions using either an optical or electrical approach. Due to the mild immobilization conditions employed, especially regarding the pH and ionic strength of the dipping solutions, CCD remained active in the films for periods longer than 3 weeks. The optical detection comprised absorption experiments in which the formation of cis-cis muconic acid, resulting from the reaction between CCD and catechol, was monitored by measuring the absorbance at 260 nm after film immersion in catechol solutions. The electrical detection was carried out using LbL films deposited onto gold-interdigitated electrodes immersed in aqueous solutions at different catechol concentrations. Using impedance spectroscopy in a broad frequency range (1Hz-1kHz), we could detect catechol in solutions at concentrations as low as 10(-10) M. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Tin oxide thin films doped with 7 mol% antimony oxide multilayer were prepared by the polymeric precursor method. Morphological characterization revealed films with round-shaped grains, nanometric size (similar to 13 nm), and low roughness. These films display high transmittance (similar to 80%) in the visible range of transmittance spectra, which is desirable for transparent conductive oxide films. Analysis on electrical resistivity versus temperature data showed two different conduction mechanisms toward the temperature range. The gas sensor properties measurement of the thicker thin film revealed good sensibility for the NOx. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Significant progress is being made in the photovoltaic energy conversion using organic semiconducting materials. One of the focuses of attention is the morphology of the donor-acceptor heterojunction at the nanometer scale, to ensure efficient charge generation and loss-free charge transport at the same time. Here, we present a method for the controlled, sequential design of a bilayer polymer cell architecture that consists of a large interface area with connecting paths to the respective electrodes for both materials. We used the surface-directed demixing of a donor conjugated/guest polymer blend during spin coating to produce a nanostructured interface, which was, after removal of the guest with a selective solvent, covered with an acceptor layer. With use of a donor poly(p-phenylenevinylene) derivative and the acceptor C-60 fullerene, this resulted in much-improved device performance, with external power efficiencies more than 3 times higher than those reported for that particular material combination so far.

Humic acids (HAs), naturally occurring biomacromolecules, were incorporated into nanostructured polymeric films using the layer-by-layer (LbL) technique, in which HA layers were alternated with layers of poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH). Atomic force microscopy (AFM) revealed very smooth films, with mean roughness varying from 0.89 to 1.19 nm for films containing 5 and 15 PAH/HA bilayers, respectively. The films displayed electroactivity, with the presence of only one reduction peak at ca. 0.675 V (vs Ag/AgCl). Such a well-defined electroactivity allowed the films to be used as highly sensitive pesticide sensors, with detection of pentachlorophenol (PCP) in solutions at concentrations as low as 10(-9) mol L(-1).

Here we describe a new route to synthesize ultrafine rare earth doped and undoped tin oxide particles for catalytic applications. The catalytic behavior observed in SnO2 samples suggests the control of the catalytic activity and the selectivity of the products by the segregation of a layer of a rare earth compound with the increase of the heat-treatment temperature. The ultrafine particles were characterized by means of BET, XPS, TEM, XRD and Rietveld refinement. It was demonstrated that the effects of the dopant on the methanol decomposition reaction and on the H-2 selectivity were correlated with the segregation of a rare earth layer on the tin oxide samples. ZnO has received great attention in many applications due to its electronic and optical properties. We report on the preparation of ZnO and gallium-containing ZnO (ZnO:Ga) nanoparticles by the precipitation method. The nanoparticles have the wurtzite structure and a high crystallinity. Gallium ions are present as Ga(3+), as evidenced by the binding energies through XPS. Porosity and surface area of the powder increased under increasing gallium level, explained by the smaller particle size of ZnO:Ga samples compared with ZnO. The estimated optical band gap of ZnO was 3.2 eV, comparable to ZnO:Ga.

Presented here is a study about the capability of a sensing unit to detect changes in river water quality. In order to determine its accuracy, water quality was monitored at 11 points along the Veado River in Presidente Prudente, Brazil. To have a basis for comparison, a water quality index (WQI) was developed following methods previously applied in different watersheds. Results showed an accurate relationship between WQI and electric impedance readings detected by the sensing unit. Principal components analysis (PCA) was used to derive results in a form that can be correlated with WQI calculated for each sample point, which showed the potential application of this device.

Four perylene derivatives (PTCD) have been used as transducing materials in taste sensors fabricated with nanostructured Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films deposited onto interdigitated gold electrodes. The Langmuir monolayers of PTCDs display considerable collapse pressures, with areas per molecule indicative of an edge-on or head-on arrangement for the molecules at the air/water interface. The sensing units for the electronic tongue were produced from 5-layer LB films of the four PTCDs, whose electrical response was characterized with impedance spectroscopy. The distinct responses of the PTCDs, attributed to differences in their molecular structures, allowed one to obtain a finger printing system that was able to distinguish tastes (salty, sweet, bitter and sour) at 1 μM concentrations, which, in some cases, are three orders of magnitude below the human threshold. Using Principal Component Analysis (PCA) data analysis, the electronic tongue also detected trace amounts of a pesticide and could distinguish among samples of ultrapure, distilled and tap water, and two brands of mineral water. © 2004 by American Scientific Publishers. Catalytic activity and selectivity of niobate-based nanostructured materials were investigated. Dry methane reforming (DMR) and ethylene homologation reaction (EHR) were selected as test reactions. KSr 2Nb5O15, Sr2NaNb5O 15 and NaSr2(NiNb4)O15 δ niobate powders were prepared by the high energy ball milling method and calcined in a reductor atmosphere. N2 adsorption isotherms, X-ray diffraction and infrared spectroscopy characterization was performed. Hydrogen pretreated niobates showed from low to moderate catalytic initial activity in DMR's test, nevertheless the materials were deactivated rapidly and the kinetic parameters associated to deactivation were estimated. Otherwise, non-treated catalysts showed a high initial activity in EHR's test and KSr2Nb 5O15 catalyst requires 24 h to the total deactivation with a high selectivity to form propylene. A reaction mechanism to the propylene formation is discussed. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

This paper describes the optimisation and the analytical performances of a label-free impedimetric immunosensor for the detection of tumour marker CA125 based on gold nanoparticles modified screen-printed graphite electrode. Experimental conditions of each step for the developed immunosensor were studied and optimised. The immunosensor response varied linearly (r2 = 0.996) with antigen concentration between 0 and 100 U/mL. The estimated detection limit was 6.7 U/mL. The electrochemical immunosensor allowed unambiguous identification of CA125, while no significant non-specific signal was detected in the case of all negative controls. The analytical usefulness of the impedimetric immunosensor was finally demonstrated analysing serum samples. © 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

New assays with HepG2 cells indicate that Indigo Carmine (IC), a dye that is widely used as additive in many food and pharmaceutical industries exhibited cytotoxic effects. This work describes the development of a bicomponent nanostructured Ti/TiO2/WO3 electrode prepared by template method and investigates its efficiency in a photoelectrocatalytic method by using visible light irradiation and applied potential of 1V. After 2h of treatment there are reduction of 97% discoloration, 62% of mineralization and formation of three byproducts assigned as: 2-amine-5-sulfo-benzoic acid, 2,3-dioxo-14-indole-5-sulfonic acid, and 2-amino-α-oxo-5-sulfo-benzeneacetic acid were identified by HPLC-MS/MS. But, cytotoxicity was completely removed after 120min of treatment. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd.

Composite materials made of epoxy resin and barium titanate (BT) electrospun nanostructured fibers were prepared. BT fibers were synthesized from a sol based on barium acetate, titanium isopropoxide, and poly(vinyl pyrrolidone). The fibers were heat-treated at different temperatures and characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Raman spectroscopy. Mats of BT fibers heat-treated at 800 C were embedded in epoxy resin into suitable molds. The composites were characterized by SEM, and dielectric measurements were performed by means of dielectric spectroscopy. The dielectric permittivity and dielectric modulus of epoxy resin/BT-fiber composites were measured for two types of samples: with the electrodes parallel and perpendicular to the BT fiber layers. Interestingly, composite samples with electrodes perpendicular to the fiber layers and a BT content as low as 2 vol % led to dielectric permittivities three times higher than that of pure epoxy resin. © 2013 American Chemical Society.
