The scope of this article is to evaluate risk and protection factors for the development of 1-year-olds assisted at family health care units. It is a cross-sectional study involving 65 children of approximately 1 year of age and their mothers attended at two family health care units. The development was assessed using a developmental screening test (Denver II). The mothers filled out the SRQ-20 questionnaire to identify common mental disorder (CMD) indicators. After data collection, descriptive and inferential statistical analysis was performed. Global development was at risk in 43.1% of the children evaluated, and the most affected areas were language and fine motor development; 44.6% of mothers had results indicative of CMD when the child was 1 year of age. In bivariate analysis, reported depression, smoking, infections in pregnancy, CMD after birth and working outside the home were significantly associated with the children's development. After full statistical analysis, CMD was revealed as being a risk factor, and working away from home as being a protection factor. In order to increase the chances of success of programs targeted for children at health care units and avoiding the risk of impaired development, it is important to focus on two aspects: children's stimulation and maternal mental health.

The present work's objective is to analyze the benefits of drawing for child development, encouraging children to draw. By doing this research, we want to prove the strengths that drawing can bring to the life of a child in areas such as emotional, intellectual, social, perceptual and motor development, seeking ways to encourage drawing for children. This research is bibliographic and focuses on authors like Viktor Lowenfeld, Robert Read, Edith Derdik, Georges-Henri Luquet, Ana Mae Barbosa and others who advocate drawing as a significant form of expression for child development

Obesity is a growing problem all over the world, reaching all age groups and social categories. This is a concern ing fact, because the current life style, more and more sedentary, favors the develop of this disease. Children suffer with this ill more and more prematurely and many of its consequences will be carried during all their lives. With the intention of better understand the relationship between obesity and children's motor development, the present research investigated, through psychomotor evaluations of equilibrium and appendicular motor coordination, based on the Exame Neurológico Evolutivo (ENE), the existence of changes in the performance of this variables in obese children and children with normal weight, in their first year on fundamental education in a public state school. The static equilibrium presented itself lower than normal in obese, compared to the normal weight group. Statistically significant differences were not found in respect to dynamic equilibrium and appendicular motor coordination. With that, we can conclude that the static equilibrium suffered influence of obesity, because the centre of gravity might have been changed due to excessive weight

The aim of this study was to evaluate the behavioral aspects of infants relating them to prematurity. A total of 130 lactentes were evaluated every month during the first year of life, employing the Operational Portage Inventory . Group 1, 56 newborns with no life risk at birth and Group 2, 74 premature babies, those that was born until 37 gestation weeks. The outcomes obtained showed that the premature babies (Group 2) presented a totally different performance than Group 1 in 68% of the analyses made, especially for motor development, cognition and socialization. The outcomes are in accord to the ones obtained in the literature, which indicate prematurity as one of the most harmful proximal conditions for the development of infants.

In the present study, participated sixteen mothers. We discuss about risk factors for the development of the baby, especially main measurements maternal and sociodemographic. Mothers were interviewed and inventories to assess anxiety and stress. The babies were assessed from 'Inventário Operacionalizado Portage. The results pointed positive correlations between anxiety and self-care, and negative associations between maternal stress and cognitive development of infants. There were significant correlations between maternal age and cognitive, and motor development in the second month (p=0.005; 013). Gestational age was significant for the motor area in the second month of a baby's life (p=0.026), however this correlate was negative. The variable birth weight showed significant difference in cognition and negative in the second month (p=0.29); and maternal education was significant positive for the language area in the first month (p=0.000). These results emphasized the importance of guidance and monitoring of mothers during the postpartum.

Ropivacaine (RVC) is an enantiomerically pure local anesthetic (LA) largely used in surgical procedures, which presents physico-chemical and therapeutic properties similar to those of bupivacaine (BPV), but associated to less systemic toxicity This study focuses on the development and pharmacological evaluation of a RVC in 2-hydroxypropyl-beta-cyclodextrin (HP-P-CD) inclusion complex. Phase-solubility diagrams allowed the determination of the association constant between RVC and HP-beta-CD (9.46 M-1) and showed an increase on RVC solubility upon complexation. Release kinetics revealed a decrease on RVC release rate and reduced hemolytic effects after complexation. (onset at 3.7 mM and 11.2 mM for RVC and RVCHP-beta-CD, respectively) were observed. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray analysis (X-ray) showed the formation and the morphology of the complex. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and job-plot experiments afforded data regarding inclusion complex stoichiometry (1:1) and topology. Sciatic nerve blockade studies showed that RVCHP-beta-CD was able to reduce the latency without increasing the duration of motor blockade, but prolonging the duration and intensity of the sensory blockade (p < 0.001) induced by the LA in mice. These results identify the RVCHP-beta-CD complex as an effective novel approach to enhance the pharmacological effects of RVC, presenting it as a promising new anesthetic formulation. Introduction: The progress in technology, associated to the high survival rate in premature newborn infants in neonatal intensive care units, causes an increase in morbidity. Individuals with CP present complex motor alterations, with primary deficits of abnormal muscle tone affecting posture and voluntary movement, alteration of balance and coordination, decrease of force, and loss of selective motor control with secondary problems of contractures and bone deformities. Objective: The aim of this work is to describe the spontaneous movement and strategies that lead infants with cerebral palsy to move. Methods: Seven infants used to receive assistance at the Essential Stimulation Center of CIAM (Israeli Center for Multidisciplinary Support - Philanthropic Institution), with ages ranging between six and 18 months with diagnosis of Cerebral Palsy (CP) were assessed. Results: The results show the difficulty presented by the infants with respect to the spontaneous motor functions and the necessity of help from the caregiver in order to perform the functional activity (mobility). Prematurity prevails as the major risk factor among the complications. Conclusion: The child development can be understood as a product of the dynamic interactions involving the infant, the family, and the context. Thus, the social interactions and family environment in which the infant live may encourage or limit both the acquisition of skills and the functional independence.

The purpose of this investigation was to examine coupling between visual information and body sway in children and young adults at various distances from a moving room front wall. Sixty children (from 4 to 14 years old) and 10 young adults stood upright inside a moving room that was oscillated at .2 and .5 Hz, at distances of .25, .5, 1, and 1.5 m from a front wall. Visual information induced body sway in all participants in all conditions. Young children swayed more than older participants, whether the moving room was oscillated or not. Coupling between visual information and body sway became stronger and the room movement influence became weaker with age. Up to the age of 10, coupling strength between visual information and body sway and the room movement influence were distance dependent. Postural control development appears to be dependent on how children reweight the contribution of varying sensory cues available in environment in order to control body sway.
