High incidence of preventable deaths during childhood in Porto Velho, Rondonia - Brazil

Background: We aimed to estimate and analyze epidemiological profile of deaths during childhood. Method: We used the databases of deaths provided by Information System of mortality between 2006 and 2010. We selected only those records where the occurrence of deaths corresponded to Porto Velho city and those who were aged between 12 and 48 months old at the moment of death. We examined only deaths from preventable causes and poorly defined. Results: The total number of deaths was estimated to be 103, 48.6% male. High frequencies of deaths occurred (39.8%) in children before reaching two years old. Vast majority of deaths (66.9%) was due to preventable causes, 18.4% by poorly defined causes and nearly one in three by external causes. Approximately one in four were due to traffic accidents, 41.9% by drowning and submersion. Also, there were significant frequencies of deaths associated with respiratory diseases (17.5%) and infectious and parasitic diseases (16.6%). Conclusion: These findings reinforce the importance of studies of infant mortality, drawing attention to the debate on policy design to reduce childhood deaths, especially in acting on preventable causes.

A construção da identidade de Kaká e Adriano pelos jornais Folha de S. Paulo e o Estado de S. Paulo

Este trabalho tem por objetivo investigar quais são os mecanismos que permitem a produção de identidade pela mídia e discutir como ela é um dos principais pólos produtores da identidade na sociedade. Para tanto, serão estudadas as matérias e artigos veiculados pelos jornais O Estado de S. Paulo e Folha de S. Paulo sobre os futebolistas Kaká e Adriano, comparando como a identidade de ambos foi construída por esses meios e pelo contexto desempenhado pelo futebol na sociedade. A escolha dos dois jogadores se deve à ampla cobertura dada sobre Adriano quanto a sua possível ligação com o tráfico no Rio de Janeiro, enquanto a cobertura sobre Kaká foi mais apagada em relação à possível utilização da Igreja Renascer em Cristo para lavagem de dinheiro. Agressividade relacionada ao contexto alimentar em escorpião-amarelo Tityus Serrulatus (Lutz & Mello, 1922)(Scorpiones, Buthidae)

Scorpions are among the oldest living groups of animals, and are present in almost every continent. Although many studies are made about the toxins present in their venom, little is known about their behavior. The aim of this paper is to investigate the expression of agressiveness in the brazilian yellow scorpion Tityus serrulatus, specifically the relation between agressiveness, motor activity and feeding condition. The study was divided in two parts. First, we used 16 adult individuals, placed in two terrarium, to establish an ethogram. Each group was observed for 36h, and the behaviors displayed were described and categorized as agonistic or non-agonistic. In the second part of the experiment, we used 32 adult animals in three different nutritional states: Feeding (still ingesting food), Sated (1 to 4 days since last meal) and Deprived (14 to 25 days since last meal). The individuals were paired, each pair placed in a terrarium and observed for 30min. Behaviors displayed were timed in seconds. Our results show that only Feeding individuals displayed agonism towards others, and no relation was observed between motor activity and feeding conditions

Caracterização magnetométrica do Sill de Limeira-SP

The purpose of this study is to characterize the geological subsurface structure of the diabase sill of the Paraná Magmatic Province intruded in the Itararé Group, located near the city of Limeira, in the east-central region of São Paulo state. The magnetometric method served as an important tool defining the igneous body in view of the great contrast between the physical properties of the diabase sill and the host sandstones. Previous cartographic data signaled in region a possible lateral continuity in subsurface, of the various sills that occur in the region. However, the magnetic data obtained herein indicate that the area of occurrence of this body is very restricted and independent of the others observed in the region. The analysis of the radial average power spectrum obtained allowed determine the interval of number of waves adequate for the separation of shallow and deep sources, and thus conclude that the sill of the Limeira region is located more than 100 m deep.
