Pseudomonas aeruginosa LBI produced surface active rhamnolipids when cultivated on waste from the sunflower-oil process under different conditions. These biosurfactants, which reduce the superficial and interfacial tensions between fluids, offer advantages over their chemical counterparts, especially because of their ecological acceptability. These molecules can be used in fields as diverse as chemical, pharmaceutical and petrochemical industries. In this work, we present the effect of C/N ratio on growth and production yield. The best production yields (Y-P/S) were achieved for C/N ratios (in g/g) of 8/1 (0.22) and 6.4/1 (0.23). The product concentration was very satisfactory (7.3 g/L) at C/N ratio of 8/1, especially when considering that the substrate was basically composed of wastes that would otherwise constitute an environmental disposal problem. This study examined a new conservation tillage tool, the rotary paraplow. Emphasis was placed on evaluating the tool's conservation potential using dimensionless graph analysis. The dynamic conditions of the soil were investigated in terms of physical soil properties. Having determined the variables to be measured, dimensional analysis was used to plan the experiments. Two variations were considered for each dependent variable (linear speed, working depth, and rotation velocity), totaling eight treatments, allotting in each an experimental strip with five data collection points. This arrangement totaled 16 experimental strips, with 80 data collection points for all variables. The rotary paraplow generates a trapezoidal furrow for planting with a very wide bottom and narrower at the top. The volumetric subsoiling action generates cracks on the sides of the band. Because of their specific geometry the blades of rotary paraplow generate a soil failure according to its natural crack angle, optimizing the energy use, while preserving the natural soil properties. Results showed the conservation character of the rotary paraplow, capable of breaking up clods for planting without changing the original physical soil properties.

Dendritic nucleic acids are highly branched and ordered molecular structures, possessing numerous single-stranded oligonucleotide arms, which hold great promise for enhancing the sensitivity of DNA biosensors. This article evaluates the interfacial behavior and redox activity of nucleic acid dendrimers at carbon paste electrodes, in comparison to DNA. Factors influencing the adsorption behavior, including the adsorption potential and time, solution conditions, or dendrimer concentration, are explored. The strong adsorption at the anodically pretreated carbon surface is exploited for an effective preconcentration step prior to the chronopotentiometric measurement of the surface species. Coupled with the numerous guanine oxidation sites, such stripping protocol offers remarkably low detection limits (e.g., 3 pM or 2.4 femtomole of the I-layer dendrimer following a 15 min accumulation). The new observations bear important implications upon future biosensing applications of nucleic dendrimers.

The world tendency is the increase of the productivity and the production of pieces more and more sophisticated, with high degree of geometric and dimensional tolerances, with good surface finish and low cost. Rectification is responsible for the final finish in the machining process of a material. However, damages generated in this production phase affect all the resources used in the previous processes. Great part of the problems happennig in the rectification process is due to the enormous temperature generated in this activity because of the machining conditions. The dive speed, which is directly related to the productivity, is considered responsible for the damages that occur during rectification, limiting its values to those that do not cause such damages. In this work, through the variation of the dive speed in the process of cylindrical grinding of type ABNT D6 steel, rationalizing the application of two cutting fluids and using a CBN (cubic boron nitrate) abrasive wheel with vitrified blond, the influence of the dive speed on the surface damages of hardened steels was evaluated. The results allowed to say that the dive speed, associated to an efficient cooling and lubrication, didn't provoke thermal damages (including heated zones, cracks and tension stresses) to the material. Residual stresses and the roughness of rectified materials presented a correlation with the machining conditions. The work concluded that it is possible to increase the productivity without provoking damages in the rectified components.

Prosthetic composite is a widely used biomaterial that satisfies the criteria for application as an organic implant without adverse reactions. Polyethylene therephthalate (PET) fiber-reinforced composites have been used because of the excellent cell adhesion, biodegradability and biocompatibility. The chemical inertness and low surface energy of PET in general are associated with inadequate bonds for polymer reinforcements. It is recognized that the high strength of composites, which results from the interaction between the constituents, is directly related to the interfacial condition or to the interphase. A radio frequency plasma reactor using oxygen was used to treat PET fibers for 5, 20, 30 and 100 s. The treatment conditions were 13.56 MHz, 50 W, 40 Pa and 3.33 x 10(-7) m(3)/s. A Rame-Hart goniometer was used to measure the contact angle and surface energy variation of fibers treated for different times. The experimental results showed contact angle values from 47degrees to 13degrees and surface energies from 6.4 x 10(-6) to 8.3 x 10(-6) J for the range of 5 to 100 s, respectively. These results were confirmed by the average ultimate tensile strength of the PET fiber/polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) matrix composite tested in tensile mode and by scanning electron microscopy.

The aim of this work was to investigate the effect of previous treatments at high pressures on the crystallization kinetics of monolithic samples of a Li2O-2SiO(2) (LS2) glass. The glass transition temperature (T-g) and the temperature of the onset of crystallization (T-p) obtained by differential thermal analyses (DTA) were measured for LS2 glass samples submitted to isostatic pressures ranging from 2.5 to 7.7 GPa during 5 min at room temperature. The observed systematic changes in T-g and T-p were probably related to the cracks induced by high pressure inside the monolithic samples and in its surface. Away from the cracks, the nucleation density slightly decreased as a function of pressure but along the cracks, the nucleation density was significantly higher. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V.
