Pathol. Lab. Med., 114:926-928) demonstrated that heterologous antigen from the laboratory-adapted murine Taenia crassiceps metacestode may substitute those from Taenia solium in the immunodiagnosis of human cysticercosis by the indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (IE). ?This antigen is easily obtained at a laboratory level and solves the problem of T. solium cysticerci collection from naturally or experimentally infected swine. In this study an IE employing a heterologous antigen from the T. crassiceps metacestode was evaluated for the immunodiagnosis of swine cysticercosis. Sera from 300 swine free of T. solium cysticerci by post-mortem examination were employed to determine two IE cut- off values: 1) Mean ELISA values + 2 standard deviations (2 sigma cut-off) and 2) - Mean ELISA values + 3 standard deviations (3 sigma cut-off). The specificity of IE was 97% with the 2 sigma cut-off and 100% with the 3 sigma cut-off. When applied to ten sera from swine infected by cysticerci of T. solium by post-mortem examination, the sensitivity of IE was 100% independent of the cut off.

Bone exostosis has long been described in the literature, appearing in most cases as a torus palatinus or mandibularis. These two variations are relatively common and affect approximately 30% of the world's population. Incidence is even higher when human skulls are examined post mortem, indicating that in some cases the exostosis is small and cannot be seen under the soft tissue. Removal of an exostosis is usually associated with the construction of a prothesis, but in rare cases such as the present, the lesion enlarges enough to affect speech and feeding. Few studies have reported the removal of such a large exostosis, and all were conducted in a hospital environment. In this case, complete removal was successfully conducted in an ambulatory clinic under local anesthesia.

Shells of Bouchardia rosea (Brachiopoda, Rhynchonelliformea) are abundant in Late Holocene death assemblages of the Ubatuba Bight, Brazil, SW Atlantic. This genus is also known from multiple localities in the Cenozoic fossil record of South America. A total of 1211 valves of B. rosea, 2086 shells of sympatric bivalve mollusks (14 nearshore localities ranging in depth from 0 to 30 m), 80 shells of Bouchardia zitteli, San Julián Formation, Paleogene, Argentina, and 135 shells of Bouchardia transplatina, Camacho Formation, Neogene, Uruguay were examined for bioerosion traces. All examined bouchardiid shells represent shallow-water, subtropical marine settings. Out of 1211 brachiopod shells of B. rosea, 1201 represent dead individuals. A total of 149 dead specimens displayed polychaete traces (Caulostrepsis). Live polychaetes were found inside Caulostrepsis borings in 10 life-collected brachiopods, indicating a syn-vivo interaction (Caulostrepsis traces in dead shells of B. rosea were always empty). The long and coiled peristomial palps, large chaetae on both sides of the 5th segment, and flanged pygidium found in the polychaetes are characteristic of the polychaete genus Polydora (Spionidae). The fact that 100% of the Caulostrepsis found in living brachiopods were still inhabited by the trace-making spionids, whereas none was found in dead hosts, implies active biotic interaction between the two living organisms rather than colonization of dead brachiopod shells. The absence of blisters, the lack of valve/site stereotypy, and the fact that tubes open only externally are all suggestive of a commensal relationship. These data document a new host group (bouchardiid rhynchonelliform brachiopods) with which spionids can interact (interestingly, spionid-infested sympatric bivalves have not been found in the study area despite extensive sampling). The syn-vivo interaction indicates that substantial bioerosion may occur when the host is alive. Thus, the presence of such bioerosion traces on fossil shells need not imply a prolonged post-mortem exposure of shells on the sea floor. Also, none of the Paleogene and Neogene Bouchardia species included any ichnological evidence for spionid infestation. This indicates that the Spionidae/ Bouchardia association may be geologically young, although the lack of older records may also reflect limited sampling and/or taphonomic biases.

This study shows the helminthic fauna of 16 rock cavies (Kerodon rupestris) from the semi-arid region in the State of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil. Nine animals were captured from the wild and seven from a captive population located at the Centro de Multiplicação de Animais Silvestres, city of Mossoró, were examined in this study. The animals were slaughtered, and post mortem analysis of the digestive tract, trachea, heart, lungs, liver, pancreas, and kidneys were done in search for the presence of parasites. Five species of nematode (Paraspidodera uncinata, Trichostrongylus colubriformis, Trichuris gracilis, Trichuris muris, and Vianella lenti) and one species of cestode (Thysanotaenia congolensis) were identified.

During the critical period of the maternal recognition, which occurs between days 15 and 19 of pregnancy, the conceptus must competently synthesize molecules capable of blocking the synthesis of prostaglandin F2α (PGF2α) and luteolysis. In cattle, the major macromolecule involved in suck blockage is the protein interferontau (IFN-τ). During the critical period, failures in the recognition of pregnancy determine embryonic mortality on up to 40% of inseminated cows. Data about IFN-τ in Bos taurus indicus are still scarce. Objective of this study was to quantitatively evaluate the presence of IFN-τ during the critical period for maternal recognition of pregnancy in uterine flushings obtained in vivo by Foley catheter (Days 14, 16 and 18 post estrus) or post-mortem (Day 18 post estrus). Multiparous, cyclic or pregnant zebu cows (Bos taurus indicus) on days 14, 16 and 18 post estrus were used for in vivo or post mortem uterine flushing collection. In both cases, a Ringer solution was used to wash the uterus of cows. Uterine flushings were concentrated by ultrafiltration and lyophilized. Proteins were separated by one-dimensional electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) in a 15% polyacrilamide gel. Interferontau quantification in uterine flushings was performed by western blotting and densitometry. Non-specific protein bands were observed in both in vivo and post mortem uterine flushings. Interferon-tau was detected only in uterine flushings obtained from pregnant cows post-mortem (P<0.05). Optical density of protein bands was not affected by the day of the critical period, state (cyclic or pregnant) or interaction day x state. There was no effect of the conceptus weight or progesterone concentration on the day of uterine flushing collection in the optical density of the IFN-τ protein band. It was concluded that the detection and quantification of IFN-τ in the uterine environment of zebu cows, in these experimental?conditions, is only possible in uterine flushings obtained post-mortem.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of deboning time on broiler breeder hen meat for in natura consumption. Eighty samples of breast fillets with bone (Pectoralis major muscle) were collected and divided into four groups of 20 samples each; each group represented a different post-mortem deboning time: 0 (immediately after cooling), 4, 8 and 12h post-mortem. At 24h post-mortem, all samples were evaluated for the following parameters: pH, color (L*, a* and b*), cooking loss, water retention capacity, shear force, myofibrillar fragmentation index and fiber diameter. Color (L*, a* and b*), cooking loss, water retention capacity and shear force were significantly different (p ≥ 0.05) among the evaluated deboning times. The shear force value of breast fillets deboned at 0h post-mortem (8.478) was significantly different (p ≥ 0.05) from those deboned at 4, 8 and 12h post-mortem (5.154; 5.375 and 4.819, respectively). Therefore, an increase in the tenderness of breast fillets was observed, when deboning was performed at least 4h post-mortem.

Necropsy is a post-mortem criterious exam that helps in clinical diagnosis and consists in external and internal analysis of body cavities and organs of a corpse in order to determine the cause of death or to verify the extension and the nature of lesions caused by diseases. Considering the bonds between owners and their pets many veterinarians seems to visualize necropsy as a difficult task. This fact has gained great importance in avian Veterinary Medicine since bird owners have both love and economic bonds. Necropsy in often neglected in Veterinary Medicine although being a very important practice for the professional learning and also for reaching a reliable diagnosis of certain diseases. For this reason, this article aims to describe the procedure for performing avian cosmetic necropsy, which keeps the external characteristics of animals and increases the acceptance of owners by not disfiguring the corpse.
