We briefly discuss four different possible types of transitions from quark to hadronic matter and their characteristic signatures in terms of correlations. We also highlight the effects arising from mass modification of hadrons in hot and dense hadronic matter, as well as their quantum statistical consequences: the appearance of squeezed quantum states and the associated experimental signatures, i.e., the back-to-back correlations of particle-antiparticle pairs. We briefly review the theoretical results of these squeezed quanta, generated by in-medium modified masses, starting from the first indication of the existence of surprising particle-antiparticle correlations, and ending by considering the effects of chiral dynamics on these correlation patterns. Nevertheless, a prerequisite for such a signature is the experimental verification of its observability. Therefore, the experimental observation of back-to-back correlations in high energy heavy ion reactions would be a unique signature, proving the existence of in-medium mass modification of hadronic states. on the other hand, their disappearance at some threshold centrality or collision energy would indicate that the hadron formation mechanism would have qualitatively changed: asymptotic hadrons above such a threshold are not formed from medium modified hadrons anymore, but rather by new degrees of freedom characterizing the medium. Furthermore, the disappearance of the squeezed BBC could also serve as a signature of a sudden, non-equilibrium hadronization scenario from a supercooled quark-gluon plasma phase.

We recently proposed a QCD Pomeron described by the exchange of two nonperturbative gluons characterized by a dynamically generated gluon mass. It is shown here that data on elastic scattering, exclusive rho production in deep inelastic scattering, and the J/psi-nucleon total cross section can be successfully described in terms of a single gluon mass m(g) congruent-to 0.37 GeV. We observe that the total cross sections of hadrons with small radii, such as J/psi, have a marked dependence on the effective gluon mass.

Mass relations for hadrons containing a single heavy quark (charm or beauty) are studied from the viewpoint of a quark model with broken SU(8) symmetry, developed by Hendry and Lichtenberg some time ago, in comparison to that of the heavy quark effective theory. The interplay of the two approaches is explored and spectroscopic consequences derived.

We examine a Lipkin based two-level pairing model at finite temperature and in the thermodynamic limit. Whereas at T = 0 the model exhibits a superconducting ground state for sufficiently high values of the coupling constant, a partially superconducting phase in which some of the particles are paired, is found to survive at high temperatures in a special treatment. This phase is a mixture of abnormally-occupied eigenstates, which lie at higher energy, of the interactionless model Hamiltonian.

Starting from the Fock space representation of hadron bound states in a quark model, a change of representation is implemented by a unitary transformation such that the composite hadrons are redescribed by elementary-particle field operators. Application of the unitary transformation to the microscopic quark Hamiltonian gives rise to effective hadron-hadron, hadron-quark, and quark-quark Hamiltonians. An effective baryon Hamiltonian is derived using a simple quark model. The baryon Hamiltonian is free of the post-prior discrepancy which usually plagues composite-particle effective interactions.

We review two-dimensional QCD. We start with the field theory aspects since 't Hooft's 1/N expansion, arriving at the non-Abelian bosonization formula, coset construction and gauge-fixing procedure. Then we consider the string interpretation, phase structure and the collective coordinate approach. Adjoint matter is coupled to the theory, and the Landau-Ginzburg generalization is analysed. We end with considerations concerning higher algebras, integrability, constraint structure, and the relation of high-energy scattering of hadrons with two-dimensional (integrable) field theories.

We derive bounds on Higgs and gauge-boson anomalous interactions using the LEP2 data on the production of three photons and photon pairs in association with hadrons. In the framework of SU(2)L ⊗ U(1)Y effective Lagrangians, we examine all dimension-six operators that lead to anomalous Higgs interactions involving γ and Z. The search for Higgs boson decaying to γγ pairs allow us to obtain constrains on these anomalous couplings that are comparable with the ones originating from the analysis of pp̄ collisions at the Tevatron. Our results also show that if the coefficients of all blind operators are assumed to have the same magnitude, the indirect constraints on the anomalous couplings obtained from this analysis, for Higgs masses MH ≲ 140 GeV, are more restrictive than the ones coming from the W+W- production. © 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. We estimate the cross sections for the production of resonances, pion pairs, and a central cluster of hadrons in peripheral heavy-ion collisions through two-photon and double-pomeron exchange, at energies that will be available at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The effect of the impact parameter in the diffractive reactions is introduced, and by imposing the condition for realistic peripheral collisions we verify that in the case of very heavy ions the pomeron-pomeron contribution is indeed smaller than the electromagnetic one. However, they give a non-negligible background in the collision of light ions. This diffractive background will be more important at RHIC than at LHC.

Nonperturbative functions that parametrize off-diagonal hadronic matrix elements of the light-cone leading-twist quark operators are considered. These functions are calculated within the proposed relativistic quark model allowing for the nontrivial structure of the QCD vacuum, special attention being given to gauge invariance. Hadrons are treated as bound states of quarks; strong-interaction quark-pion vertices are described by effective interaction Lagrangians generated by instantons. The parameters of the instanton vacuum, such as the effective radius of the instanton and the quark mass, are related to the vacuum expectation values of the quark-gluon operators of the lowest dimension and to low-energy pion observables. © 2000 MAIK Nauka/Interperiodica.

The first experimental evidence for one of the six predicted baryon states which contain two valence charmed quarks-the doubly charmed baryons. As such, there were many predictions of the masses and other properties of these states. The properties of doubly charmed baryons provide a new window into the structure of baryonic matter.
