Fractal geometry would appear to offer promise for new insight on water transport in unsaturated soils, This study was conducted to evaluate possible fractal influence on soil water diffusivity, and/or the relationships from which it arises, for several different soils, Fractal manifestations, consisting of a time-dependent diffusion coefficient and anomalous diffusion arising out of fractional Brownian motion, along with the notion of space-filling curves were gleaned from the literature, It was found necessary to replace the classical Boltzmann variable and its time t(1/2) factor with the basic fractal power function and its t(n) factor, For distinctly unsaturated soil water content theta, exponent n was found to be less than 1/2, but it approached 1/2 as theta approached its sated value, This function n = n(theta), in giving rise to a time-dependent, anomalous soil water diffusivity D, was identified with the Hurst exponent H of fractal geometry, Also, n approaching 1/2 at high water content is a behavior that makes it possible to associate factal space filling with soil that approaches water saturation, Finally, based on the fractally interpreted n = n(theta), the coalescence of both D and 8 data is greatly improved when compared with the coalescence provided by the classical Boltzmann variable.

Wet silica gels with similar to 1.4 x 10(-3) mol SiO2/cm(3) and similar to 90 vol.% liquid phase were prepared from the sonohydrolysis of tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) with different additions of dimethylformamide (DMF). Aerogels were obtained by CO2 supercritical extraction. The samples were studied mainly by small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and nitrogen adsorption. Wet gels exhibit a mass fractal structure with fractal dimension D increasing from 2.23 to 2.35 and characteristic length xi decreasing from similar to 9.4 nm to similar to 5.1 nm, as the DMF/TEOS molar ratio is increased from 0 to 4. The supercritical process apparently eliminates some porosity, shortening the fractality domain in the mesopore region and developing an apparent surface/mass fractal (with correlated mass fractal dimension D-m similar to 2.6 and surface fractal dimension D-s similar to 2.3) in the micropore region. The fundamental role of the DMF addition on the structure of the aerogels is to diminish the porosity and the pore mean size, without, however, modify substantially the specific surface area and the average size of the silica particle of the solid network. Observed deviations from traditional concepts of soil-water movement are considered in terms of fractals. A connection is made between this movement and a Brownian motion, a random and self-affine type of fractal, to account for the soil-water diffusivity function having auxiliary time dependence for unsaturated soils. The position of a given water content is directly proportional to t(n), where t is time, and exponent n for distinctly unsaturated soil is less than the traditional 0.50. As water saturation is approached, n approaches 0.50. Macroscopic fractional Brownian motion is associated with n < 0.50, but shifts to regular Brownian motion for n = 0.50.

Fractal dimensions of grain boundary region in doped SnO2 ceramics were determined based on previously derived fractal model. This model considers fractal dimension as a measure of homogeneity of distribution of charge carriers. Application of the derived fractal model enables calculation of fractal dimension using results of impedance spectroscopy. The model was verified by experimentally determined temperature dependence of the fractal dimension of SnO2 ceramics. Obtained results confirm that the non-Debye response of the grain boundary region is connected with distribution of defects and consequently with a homogeneity of a distribution of the charge carriers. Also, it was found that C-T-1 function has maximum at temperature at which the change in dominant type of defects takes place. This effect could be considered as a third-order transition.

This paper presents the principal results of a detailed study about the use of the Meaningful Fractal Fuzzy Dimension measure in the problem in determining adequately the topological dimension of output space of a Self-Organizing Map. This fractal measure is conceived by combining the Fractals Theory and Fuzzy Approximate Reasoning. In this work this measure was applied on the dataset in order to obtain a priori knowledge, which is used to support the decision making about the SOM output space design. Several maps were designed with this approach and their evaluations are discussed here.

The structural evolution during sintering of compacted SnO2 sol-gel powder was investigated using nitrogen adsorption isotherm analysis. Results show that for sintering temperatures up to 400°C the samples have a fractal pore size distribution. As the sintering temperature increases, a structural rearragement occurs, allowing an increase of the efficiency of particle packing and the reduction of fractality. Above 400°C, the pore size growth associated with grain coalescence is the main structural change observed as the sintering temperature increases. © 1995.

Fractal geometry is relevant to understand and explain many natural complex geometries. Using the fractal set concept (fig. 1) many authors have shown that shorelines, landscapes and fractures follow a fractal behaviour. These authors have developed many methods, including the Cantor's Dust Method (CDM) (VELDE et al., 1992), a linear method of analysis adapted for the determination of two-dimensional phenomena. The Itu Granitic Complex (IGC) is a wide granitic body that that crops out at northwest of Cabreuva City, Sao Paulo State (fig. 2) and was affected in its south border by dextral Itu-Jundiuvira Shear Zone (IJSZ) that produced fractures and alignment of feldspars crystals. The different types of fractures (compression, distension and shear) was discriminated from the relationship between them and medium stress ellipsoid of IJSZ (fig. 3). A modified version of CDM was used to study a possible fractal behaviour of the fracture traces in the south border of IGC. The main modification was the use only one direction of analysis (NE/SW). Four parallel profiles were traced with lengths between 9.75km and 12.75km, each one them was divided into six classes of segments (x) with 375m, 500m, 750m, 1.000m, 1.250m and 1.500m. The parameter (N) is provided by he rate between profile length and choiced segment. For each x the number of intervals is counted with at least one event (fracture intersection) which supplied the parameter(n). The n/N rate provide the parameter (p) that represents the relationship between frequency of events and x. And finally the parameters p and x were plotted in a logarithmic graphics (fig. 4) that provide a line with such a declivity (1) which is related to effective dimension (De). In theory, granitics bodies are isotropics and they would have a same fractal dimension in all segments, but the logarithmic graphics (fig. 4) show that fracture traces of IGC has a fractal behaviour in a restrict interval. This fact probably occurs from the passage of a ductil-brittle deformation condition to a more brittle deformation condition of IGC.

The estimation of the number of people in an area under surveillance is very important for the problem of crowd monitoring. When an area reaches an occupation level greater than the projected one, people's safety can be in danger. This paper describes a new technique for crowd density estimation based on Minkowski fractal dimension. Fractal dimension has been widely used to characterize data texture in a large number of physical and biological sciences. The results of our experiments show that fractal dimension can also be used to characterize levels of people congestion in images of crowds. The proposed technique is compared with a statistical and a spectral technique, in a test study of nearly 300 images of a specific area of the Liverpool Street Railway Station, London, UK. Results obtained in this test study are presented.

A novel fractal model for grain boundary regions of ceramic materials was developed. The model considers laterally inhomogeneous distribution of charge carriers in the vicinity of grain boundaries as the main cause of the non-Debye behaviour and distribution of relaxation times in ceramic materials. Considering the equivalent circuit the impedance of the grain boundary region was expressed. It was shown that the impedance of the grain boundary region has the form of the Davidson-Cole equation. The fractal dimension of the inhomogeneous distribution of charge carriers in the region close to the grain boundaries could be calculated based on the relation ds = 1 + β, where β is the constant from the Davidson-Cole equation.

This paper presents the study of computational methods applied to histological texture analysis in order to identify plant species, a very difficult task due to the great similarity among some species and presence of irregularities in a given species. Experiments were performed considering 300 ×300 texture windows extracted from adaxial surface epidermis from eight species. Different texture methods were evaluated using Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA). Results showed that methods based on complexity analysis perform a better texture discrimination, so conducting to a more accurate identification of plant species. © 2009 Springer Berlin Heidelberg.

In a general way, in an electric power utility the current transformers (CT) are used to measurement and protection of transmission lines (TL) 1 The Power Line Carriers systems (PLC) are used for communication between electrical substations and transmission line protection. However, with the increasing use of optical fiber to communication (due mainly to its high data transmission rate and low signal-noise relation) this application loses potentiality. Therefore, other functions must be defined to equipments that are still in using, one of them is detecting faults (short-circuits) and transmission lines insulator strings damages 2. The purpose of this paper is to verify the possibility of using the path to the ground offered by the CTs instead of capacitive couplings / capacitive potential transformers to detect damaged insulators, since the current transformers are always present in all transmission lines (TL's) bays. To this a comparison between this new proposal and the PLC previous proposed system 2 is shown, evaluating the economical and technical points of view. ©2010 IEEE.

We study the boundary of the 3-dimensional Rauzy fractal ε ⊂ ℝ×ℂ generated by the polynomial P(x) Dx 4-x 3-x 2-x-1. The finite automaton characterizing the boundary of ε is given explicitly. As a consequence we prove that the set ε has 18 neighboors where 6 of them intersect the central tile ε in a point. Our construction shows that the boundary is generated by an iterated function system starting with 2 compact sets.
